I’m probably not your typical audience - an old lady artist and graphic designer (meaning in my 50s and a super old school weirdo)… Never been to a con, never vended at an artist alley, no clue about any of the fandoms you mention. BUT I’ve followed you Mualcaina for a while now because you explain very well how you put yourself out there at artist alleys/shows, how you approach social media, run your brand and evolve your approach to your small business. And bonus, today’s interview was not just fun with a lot of useful info to fellow artists in this space… you both highlighted perfectly an introvert’s and extravert’s take on it all. The advice about consistency over passion is spot on. Just wanted you to know you reach beyond the audience you might expect

I haven't watched this yet, but I'm very concerned. As someone who runs an artist alley at a con and selects the artists, I feel artist alleys should be a way for artists to meet face to face with their customers and try to not pick people with proxies to be in our artist alley. There's a lot of potential issues with art theft, to begin with. How do I know this proxy is being paid by the artist vs printing off someone else's prints and saying they're a proxy? There's also so much saturation with people wanting to be in the artist alley, proxies push out the starting artists that want to have that personal connection to their audience. I will try to come back and watch this video later and give feedback, but this is my initial reaction to "how to *make money* as a proxy" as the title. I don't like the idea of people proxying for the cash (though being a helper sounds great, many artists need the help)

Thank you for your feedback! I understand the concerns with proxying, which is why many cons have begun to ban proxies, and I don't condone trying to secretly get past that ban either. In the video, Shamima points out some reasons why artists may choose to proxy, such as not being able to vend in the US as they are not from the US, having a fear of flying on a plane, etc. I have also heard of instances in which some artists deal with stalkers and must have a proxy for their own safety while securing a form of income. Shamima also mentions that there are situations in which an emergency occurs and so an artist may need to send a last minute proxy so that they aren't marked as a no-show. If they did not show, it's a potential loss of income or the artist may be afraid they would get blacklisted by a con (despite giving some notice). With the concern of AI and stolen work, I have seen cons jury artists closely to ensure they are truly selling their work (ex: providing sketches, providing some type of proof that the design is theirs, etc). I have not been on the jury side nor have worked as Artist Alley staff so I can't say much from that perspective besides as an artist applying to these cons. This video was meant to educate those who may be interested in going into Artist Alley as a helper or proxy, so that they are not taken advantage of, as I have heard of horror stories between artists and helpers/proxies due to miscommunication, etc. I know of some artists who are intimidated by vending on their own in the beginning, who also start out as a helper or proxy first to be more familiar with bigger and busier cons. While the title and information touches upon Artist Alley, this is also applicable for events such as food markets or vendor halls where proxies are more common.
