Got an orange? Are you bored with a lot of time on your hands? Make these super easy and delicious candied orange slices! Great for a last-minute holiday treat.
For more Hungry AF recipes: taste.md/1JmN1ge
INGREDIENTS
1 navel oranges
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar
4 oz dark chocolate
RECIPE
Thoroughly wash the orange to get rid of any waxy residue. Slice off and discard the ends, and slice the rest of the fruit into ¼” slices.
In a wide pot, heat and stir water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Avoid stirring after this point to prevent crystallization. Bring to a gentle boil and add the orange slices.
After 15 minutes, lower the heat to medium-low. Flip over the slices and continue cooking on low for another 15-20 minutes, until the peel becomes translucent and the syrup has thickened.
Place a wire rack on top of a lined baking sheet, and transfer the candied slices on top to cool. Reserve orange syrup for other uses.
Melt chocolate and dip slices halfway. Place slices on a parchment-lined tray and chill.

I made these tonight and wow, they were amazing! I cooked for slightly longer than 30 min because they didn't look as translucent after just 30 min. The result was so succulent and sweet. You definitely can't taste the bitterness from the pith.

I make these every year. If you have an electric stove, the heat needs to be medium. You're trying to avoid a rolling boil/crystalization, it can gum up your pan. It takes 40-50 minutes to turn translucent. I dry them by pressing between paper towels with my cutting boards over them to press and draw the moisture out, and I speed up the drying process in the oven on low (150-200F)

I needed to turn up the heat to somewhere between high and medium heat until the oranges would actually start to take in the sugar. The heat needed to be so high that the oranges were covered in bobbles and you couldn’t see them anymore. Then, they started to look see through☺️ It took some time before I realised this, so they definitely got more than 30 minutes😊👌🏻

@erkdoc5
@erkdoc5 7 лет назад
When making candied citrus peels you boil the peels then drain the water to remove the bitterness. You could try boiling the oranges for a couple minutes before starting. I would assume you would need to add a couple holes in the peel to keep them from exploding.
