We have two dogs that stay home alone all day. We live in Missouri where it can be very hot or very cold, so it's great for them to be able to come in and out of the weather. Our dogs are also rescue dogs, so they are a bit nervous with new sites and sounds that are unlike the island where they came from.
We use an electronic dog door that requires a transmitter located on the dog's collar to work. I wasn't happy with the quality of the device's collar that came in the package. So, here is a video about how I solved the problem.

Thank you for suggesting this idea. Just tried it on both of my dog's collars and it work great! I see that you made your video almost 4 years ago, which tells me that High Tech Pet has not changed their manufacturing process in that time. If they made the slot on the back of the MS-5 little bigger and wider to accommodate the thickness of a 1/2-inch wide nylon dog collar (which is what I used), they could get rid of that flimsy, no-good strap that ships with the MS-5 and customers could use their existing dog collars to attach it. I hope High Tech Pet reads this comment. I'll probably send them a letter, because I think it's a shame to be selling such a poor-quality product for so long without listening to customers' suggestions for improving what otherwise is very fine product.

THANK YOU!!! Omfg this was genius! I knew there had to be BETTER way! Now my girl dog can wear cute collars without that cheap masculine looking collar! Furthermore, my new puppy shredded his nice “high tech pet” collar in less than 24 hours! Yes, I partly to blame on it! 😏 Surely they can invest in better quality AND cuter collars for OUR high tech pets! We have made a life long invest with this door, so clearly we love our pets and want them to look cute too!!! Thanks again, this was SUPER helpful!!!

This is great. Thanks for the idea! The only potential issue is that the inside where the zip ties are clipped might rub against the dog’s and be uncomfortable for the dog. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this issue?
@TheMatlacks
@TheMatlacks 6 месяцев назад
I used a metal file to smooth off the zip tie cuts. Other than that, our dogs collars are pretty loose and never seem to be a bother.

Have you ever had problems with the ultrasonic sound with the dogs? I read a few reviews that said the dogs were bothered by it. It is probably the only reason we haven't bought this dog door yet.

Has anyone else had issues with the "water proof" ness of the collar? It's not like my dog is scuba diving, but we're on our third collar (the previous collars have failed after one week each). Luckily the manufacturer has replaced them at no charge.

I know this video is going on 5 years old, but I just wanted to say that it would be better to make your holes in the collar using a soldering gun to melt/seal the holes.
@TheMatlacks
@TheMatlacks 3 года назад
That’s a great idea! Luckily, the holes I make don't damage the collars...they just separate the “threads”. -Mat

This looks like a great solution, but I have just one question. With the third cable tie wrapped around the MS-5 transmitter device, how do you get it off the collar to change the internal battery? Do you cut that tie and then replace it with a new one after each battery change?
@TheMatlacks
@TheMatlacks 4 года назад
Yep, that’s exactly what I do. It might not be needed, but my dogs like to wrestle and they sometimes bite at the device/collar.
@dennisboone8369
@dennisboone8369 4 года назад
Thanks. I was wondering if attaching the device to the collar ring would also work rather than tying it to the collar itself.

@@TheMatlacks One of my dogs (german shorthair pointer) rips through the woods daily. The MS-5 keeps getting ripped off the single zip tie I have on there breaks. I'm going to copy your idea of using one wrapped around the face - I think that will solve the issue. So, thanks! BTW, I've modified mine to use a standard off-the-shelf battery. That is a huge moneysaver.

I have a Pitty and he breaks these cheap a@$ transmitters all the time. The plastic tab that the "collar" passes through on the back breaks almost immediately. I cut the tab off, cut a section of metal pen or small tube that fits in depression in the back, and epoxy the metal tube in place. Now I can zip tie the transmitter to his collar and the back no longer breaks. You do have to cut the zip ties whenever you have to change the battery (which is a whole other issue - and flaw). The doors work great but these transmitters must make the company a ton of money due to their poor quality.
@amandanorcross858
@amandanorcross858 4 месяца назад
I am having that problem now. We zip tie to their collars and the plastic tab has broken on all three transmitters. The company gives zero customer service. I asked to purchase backs and they told me I had to buy all new transmitters! The tube is a great idea I’m going to try that if I can find collar #2 that went missing yesterday when the tab broke off!!
