Read this after watching the video so it sticks: No warm-up drawings Think of the value of a drawing (don't do drawings that have no value) Think about your drawings (before, during and after drawing) Document your process Finish your animations Don't reinvent the wheel Fail Early (whenever possible) Use reference Work in batches (e.g. don't close your software that takes a long time to open; do everything you need to do in there at once)

well obviously the drawings would have value well while animating/drawing thinking about your drawings before,during and after is kinda just basic stuff yeah i would obviously document it Finish your animations

It's very refreshing to hear that warm-up drawings aren't necessary and that doing a lot of pre-production thinking before actually drawing is good. I'm a natural thinker and planner, I build up a whole story in my head before sitting down and drawing one frame of it, and I was always being shamed for "not letting my drawing hand just run free and draw tons of whatever before I get the one drawing I initially wanted done". Thank you for voicing this point of view.

When I think of warm up drawings I always thought you kinda are exploring possibilities for what you're going to do for the finished product but if it's aimless I can see it not being helpful

disagree with number 1. warm ups are a good chance to practice experimentation, but also to relax and frame art positively before a work session. an unstructured warm-up is a nice breather from the strain of constant workload, which helps prevent burnout. only doing drawings with a structured goal leads to a lack of freedom that can actually inhibit you discovering new ways of creating. i used to only create goal-oriented work, and that *severely* negatively affected the development of my style. i've had more artistic growth in the past 5 months of experimentation than i have in the past 4 years of goal-oriented work. better point imo is that you don't *have* to do warm-ups, especially not before every session. but they do have merits besides "throwaway doodles". it's important to balance art as work, and art as an experience.

What great advice to help people further advance your art projects! I love the idea of having a goal and thinking about what you want to draw instead of using a warm up drawing and not thinking about what you draw. It actually make sense to be goal orientated and have the idea in your head to draw effectively and efficiently. Another great video

I’ve made the mistake of putting too much effort on a scene (too much frames in an effort to make the scene look smoother) but in the end I realized it looked off and doesn’t really fit in well when I watched the whole thing. So now I’m going through a dilemma of whether I should delete it or not (because I feel bad for all the time wasted)

Thanks for the tips and guides. When you start something you must finish it. One must do things with purpose unless you're *Kim Jung Gi* who can do what de hec he wants. I like art and the beauty of it is that it can be applied to life which is technically and logically means that everything is art. Anyways, I think a video about *principles of art applied to animation* would be helpful. I know the fundamentals are to be learned but we also would love to see your perspective on these principles.

I saw a video on why you are leaving flash. 1. Are you satisfied with TVPaint now? 2.what were the numbers and alphabets for in that mowgli work?
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 5 лет назад
1. I'm happy in TVPaint, however it is certainly not the perfect program - it has problems of its own which I can put up with. 2. That is my own sort of code for my keyframes - it is a little unorthodox at times because i don't use a timesheet - I find that timesheets make my animation very stiff and lifeless. Usually I only use the code in the corner for traditional animation on a lightbox but for this one i wanted each frame to also be identified as i was handing it into my class for some group feedback.

There was an informative comment chain I was apart of that got removed for some reason so I'll try to paraphrase what it was saying, the person who I will just call Player was saying he disliked the video since someone like Howard doesn't finalize his work since it's very sketchy and rough which I'll agree with. After I read some replies I replied as well saying roughness isn't bad if it isn't over the top roughness, Player replied back saying he was just saying he needed to have more outlined finished work and he really needs to work on his bland expressions which I really do agree with. I replied back again agreeing and he was very nice so I'll add my two cents about it, Howard when you're trying you make amazing animations but I think your lack of draftsmanship really hurts you in the long run. Your lack of foundation hinders your work and not always putting in the effort to make your work look good really doesn't help and Howard if you're reading this, this is coming from a place of love not hate I want to see you improve and you have so much potential please don't waste it.
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 5 лет назад
Just know that if you're posting comments on my videos; this is my domain here on the internet and if I see comment chains in here which are insulting me and patronizing then I will delete the comment chain. I don't have the time or patience for negativity. That is the very low bar that I set for people who benefit from my videos. I give courtesy to everyone and I expect it in return. You can set up a little forum somewhere in some corner of the internet where your buddies can all take turns criticizing my work without any filters. Just don't do it on my video where I have to scroll past it and read it.

@Deepest Red Last reply I'll add to this chain, someone on the discord server said this on the situation which I think helped me think about this better "He posted a video giving advice on time-saving and some guy criticizes something completely unrelated and says you shouldn't be giving advice. He didn't want that in his comment section so deleted it, but then someone else brings it up again. " So for Howards sake I'll stop the replying now
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 5 лет назад
@Deepest Red 1) Ok I don't think I should even need to do this, it's pretty obvious but since you don't seem to get it and you're being very persistent, I'll spell it out for you. I am not forcing anyone to do anything. IF you like my work and want to hear my opinion and benefit from my advice, you can listen to what I say. If you disagree, you're not being forced to do anything. Please don't pretend that you lack the free will to make basic decisions for yourself, and certainly don't imply that my audience doesn't have the agency or intellect to come to their own conclusions. Sure, I'm still learning animation. I'm going to continue learning animation until I die one day. You can never learn everything there is to know about the subject. I never claim to know everything. "Learn the art of animation" - That includes me. I learn the art of animation. we're all learning. Even you, the apparently all-knowing "Deepest Red", have a lot more to learn. 2) Now you're saying I get defensive about criticism. Nope. Critical feedback is nothing new to me. I took on board your points of criticism. I'll take on-board criticism from anyone, anywhere. How I choose to act on that criticism is my decision. Voicing your criticism to an artist does not by default give you the power to force them to change their approach. As it turns out, I am actively working towards improving my character animation and draftsmanship skills - I'm sure you will be happy to know. Numerous colleagues (That's right, I graduated with a first class BA degree in Animation and I am a full-time working professional) have advised me that as an artist it will open up more doors to me if I can demonstrate clean animation, more nuanced character animation and stronger design fundamentals. I am actively working on it. You have assumed that i was getting defensive about criticism, when I already explained why I deleted the comment chain. I deleted it because contained within the fair criticism was rude, patronizing insults from another RU-vid user, the kind of slander that could damage my reputation. That is uncalled for. And just because this is the internet doesn't mean you can just drop courtesy when talking to me or about me. 3) Looks like you are falling into the same old problem that so many other overly emotional critics do. Again, I'm going to need to spell out something that should be obvious: this is a specific video, to help people with a specific problem - that of wanting to make more drawings in less time. All of my videos are this way. I would never make a video which says "everything you need to know about animation". Similarly, I could sympathize with your point more if the video was called "why cleanup is never important in animation". but I'm not saying that. Looks like you have such a strong agenda towards advocating cleanup that you cannot even see that is not relevant to what I am talking about in the video. 4) You feel super strongly about clean outlining and neatness. Okay I get it dude. That's your thing that you're crazy about. I disagree with your opinion. Sorry! You're probably inspired by very different people than I am. I'm inspired by Glen Keane. He doesn't do his own cleanup. Ever. He is specifically a key animator, cleanup is not in his job description. He made a beautiful film called Duet, you might have heard of it - it was a huge success. And shock horror! it wasn't made with clean lines! Say what you want about that but he is one of the most commercially successful animators in the world and, well, numbers don't lie. Aesthetically, I am very inspired by Russ Mills, Tkki, Moustashrik and many others who choose vivid artistic expression - sometimes straying into the world of the abstract - over a compulsion for neatness. And you know what? You still haven't explained WHY being neat is so compulsory. Why do you think it is so necessary to dull down the vivid dynamic energy of some fresh key animation with some cold sterile clean lines? Animation is an expressive medium, we are not confined to the boundaries of the physical realm, and we can use this to our advantage to express ideas in ways that no other medium is able to. So I'll ask again. Why do you think neat lines are so compulsory? 5) Okay, I really didn't want to go on the offensive here. I've now taken a look at your channel, and you appear to be about as far away from "industry professional" as you could possibly get. And after all of that talk about how important it is to finish your work, I see nothing but poorly drawn, rushed pieces of unfinished work with terrible proportions. So really, who is in the right when it comes to giving out advice? Certainly not you. It seems like on one hand you are saying that I am not fit to be giving advice on the internet, whilst simultaneously posing as a guru who knows it all. So if anyone is giving out potentially harmful unqualified instructions to other animators, it is you. So now my criticism to you: If you're going to take apart my work, at least don't be a hypocrite. This will be my last response to this. It is taking up too much of my time when I should be working and frankly, it is tedious to explain things to you which should be obvious. If you stop coming to your own conclusions and you drop these absurd biases you have against me and my work, then we can have a proper discussion.
