In this diy project i am going to make an electric room heater very easy to make which runs on 12 volt direct current and consumes 25 amperes. Total this homemade electric room heater consumes 300 watts power and deliver suitable amount of heat to warm a room. In this diy room heater project 14 gauge nichrome wire is used as a heating element.

Let the AMPS be with you. Did I see 25 Amps at 12V DC? Your power supply adaptor will contribute to your heating as well. Brilliant!

I used this video, but instead of using an expensive power supply to provide the 12v DC. I simply used a transformer out of an old non working computer power supply, the transformer I use is rated up to around 500w, therefore I just draw around 300w from it and it does the job fine. Obviously the transformer changes high voltage to low, it doesn't turn the power into DC power, but you don't actually need the power to be DC power, using 12v AC is perfectly fine. Therefore the cheapest way to do this is to use a mere transformer, of course I cover my transformer in a kind of half pipe that goes over it, so the 240v side cannot be touched accidentally, so it's safe. Your idea of using the concrete was very good, but I didn't use it as I was worried about it cracking and the element falling out onto the cage area. Therefore I have instead an area cut out at the bottom of the cage, and where two metal rods come upwards and they don't touch the cage, between these metal rods is my element, the rods acts as the positive and negative, the rods are merely mounted on a piece of wood. The cage itself is mounted in a suspended way above the wood, supported by two separate metal rods at the outside that are not electrically connected to anything. And at the back of the cage I placed in an aluminium tray to help reflect the heat forward. I was prior thinking of making a heater using 100w resistors, however you inspired me to make this one from nichrome wire, in seeing how easy it is from your video, I wasn't quite aware of how useful nichrome was until I saw this.

Great to see construction projects. Not enough guys are capable today or even interested. The fan cannot work as it has no free flow of air. You need to drill some holes at the opposite end. Take care mate. Microwave transformers are incredibly dangerous. 2200v at very high current. Those gloves used with the saw bench were very dangerous.
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 3 года назад
He's not using a microwave transformer, he's using a power supply for a rack mount (server) computer. It will take line voltage (110V or 220V, depending on country), rectify it, and step it down to 12VDC (and maybe a couple of other low voltages on the other pins). I would not trust the gloves he was using with even 110V, considering how many holes he had in them. Maybe he had them on for some other reason? Maybe to hide some sort of identifying mark / scars on his hands? I've seen RU-vid commenters complain about the video creator having dirty fingernails or cuts on their hands, so maybe he just wanted to hide them for some reason...

I made mine a little different, the cage around the limestone is closed with a mylar sheet and then there are a few holes in the sheet for heat to come through and then I have a huge 5v fan behind the mylar sheet that only gets 3v 200ma and it gently pushes the heat to my feet. Yes I made a foot heater and I also have a 30amp fuse for in case

You could have matched the current x resistance = voltage to around 10v ~ 20V (through resistor) where current enough for a small 240V AC fan and put it in series for main current use. For safety, use three pin with Earth (green) connected to the mesh, and put fan to live side and heater at neutral side of series. Hair driers work that way

Just a thin piece of steel wire would probably work better. Copper has a really low resistance. You want high resistance for heat. Stainless is a great option. Also use some foil or something reflective so your not losing the infrared heat

What would happen if you totally encapsulated the cement and placed in a bigger block for heat storage??? Iquess the question is if I had a 400 watt solar collector and heated up 30 pound block of cement with a hole in it to blow air through I wonder how hot the block would get ins say 8 hours...
@johnf5122
@johnf5122 Год назад
I expect it would be quite slow to heat, and since heat is attracted to cold, heat is lost/used as it does. Think of a huge block being a heatsink. You might have a large warm block vs. a smaller hot one.

You’ll spend more heating your house on 12 vdc, because of the efficiency losses. This is really made to use for a 12-48 vdc system. Cut nichrome wire appropriately. If you want to heat with electric more efficiently, try a small mini split heat pump system.

Shrink your room. Doesnt matter if its only a blanket covering a hallway pass. Shrink the cubic feet of air that needs heated. Also, plastic on the inside of a window, they leak and doors are almost never shimmed properly so the corners can be lettin a breeze in. Have the heat hitting you, its cheaper to sink the heat in your body with a slow release, than it is to heat all of the air. It aint gonna hurt to let some of your house get cold (assuming your not using that partition) if anything itll kill off insects tryin to get warm, or halt/suspend growth and breeding

you didn't say where you're from but around $0.20 per hour to run. $1.60 for 8 hours a day, and $48 per month. running costs depend on your electric heater's power, running time, heat settings, and your electricity price. average residential electricity rate in California is 28 ¢/kWh, which is 40% higher than the national average rate of 20 ¢/kWh. Alabama 12.41¢ / kWh in 2021

Okay, forgive me for being an idiot on this... Q1: so the wire heats up the concrete, and the concrete radiates the Heat, white ceramic bricks in an old gas/ propane heater.. am I getting this correctly?? Q2: can we not just hook this to the positive and negative on a 12-volt system?
@johnf5122
@johnf5122 Год назад
Q1 Mostly yes, it heats the ceramic which retains some of that heat for some time. Q2 The nichrome wire being high resistance means that it is a poor conductor of electricity, so although it appears as a short circuit, it isn't one. The resistance of the heater wire bolts to each other is not zero ohms. (meaning when disconnected from the power supply) If you wire the positive and negative together, even wire a tiny piece of this same wire, you will have created a short and the wire won't heat, it will burn up.
