If you've never tried cold process soap made with milk, you're in for a treat. It has a creamy, luxurious texture that's great for those with dry or sensitive skin. You can use any kind of milk you like - cow, goat, almond, coconut, etc.
In this video, Anne-Marie demonstrates two different methods for adding milk to cold process soap. You can add the lye slowly to frozen milk, or you can add milk at trace. Both methods result in gorgeous bars!
Learn more about adding milk to soap here: bberry.studio/AddingMilkToSoap
Milk soap does require some extra prep work. When you add lye to liquid, the temperatures can reach up to 200° F. That can scorch the natural sugars in the milk, which causes discoloration and an unpleasant smell. The soap is fine to use and the smell fades as it cures. But if you want a creamy white color, you need to keep temperatures low.
For this soap, we used the Swirl Quick Mix and scented the bars with Golden Oats Fragrance Oil.

Golden Oats is my FAVORITE BB fragrance! I use it in a lot of different recipes. I have NEVER been successful in completely stopping gel phase ... in the refrigerator OR freezer! I still always get an oval in the middle. I finally just gave in an let it gel .. it discolored SLIGHTLY, but it's really ok. It's also a harder, smoother bar. I learned soap making with Anne Marie, a long, long time ago. I just. never, ever get tired of it. A nice, thick trace at the end is a thrill every time~!

I switched to using powdered goat's milk a while ago. I also use powdered buttermilk. I got tired of melting the frozen milk cubes. I blend the powdered milk(s) into the oils before adding the lye/water mixture. 1 tbspn per lb of oil. My soaps have a creamy, luxurious lather. I do put the soap in the refrigerator for up to 1 1/2 hrs to keep it from overheating.
@Marshirmarshir
@Marshirmarshir 3 года назад
Kim Rawls so when adding the powdered milk do you keep your water for your lye the same that the recipe calls for? So if it calls for 10.50 oz water you leave it at that and just add 1 tbs of powder milk per lb? I would like to use powdered milk but not sure how. Thanks.
@kimrawls5955
@kimrawls5955 3 года назад
@@Marshirmarshir I just add the powdered milk as I would any other additives, like clay or say colloidal oatmeal. I blend all my powdered additives into the oils. No change the water amount. Do you soap with full water?
@Nancy-gl3zo
@Nancy-gl3zo 3 года назад
When using the powder, can the batter scorch if you decide to gel it? What if you are using the heat transfer method?
@Marshirmarshir
@Marshirmarshir 3 года назад
Kim Rawls If my recipe calls for 10.50 oz of water with my lye I usually use 7.50 water and 3 oz of goat milk added to my oils after I add my lye water. I’ve been wanting to use powder instead but wasn’t sure how much.
@kimrawls5955
@kimrawls5955 3 года назад
@@Nancy-gl3zo As a general rule whenever I add any type of milk powder I place the soap in the refrigerator initially as a precaution to it possibly overheating. Sugars in milks, honey etc. can cause overheating. I don't force gel my soaps. I tried that once and the soap overheated and cracked. As for the heat transfer method I would still add the milk powder to the oils before adding the lye/water. The last soap I made had powdered goat's milk. I placed it in the refrigerator after I made it and left it there for up to 2hrs. I then placed the soap in a covered Styrofoam container where it continued to saponify.

I made a cold process soap with a high olive oil content and coconut milk for the liquid portion. It was so mushy at first that I thought the batch was ruined and was about to get rid of it. I hung in there and let it sit for a few weeks and to my surprise, it eventually hardened and turned into a great soap. I ended up freezing my coconut oil water because I was afraid it would scorch, it turned out just fine. It had a fantastic lather too.

Gel phase is a natural part of saponification (not that it's 100% necessary)! The issue with the soap with the circle in the center is that it went through a partial gel phase. A complete gel phase can actually make soap lighter than a soap that doesn't gel.

Every time you make soap with milk or juice or anything that should not be cooked inside your soap mold you should put it in the fridge or freezer tor 24h, after that you should put it in a dry place, if it's not with milk you can cover it with plastic film to avoid contact of fresh lye to the air and having soda ash. Spray it with rubbing alcohol to help avoid soda ash. Notice that even after 24h hours in freezer, after taking it out soon the soap will begin to heat up.

It would work, it will just keep the temperature down which is needed for milk, not as essential when using water. Once you add the lye solution to the oils the lye solution needs to be below 100f otherwise it will trace very quickly and as a newbie it’s better to have more time. The only downside of this is if the temp is too low it will take ages to get to trace or thicken up. But try it and see what how you find it, that’s the great thing about soap making it’s all about experimenting

We do not recomment adding surfactants to cold process soap recipes. Castile soaps have a small and dense lather, so we would not recommend that either. How do you add powdered milk to the recipe? I see some soap makers adding it straight to the oils. Do you just weigh out your ounces in powder and at it that way? Thank you.
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 3 года назад
You can do both! You can mix the powder with a portion of the liquid in the recipe and add during trace, or add straight to the oils.

Bramble Berry how do I know how much powder to use?
@courtneyehalchak
@courtneyehalchak 3 года назад
Marshirmarshir a powdered milk is usually measured at 1 tablespoon per pound of oils. For example, In a 5 pound mold, at a lye strength of 35%, you would add 3 tablespoons of powdered milk.

Madam can I add coco amide propyl betaine or sodium lorel sulfate to increase the foam please suggest

I would not use either in CP soap. The ph of those surfactants don’t mesh well with CP. you could use it in liquid soap.

You can make an amazing synthetic detergent bar using these but it wouldn’t be soap. If you want to create more bubbles coconut oil and other oils increase bubbles in a recipe

Could you dissolve your lye in a small amount of water and then wait for it to completely cool down to add that to your milk? And do you like a 10% water 90% milk combo?

You're welcome to try it! We have a great article with our favorite lye and milk tips here: www.brambleberry.com/how-to/soap/art0073-how-to-add-lye-to-milk.html

Totally confused now. Some videos they wrap the soaped molds in a towel, even put it in the oven, to not get that gel markings. But you put it in the freezer or refrigerator? Anybody has a link that perhaps explains the gel thing?

Good morning I made my soap and forgot to add the goat milk? Should the batch be trashed or can I do something else with it?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 11 месяцев назад
It depends, if you're adding the goats milk at the end and your oils and lye are blended and fully saponfied, it should be totally okay to use. However if the goats milk was being used instead of water and is missing, leaving lye flakes and oils to be blended without a liquid, this would create lye pockets and would be unsafe to use.

How long after you take it out of the freezer should you wait to cut it?
@bramble-berry

Normally 48 hours is plenty long enough for it to thaw and harden before you cut.

How many milk ice cubes do you use with your Lye?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry Год назад
The amount of ice used in your recipe should be equal to the amount of water called for in the recipe. For example if your recipe calls for 10 ounces of distilled water, you should use 10 ounces of ice cubes.

Okay, so, lactic acid is a very common acid that can be found in all kinds of things, (mostly fermented) and cam be extracted as a pure ingredient from bacteria (since lactobacillus bacteria is actually a primary source for it). The reason it's called lactic acid is because it was first discovered in milk, but there is no reason you'd need to use milk specifically for the lactic acid content.
