Thank you for sharing your technique! Adding the wool fabric is a brilliant idea. I will be sure to add this step from now on. I just started making these a few days ago and found a great tutorial video. But your instructions take the Kokedama process to a higher level! Your Kokedamas are so gorgeous. Peace & Mahalo from O'ahu!

Wow... your koke collection is a DREAM ✨✨ I'm a Japanese, and I find it really cool that you recreate so many kinds of plants into kokedama - since in Japan, we usually use Japanese-looking plants for kokedama and don't even think of combining a western-looking plant with Japanese aesthetics. I hope this traditional method revives in Japanese homes as well. Btw your orchids are beautiful! I will definitely make one for my own too. Thanks from Japan 🇯🇵💕

I love them! Love the bowls you crafted too. I have 2 questions. How do you water the ones not in a bowl? Also do plants do well in the enclosed cases you show or only certain types of plants? Those look really nice but I've never enclosed a plant before. Would be great so my cats dont try to eat them! Looks so nice that way too! You're such a great teacher!
@janlakey2465
@janlakey2465 4 года назад
Hi Trish I water mine by placing it in a bowl and then letting it drain before putting it back. You can also mist them everyday which will help keep the moss alive. The enclosed glass vessel is called a cloche. Plants that like high humidity do best like ferns. Succulents don’t do well because they like it dry. Thanks for watching and thanks for your questions. So glad my teaching was clear.

I fell in love with the art of Kodedama, after I purchased one at a festival. I purchased one for $100.00 and did not realize how easy it was. Now I want to make my own. I love your idea of repurposing. So thank you so much for the idea. I have seen other ways to make kokedama using peat moss and cocount coir. Do you think the wool fabric works best over these??
@janlakey2465
@janlakey2465 Год назад
Hi sheena. Wow $100 that’s a lot of money. I am glad you got curious to make ur own. The reason I used the wool fabric was to try and keep the moss moist without growing mold. Wool is antibacterial naturally and breathes. It worked ok but you still have to keep an eye on it daily to make sure it doesn’t dry out. I went away for a week and came back to dried out moss. Honestly…You don’t have to use anything but moss to make one. I have done it both ways and I believe the wool helped keep it moist but not as much as I was hoping. I have not compare it to peat moss and core. Have fun and experiment it’s fun to make and you will be addicted for sure after making one. Keep me posted if you find something that works better. Thanks Jan

@janlakey2465
@janlakey2465 2 года назад
Hi Julian Thanks for the wonderful comment. It is much the same as a potted plant. When you transplant a plant to a bigger pot it’s because the plant has grown so much it out grows it’s container. However I am not certain because I did not keep any of my moss balls that long to find out. The hardest part is keeping the moss alive. You need to keep them moist.

@janlakey2465

Hi Adi, Thanks so much for your kind feedback and encouragement. I am working on some new videos. I would not recommend succulents because they like dry climate and moss likes moist climate. You could try using dry moss and just use a dropper to water the succulent that might work.

Yes. Any 100% wool will work. You can also make it without the wool. My theory behind the wool was to keep it moist longer to help keep the moss alive. Misting every day is a must. You don’t need to repot unless you’re plant gets to big.

Hi peti sorry about your moss garden. It happens. Moss is very tricky to keep happy once you take it out of its natural habitat. @janlakey2465
@janlakey2465 Год назад
As I said in the video you can buy the fabric usually where they sell castor oil because it is used to make castor oil packs. Health food store or drug store in the USA. Hope that helps. BTW you don’t have to use the fabric and it will still work it was something I was trying to see if it helped keep the moss alive longer. It did but ultimately it dried out in the end. Unless you are super diligent each day in looking after your moss ball it will parish. You have to think of it as a cut flower it’s end will come eventually. Have fun and enjoy the process. Cheers

@jasonharrington7521 Год назад
This is very thorough! My process is much faster, but mine are more suitable for a tray as opposed to hanging in a tree. I use hemp twine, and I don't do the step with the fabric because I use smaller plants than can just be plugged in after the ball is done. Your method is very professional, if I only had the patience. Also, I like how you used fern moss for this.
