Today, I am going to be making, “Goya Champuru”.
"Goya" is a word for bitter melon in Japanese. "Champuru" means “Stir-fry” and "Mixed" in Okinawan dialect.
So it should be translated in "Stir-fried bitter melon with other ingredients".
In summer, we eat Goya to enjoy a seasonal taste and for its nutrients at the same time.
<ingredients>
1 Goya (bitter melon or gourd)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 small firm tofu (150g)
2 large eggs
150g sliced pork belly
1 tablespoon mirin ( 2/3 tablespoon sugar)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 tablespoons Bonito flakes

Hey, do you eat leaves? I have never tried it!! Actually, we eat sweet potato vine, similar to the case. That would be nice if you share the information like this! So interesting! Thanks for watching!

i tried making this back in Canada, and just made it for the first time since moving to japan. it really is delicious, I think it might be my favourite Japanese food! the bitter melon is bitter, yes, but not unpleasant when eaten with the other ingredients. the best way to describe it is it tastes just like how a garden smells. fresh, healthy, and earthy. I forgot to buy sesame oil and bonito flakes when I was getting the ingredients at AEON but next time I will surely add them. thank you for helping me discover this wonderful dish (and I didn't feel sick after eating it this time!).

i did no know that bitter melon is a part of Japanese cuisine. my mom prepares it with eggs and fish sauce, but i think adding pork will give it more sustenance. Thank you =)

I have yet to cook with bitter melon, but this dish has all the things that fill you up without being too heavy for a summer dish. I would love to see some more dishes using bitter melon on this channel. Learning a new ingredient and diversifying its utilization will help a person like me (who has never tried this gourd) introduce something new to my family while expanding my personal culinary skills. This is definitely one of the reasons why Japanese cooking is so good; maximizing seasonal vegetation potential. Thank you for the share and a new stir fry option.

Thank you for your considerable comment! I heard that the experiencing new taste stimulates the brain forming synapse. I don't know if it's true or not. But I hope so. Thanks for watching!

I made this and it was absolutely delicious. But i ate the whole thing by myself so i felt kind of sick after 😂 was worth it though. I could only find chinese bittermelon, but i assume it's pretty similar. Thanks for the recipe!

I have a huge asian market located about half an hour away. I think it will be worth a trip to see if I can get bitter melon. This dish looks great. Now that you have done the Bento videos (and I'm not saying you shouldn't do more Bento video's if you have more ideas - I've loved them) maybe you should do a video on dinner side dishes. The extras around your Goya Champuru looked very good. Thanks as always!

Hi, Jasper! I haven't done Bento series yet but for the moment, move on to dinner. As my community survey shows they want more everyday food. Since bitter melon is summer vegetable, you have to hurry to the Asian market. Let me know how you like it if you give it a try! Thanks for watching!

Wonderful! I really like bitter melon and this combination looks delicious. Thanks! I wonder if my daughters will be able to handle the bitterness or they need to be a little older :)

in Malaysia we wall goya @ bitter mellon as peria (per-rear). normally we fired it with egg just like goya champuru minus tofu and becon or just ate it after simmer a lil bit for medicinal benefit. personally i don't like it cause its bitter, but i will try to make this recipe to see how the taste (minus bacon and mirin off cause)

Wow, okay, I think I've never heard about bitter melon! But that looks tasty and I liked the style of the video where you explain so much 🤓 But where is your funny fork that you usually use to mix the egg? 😅🙈

As always it looks easy to make. :) But I think I will have problems finding Goya here in Sweden, but It would be fun if I could. The Asian stores here are mainly filled with products from Thailand and you have to really search in several towns or shop online if you want any special Japanese or Korean ingredients. :(

Bitter melon is popular in many Asian counties. If there are Indian grocery stores, they might have it.

In Sweden...I can imagine how hard it is to find Japanese ingredients. One of my cousin lives in Aarfus, Denmark and she said she can't find anything Japanese. But as Jenn said, maybe you can find Goya at Indian market. Or what about a frozen section? I have seen frozen sliced Goya somewhere. Thanks for watching!
