About the SOFTWARE I use in the video: A huge amount of my production involves Adobe CC (my affiliate link tinyurl.com/v7fvqgo) I use Adobe photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, Audition and sometimes Animate. I would be nowhere without these softwares. You can get them all with a comfortable monthly subscription, or you can get subscriptions to individual plans. Check them out and see what works for you. The main software I'm using to actually animate frame by frame is called TVPaint. Here's more information on that: www.tvpaint.com/ It's a great software :) And if you need a Graphics tablet, I highly recommend this one for you ballers out there: geni.us/vy8xUZB It's the best tablet money can buy :) And here's a great low-low cost alternative: geni.us/LLYv

I can literally visualize in my head what I want to draw, but when I put it down on paper or digitally it never comes out how I see it in my mind, so frustrating
@Devorantem
@Devorantem 5 лет назад
That's because you don't have the technical acumen. You can visualize all you want, if you don't have the actual knowledge, it'll come out all wrong. Practicing and studying is the key.. It's like playing an instrument. You may be able to "hear" the melody in your head, but if you've never played the piano before, for example, you can't just sit down and pound away at the keys and produce the sound you hear in your head. Same thing applies to drawing.
@daubpunk5326
@daubpunk5326 5 лет назад
I can draw nearly anything I set my mind to, Its how I make a living and I still practice the most basic things every day. If you want to be able to draw, practice drawing lines. Start with two points across a page, connect them with a line. Do this until you can draw a single line straight and hit those points and quickly with a single attempt and without a ruler. When you feel confident in that, you make more points and add curves to your line. When you can draw a curved line that is smooth and quick and consistent and hits every point draw a circle. When you can draw a circle or an ellipse as confidentially as the straight line and the curved line, learn perspective and how to apply your lines, curves and ellipses. To draw things correctly or purposefully incorrectly you need to first be able to draw the basic things with consistency. If you do the basics repeatedly you’ll be amazed at how quickly your mind and muscles will figure out how to put those ideas in your head on paper.
@weronika7596
@weronika7596 5 лет назад
That's why you should first practise by drawing as much as you can; so you can bring your ideas on paper. Things like anatomy, plants, animals, landscapes etc. At least that's my opinion.
@Devorantem
@Devorantem 5 лет назад
@@daubpunk5326 I would argue practicing lines is a complete waste of time. That is a supplemental skill that should be developed naturally and over time *as* you practice learning how to draw whatever it is you want.. Being able to draw the perfect line will bring someone 0% closer to drawing anything. Thus, it's literally a useless skill as it relates to functional, applicable knowledge. Not to mention, telling a beginner to sit down and "practice lines" is the perfect way to destroy their motivation to draw.
@daubpunk5326
@daubpunk5326 5 лет назад
@Devorantem being able to draw the perfect line brings someone 0% closer to drawing anything? This is literally a method that professionals teach, I’ve taught, to people. Its about drawing the basic things and is hands down a quicker way to be more confident in drawing. Everyone just believes the only way you can learn is by drawing still life’s all day. I never said you have to only do these things, it can be one page of practice and then have at it. It’s just a method to practice fundamentals .To completely discount what I said, I think, is wrong.

@Fatmata Jalloh You doodle. Like...doodle badly. Purposely doodle like shit. Make scribbles, make a weird, ugly face without thinking about it. Draw a cube. Or a square. Or a squircle. @SubNorm4L
@SubNorm4L 5 лет назад
Fatmata Jalloh I made it an habit. I don't really care if the picture i'm making looks good or beautiful, ugly or crappy. I just care about what i can learn doing it. I love the act of drawing so much that i just enjoy more the process than the final result, just doing what i love even if its not that good. That helped me a lot in my motivation. Also, i stopped comparing myself to others, and i don't post my work on social media. I just compare my recent work with my old work and well, there is ALWAYS a huge improvement. Be careful with things like "inspiration" if you want to become a professional. 90% of the time, you will be drawing for another person. It's sad and shitty, but it is what it is. When things get hard, the passion for your work will not let you leave art. Art can be everything about freedom and creativity, but can also be painful and stressful. Take care.

@SmileyFreak 6 лет назад
Howard Wimshurst actually there’s a lot of cognitive benefits to playing games it’s not a waste at all, and there’s a lot of creative ones out there created by amazing artist which arguably could used to spark inspiration for your own art. But this isn’t about that, I actually agree, playing games isn’t productive at all for most people, but after a long stressful day of nothing but drawing why not play a game? 🤷🏾‍♀️
@tarz1109
@tarz1109 6 лет назад
@@SmileyFreak Games spark inspiration, but so much more can be learnt for that instance when you put it aside and sit at the desk. No doubt video games bring about beautiful and inspirational experiences, but if one was to transfer all the hours they spent on video games to a certain skill, no doubt they would become a master at that skill. If it were exercise, they would be healthy; if it were books, they would be ahead of the class. It becomes wasteful depending on how much you play.
@TheInsaneum
@TheInsaneum 6 лет назад
Drawing every day (or at least most days) should be "practice" and not "performance". You dont need an idea when studying from a photo, anatomie book or another artist. This is what you should do as much as possible so that you have the propper skill when "performing" an idea that you have. If you see drawing every day as a performance, of course youre gonna have a bad time. And another very important thing you learn is how to draw when you dont feel like drawing. Sometimes you just have to push through and work even if you dont feel like it in the moment. So by drawing every day you learn how to finish a project that you dont feel like working on anymore and youll be much happier for having finished it. Even Kim Jung Gi said he had a hard time drawing every day just like everyone else but after a while he learned to love it and so can you... (I think)
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 6 лет назад
That's a good distinction, practice vs performance, and one that I had not thought of mentioning. Good idea! I was thinking a lot about Kim Jung Gi when making this video, well actually, more about the disciples of Kim Jung Gi. I find him very inspiring, he has excellent work ethic and its great that artists are emulating that work ethic. But I also wanted to provide people with an alternative way of thinking about their craft. Kim Jung Gi is often described as "a machine", and the discussion around his artwork and the artwork of his contemporaries gets flattened down into a matchup of some very shallow aspects - things like how well can he render something, how precise is the perspective, how well he can memorize the components of an engine, how many drawings he makes per day. These are some examples. He is championed as one of the best illustrators in the world. I am not disputing that, but (in my opinion) people rate him for the wrong reasons. Kim Jung Gi is a fantastic illustrator. So is Goro Fujita. With Goro Fujita, no one is talking about how many drawings he can make. They talk about how the image is so imaginative and tells a great story with a vivid emotions.

Personally if I have an idea for a drawing and can't draw right away I try to write it down and then not think about it. If I think about it too much and get really excited for it then when I do start drawing it I find that I can't draw to the standard that I have set in my head and I get frustrated and end up throwing it out. I do a really weird thing when I have an art block- I end up just taking my pencil and making up bunch of squiggles on the paper, never lifting the pencil up. I think the fear of not being good enough is a larger "life problem". It will follow you everywhere you go and it will not stop until you are an old man.. So quitting art will not make the problem go away. It would probably make the problem worse. Or, something much worse would take its place: regret. Take a step back, look at the bigger picture. Who do you want to be? Do you want to be the guy who gave up? The guy who let the doubt win? The guy who let others decide his fate? The guy who fell in line with the rest of them to accept a mediocre existence? The guy who didn't follow his own passion and went on to live a life of regret? Or do you want to be the guy who didn't have all of the advantages of his contemporaries? The guy who wasn't naturally gifted. The guy who was doubted by everyone for years, but did it anyway because he loved it. The guy who took the long way round. The guy who said **** it, I'm going to do what I love doing, despite the sensible advice of the people around him. The guy who patiently honed his craft for years. The guy who understood that REAL skill needs to be developed over time. The guy who understands that the only long lasting metric that matters is passion. The guy who came through in the end to discover his true ability, and then offered it to the whole world as a beautiful gift. The choice is yours ;)

@HowardWimshurst 6 лет назад
@@DarkChamberEnigma Whats the point of making art? There can be multiple reasons. And it depends how you think. I recommend thinking big. All of the great role models in history thought big and that's how they made such an impact. making art for therapy is thinking extremely small. I suppose it is fine for someone who just picks up a pencil every now and then, but for the ones who dedicate themselves, there is a lot that is and has been accomplished with animation and art. Even if you just look at animation, Animation, it is a powerful form of communication. We can use it to teach and learn about the human condition (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2xp22IYL2uU.html), To meditate on life and purpose (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KTvYh8ar3tc.html) We can use it to spread joy and beauty, to make our day to day experience more interesting and fun (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QIS2JhWli_A.html). Nice video but it seems that it's more for those who've been drawing for a while rather than a total beginner, at least in terms of coming up with ideas. I can edit well but I don't have many original ideas. THAT'S what's frustrating. What's worse is when I see what others have produced, it makes me feel nothing but envy & really kills whatever motivation I might have had. Sad, but true.
@HowardWimshurst
@HowardWimshurst 5 лет назад
Yes I think you're right to think that. I would agree with you - it is for people with some drawing experience already. I have been drawing for many years and I'm not great at writing from perspectives other than my own. The videos I make are sort of target towards people who are close to my situation. The notion of original ideas is very much disputed by creatives. So... in a way original ideas IS like an advanced form of editing. So that's lucky for you! Your problem with envy - I would need to make a special video for that. Basically I believe that is not an art problem at all. But no little "tips and tricks" video on RU-vid is going to make it all better. This is a deep problem with your character and it will take a lot of work to be at peace with yourself. I would perhaps suggest that you talk to monks and maybe look into Budhism. I myself do not practice Budhism, but then again I do not hold much jealousy... Or you could talk to a therapist - they might help you get to the bottom of why you feel this way. It is a very serious character flaw and if you do not confront it, it will hold you back for the rest of your days and could seriously handicap you - not just the results you get, but in your outlook on life. My outlook - art is a gift. Give us your gift. Forget the other artists. Forget labels of good art and bad art. It is all art. Forget any idea of rankings you have, it doesn't exist. Be passionate. Celebrate the art you love, and let your own art be a reflection of that love. Enjoy the process, forget about the results for a minute. Make something for the sake of making something, don't judge it. Don't even judge yourself. Art is happening through you, let others enjoy the gift you have.

I was drawing since I was a child but not long ago decided to draw for real, train basics and become proffesional graphician. Everywhere ppl say to draw boxes, basic shapes, draw them draw draw draw, then vegetables etc. That is really irritating that I cant draw well this what I would like (angels, battle scenes, my universe etc). I totally dont have problem with ideas for drawings but have to block myself to draw boxes because I totally lack in technique -_- that is so annoying but as I understand I have to draw them for months or years :V From the other hand I cant just look at comples building and write it on my paper cause its exausts me with tons of details :V Sorry for that grumble but had to wrote that :V

I'm so happy that I found this video! I grew up most of my life believing that I had to draw every single day, thinking that I was going to get somewhere. While, yes, it's true to practice drawing regularly so you improve, I was too concerned about making my art look pretty rather then sharing the idea/ message with people. Thanks again for this video, this has been so helpful!!!!

I honestly think that getting hired to do animation is helping me improve a lot, *because* it forces me to do things. When there's an outside force *making* you draw, you somehow manage to do things you never thought you'd be able to, and you find neat shortcuts because they were *necessary* When I do work for myself, I always end up doing things the long and hard way, because I feel I need to do it without cheats to practice. But getting hired has taught me how to get the job done by any means necessary.

This may be some of the best advice I've seen in a RU-vid video. Especially for those working or looking to work professionally. This is generally how fine artists work, they don't have typically have less extrinsic goal and yet they can work consistently without sacrificing their intrinsic value for art-making.

Mate, if only I could draw like you! Unfortunately for myself I’ve been trying to draw for over 10 years and haven’t got anywhere. I blame my asperger’s and learning difficulties for this… plus my anxiety, depression and lack of self confidence and esteem :(. All I have been told to do by others is to practice. I don’t get anywhere! :( plus all the tricks and stuff you use on photoshop… I wished I knew how to do…

Gamers usually don't have inspiration problems to draw something. Same for my writing.. I guess it is productive ;) instead of sittingand thinking about what to draw, I am there getting inspiration playing video games :o but also this can be done by going out, watching objects, reading a story, watching a movie,..

That negative spiral is literally my life right now. I love drawing but have stopped doing so often because lack of motivation and ideas and then after a while of no practice it's frustrating to try to get back to the level you were before.

The best illustrations have a story... maybe not a LONG story... but a moment that people can decipher. Maybe a kid just dropped his ice cream and a dog is running to lick it up. Maybe a girl is rearing back to punch a bully in the face while he laughs at her. Anything can be a story. Anyone can write a story. Write little stories like this and keep them somewhere. Soon you'll have so many "drawing" ideas you may not know where to start. Now, there's no excuse for not having any ideas about what to draw.

Oh yeah, I have definitely had that issue. so I got jazzas arty ap, and that has helped. the other thing you could do is buy a 20 sided dice (you can pick them up at any nerdy game store for like 50 cents to a dollar) and then make a list of 20 things that you would like to practice drawing. Then roll the dice three times and try incorporating those three things in your next drawing. for example a dragon, a car and a building. then let your mind go wild with putting those three topics together. I should actually do that I my channel, anyway keep drawing friends.

Not only are you an amazing artist, but you are also a very insightful speaker. I really felt the mesh between the arts and philosophy in your discussions especially when you were talking about the idea of art as an exploration. It really brought me back to the topics of finding meaning and contentment in my philosophy class. You are a true artist.

Wow this video was really helpful, I currently have a problem with drawing and that is I'm currently drawing the same thing over and over again. I started to draw around a year ago and started off drawing characters from cartoons and video games, but a little while ago i improved a bit and only use like a reference for drawing, like maybe a pose from a character, and for a while I saw a little improvement in myself but for a like two months now I've only been drawing characters, similar looking characters with different poses, and it kinda bore me and I wasn't having fun anymore, I haven't drawn in like a week, and then I saw this video and it really spoke to me and it was really inspiring and enough to get me back into drawing, so tnx, very nice

It so adorable to see in what romantic light young artists see art. I promise you, when you'll become older, you will see art only as a craft. Blacksmithing, wood carving... drawing. You are professional artist and you should know what is "deadline" and realizing someone's vision. Where is exploration in that? :)

Trying to draw everyday is hard for me.. I’m always inside my house, never going anywhere. I never have an idea what to draw, everybody says in my class that I’m the best at drawing and I think I am but when I tell them “I don’t draw all the time” they just turn silent, and it’s so confusing. Having a few drawings, is that being a good drawer.. so I thought maybe if I just not draw I’ll get better but that’s not what happends. No I do not have a Style I just draw what I think of, that’s my technique. *Drawing. Is. Hard. For. Me.*

As a young artist, draw from life. And not on a computer. Build your visual library. As well very your styles. Critiques from other artists are crucial. Experiment with materials. My suggestion as an educated artist of over 50 years. When asked to draw say I only draw flies, lol. Doing work for clients sadly burns you out and you will neglect your own work.

I actually do have a lot of ideas that I’ve written down over the years.. yeah, years - But most of them I’ve never even tried doing, because I feel like I’m not good enough to draw them and I don’t have the skills do be doing something like that yet. And then I just wait and put them off and draw stuff I’m familiar with. I know it’s really stupid because that how you learn, but yeah...

Is copying a good way to improve? Is there a possibility to rely on copying too much to improve? Obviously not to claim the art as your own, but to practice. I often find myself going to Google, searching my favorite character or random items and start copying what I see. Will this interfere with my creativity when wanting to draw my own art? I often find myself having trouble on putting my own ideas onto paper so I just end up copying something I like.

You have some interesting things to say. Perhaps writing out a script before recording would help you get your ideas across more clearly. Also, the digital stuff in the video was terribly distracting - too much shifting and flickering. The music was an unnecessary distraction as well.

I kinda had to do something like that for a baby and her parents. I was working for a hospital and they gave this little baby an inflated glove. I had a ping of inspiration I borrowed it for 30 seconds and I doodled a quick anime style face on the inflated glove. The baby liked it so much he/she actually kissed it. Kinda made me happy I was still inexperienced at the time.
