ellen i love your videos. most people go so fast and dont show the camera long enough or close enough. you are a great teacher. your children were fortunate to have a great teacher.
Even plain, they look so nice, warm and inviting. I'm planning a goat milk soap when life eventually returns to normal and the street ministry starts again.
Grear tutorial Ellen, and you are so right about this soap overheating. This was the very first soap I ever attempted and with no experience at all I added more honey, because more is better, right. It exploded lol, it took me 2 days to get my kitchen clean again, ceiling and all... :-) I wish I would have had a tutorial like this, but that was like 10 years ago. Love your channel :-)
@@bowmanfamily9861 No, no, it literally exploded, the raw soap batter was on, and in my cupboards, all over the counter, the floor and also the ceiling. It just got too hot and boom. What a mess that was but I must admit also great fun, I laughed a lot about this.
@@RebekkaHay oh wow! Thats good to know. I just started doing this. And so far I've been lucky I guess. LOL wow. That would've been awful to clean. But at least it was soap. LOL. I still would have laughed to. Everytime I even looked at it.
Beautiful! Thank you for the wonderful tips and info you give. I’m learning so much from you. I didn’t know about loosening the wire on the cutter. Great idea thanks.
Such a gorgeous soap, I'm a new follower of yous I love how you explain what your doing, you make things so simple to follow, I've yet to make a loaf of soap.😆
I freeze my milk exactly the right weight it's easier than what you done but it's a nice bar & I put it in ice to work in so it doesn't change colour when it heats up!
A hint someone shared with me that works great...I was advised to use a funnel to pour the lye straight down into the liquid so it doesn’t sit all over the ice....works great and I don’t have to worry about flicking grains of lye over yourself or the room ! Thanks for the video, I very much enjoy all of them. I remember your very first and you have come such a long way, really working the camera well and so confident when speaking now...you were fine before but have become really good now ,well done !
Hi Ellen, I love to watch your videos ❤. They inspired me to make my own 🙌, I just bought your guiness beer soap! I was wondering why you use Kaolin Clay and oats in most of your recipies?
Thanks! I really love how the kaolin makes the lather feel, and the oats are so skin soothing... I do leave oats out of some of my soaps because I have a friend with oat allergies😉
Great video! A little trick with the honey is to use about an equal amount of warmed water with the honey. It will disperse it easier into the soap batter
I use frozen goat milk and an ice bath because I don’t like my GM/Lye to get above 75F. I ended up making about 6 1/2 pounds of GMS in a dish pan; then I weighed out enough batter to fill a mold, add some fragrance, our, clean out the bowl and on to the next mold. Made seven different scents including Oatmeal Milk & Honey.
My first try today with this soap recipe. After watching lots of videos and recipes I decided to go with this one. I follow the instructions almost exactly to the T . Thank you so much for the tutorial!
It’s a shame that I cannot upload a photo of the soap. Looks really beautiful. However, I already try a little piece for testing and it dried my skin. I mean, I feel my hand really dried. Is it possible that the batter was not ready when I poured it in the mold or do you thing it’s just a matter of let it cure and try later? What do you think it could happen? I have to say that the only oil I changed was the rice and I added sunflower instead. I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you!
I make goat cheese all year around and I would love to learn how to make goat milk soaps for my family. Your video is so inspiring and the soap in this video was absolutely stunning. For a beginner, where do you suggest finding recipes and soap making books. I cannot wait to watch your other videos. Also what size log cutter and mold are featured in you video. It seems like the perfect size. Thank you
Love your soap making. I'm plain and simple. While I like to look at the soaps that look like cupcakes or ice cream on the top it kind of turns me off. I do like a simple decorative soap...but soap looking food or fruit hmmm...no. I'm trying to learn how to make CP and want to use the tussah in it.🥰💖
Have you used the silk yet? You might have already found out but put the silk in the lye when the lye is or is going to get its hottest when the water is added. Otherwise, youll have a stringy mess that looks like you just pulled a glob of hair out of your bath tub.
@@EllenRuthSoap - i like a mix of both, as long as it's not goofy chitchat (Some soapers get a bit too goofy, you can probably guess who I mean). I also meant to thank you for getting the new stickblender and for muting the blender whilst mixing.
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe & knowledge about soap making.Your soaps are gorgeous!Love it! Would like to ask if you use olive pomace to make soap instead of extra virgin/pure olive oil? No offense, I'm using olive pomace too. But there's some people said that pomace is the lowest grade¬ suitable to make soap. Thanks!
Ellen! Great tutorial, thank you. I can’t wait to try it. Question- do you worry the lye isn’t fully dissolved when mixing it with the iced milk? Can you share how you tell that it’s completely dissolved prior to adding it to your oils? Thank you! Momo
Thanks! You can feel the lye graduals while mixing, so after it's all melted and you're stirring it for a bit, you can feel that it's smooth without any grit...
After you've stirred thoroughly, get your ear close and listen for crackling noises. After those stop, your lye should be fully incorporated. I stir it a bit after that, just to make sure.
@@rquiksilver182 I wouldn't suggest someone placing ear close to lye water. The feel of the granduals being dissolved in water is best way. But you can also strain your lye water into oils as well. 😊
Hi Ellen, enjoyable and relaxing vid as usual.. you are a welcome distraction in times like these...thank you ! I don’t know why but even tho I followed your advice, I couldn’t get my tussah silk to melt, eventually I had to fish it out and trash it, anyhow am not giving up, I will try again..tell me how do you enter your olive oil and rice bran oil blend in soap calc . Is it a 50/50 blend . I see oil blends in the supermarket but there are no % amts in the ingredients I cannot use them..Praying you and your family will stay safe !
Hi, and thank you! I've had a few times when the lye mixer wasn't warm enough to melt the silk. You could try melting the silk in a small portion of the water (like boil it in, then let it cool) before adding lye, if you continue to have issues.?. And my olive/rice bran is a 50/50 blend.
New subbie, absolutely fascinated with your soaps. I've been using goat milk soap for about a year, I'm trying to stay away from soaps loaded with chemicals. I went to your website & your soaps look lovely. How long have you been making soap.
So beautiful this classic soap. Thank you for your great guidance. I do have a question, why is it not necessary to put it in the freezer as I have heard others soap makers encourage this final step? I see in your video that it is not necessary. Thank you in advance for your response.
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you! I tried to use the silk in my goat milk soap and it didn’t melt, what did I do wrong? The temperature of the lye water(milk) was at first in the high 60s, I had to put it in warm water a little bit to warm up to the oils.I put it through a sieve and had lumps of it unmelted. I soaped at 86. Can you help please! Thank you for all your replies!😊 P.s., can you use milk powder strait to oils?
This was a GREAT video. Very informative and pretty much answered every question I had almost. I think I'm not using good fragrance oils and its messing with my trace. And then it to me anyways looks like almost a shampoo bar. You know how they look like they have rice in them sometimes. Or the ones I've seen have anyways. LOL. But thx for ALL the info. Do you try to use the same recipe with all your soaps.
Hello Ellen I follow u and I love your channel as a new soap maker I am taking in your skills like a sponge, for this oatmeal soap I want to make it how much does the mold hold in weight and how many bars do u get
First, you are so pleasant thank you for your tutorials! When you place your stick blender to the side in the water pitcher is that distilled water or regular tap water?
Love watching your tutorials, you are very good at explaining each step. I’ve been lucky enough to get some fresh goat’s milk so I’m super excited to make some goats milk soap. I was watching another soaper and they put there soap in the freezer. What is the best method.
@@EllenRuthSoap , I made a batch of goats milk soap using 100% frozen goats milk which I had frozen the day before and when I looked at it the next day there was a crack partially down the centre. I covered my soap with a foil bubble bag, do you think it got to hot.
Girl, do you have a mask on doing that lye water? 😄. I’m moving back as I watch you stick blending and it splashing - LOL😂. Love your videos.❤️❤️❤️ and Love that creamy look.
I love this tutorial!! Where do you get your oils and butter? Would love a one-stop shop. I have an OM&H fo and I love, love that scent. I'll need to check out the one shown. Thank you for such a luxurious recipe ☺️❤️
I love plain soaps. I actually prefer them over fancy soaps. This soap looks so pretty. I think this soap will be good for my kids with eczema. What would you do if soap starts cracking?
Hey Ellen! Thank you for this very informative video. Two qns; do you normally boil the milk before freezing???? Anddd can you kindly link where you got the mould. Thank you
I love your videos and your soaps! Can you tell me where you got the containers you keep your colloidal oats in? I want to get a few of them myself. Thanks in advance 😊
If you add the lye super slow and surround it with ice/water bath, while I'm adding the lye, it doesn't turn yellow. I keep the temp under 80-F - sometimes give it a rest to cool down again before adding more - and it comes out great.
about the goat milk..do you just use the milk from your goats? I have access to fresh goats milk but wasn't sure if I could use that. Thank you for the teaching lesson!!!
Hello Ellen! I have been curious about if can I replace the milk powder for “Vega Protein “ powder that is a vegan powder for milkshakes style drink? If I added to the oils before the lye, would it work? And also been all this component seeds, veggies and coconut milk, would not spoil or rotten in my soap?? Thank you in advance and thanks for sharing all this videos with us. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
That's a great question, and I'm not sure because I haven't tried that sub yet. I would recommend a small test batch. The sodium hydroxide acts as a preservative in soap, so puree's and different additives don't spoil after saponification...
Can you put the weight?? I am learning and is very hard for me to figure out by percentage. Love soap making and love your videos. I did the one with all the supplies from Walmart. Thankfully from Texas
@@mayelajuarez3825 You would still have to know how much your soap mold holds. What if you plug into soapcalc 32 oz of oil for your mold, it spits out its percentages and oz's for you to copy and your your mold really only holds 25 oz of soap or your mold could hold 40 oz of oil?! Have you calculated how much oil your mold holds?
I'm a very new, amateur soaper. I can see myself trying to make a business out of it. My problem is $. Supplies ate my hurdle. Molds, mixing containers, and materials the top 3 issues.
OMH is my all time favorite soap. Awesome video. I’ve always wanted to try the silk. I see you listed all the supplies except the silk. Where can I purchase it?
Ellen, Thank you for a great tutorial. I have a soap splitter, but at the height at which it's set, I have 3 loaves with one loaf taller than the other 2 and I have to shave off about an inch. What height setting do you use please? Thanks.
Just curious...why do you prefer the olive oil/rice bran blend over plain olive oil. Also- I have been using mulberry silk instead of tussah...your thoughts?
Hi Ellen, thank you so much for this well explained video. :D 😍 May I ask what percentage of liquid you used for this recipe? I'm a beginner and I always have problems with a quick trace before adding essential oils.. :( Is it because of the temperature or the percentage of liquid? I usually had 37-40 degrees Celsius..
Hello, Iove this ready will be making :), Where did you get the stamper? Can you do measurments? I am new to soap making so I am struggling with measurments :)
There's a link for the soap stamp in the description box. I don't share this recipe, but do share several others on my channel. Check out the "Test batch" video, I share 4 recipes in that one.
Hi Ellen. I just watched your video and loved it so much I subscribed to you. However being a beginner soap maker i have not mastered the soap calc yet. can you please tell me the measurements in ounces in the receipe above. and what superfat did you use? Looking forward to your response
Thanks, and welcome! Glad you're here! There are lots of tutorials out there on how to use soap calc, and I would really recommend that before soaping. That way you can customize each recipe to fit what ever size mold you have... I use approx 5% super fat or sometimes a touch more😉
Last I heard, or tried, Soap calc will not convert her recipe to your mold. It probably will tell you the percentage and ounces of each oil but it will not make the recipe fit your mold which could waste alot of oil. To do that you either have to know how much oil your mold will hold and then know how to convert or have a lye calculator that does it for you. Look on Etsy.
