A fun DIY project for making a version of mushroom spawn from wild oyster mushrooms. While this isn't the most vigorous spawn you'll come across, this is a neat way to get familiar with your local fungi and how spawn works.

Thanks for this helpful tutorial. I've managed to propogate oyster store bought mushrooms and now experimenting with wine cup mushrooms. Wine cups are aggressive species too.

Excellent! What was the tree variety that you used in your sampling? Have you also tried this method with other species? (like chickens of the woods or Lion's mane?)
@FieldandForestProducts
@FieldandForestProducts Год назад
In the sample that had the mushrooms fruiting it was aspen. We've tried others and they take a REALLY LONG TIME. Lion's Mane is a slow growing fungus the way it is, so it's best to use a vigorous spawn. Same goes for Chicken.

Wonderful video! I was wondering if there’s a way to do this without a plastic bag. Thanks!

This is wonderful! Currently soaking cardboard :) can I use this method to inoculate straw and grow in a bucket?

Assuming I pasteurize the straw and use the cardboard spawn in a layering fashion?
@FieldandForestProducts
@FieldandForestProducts Год назад
@@EmiRules It depends on the mushroom- if you're using oyster, then in all likelihood yes!

Does this also apply on magic shrooms ?

you could try it, but it is much less likely to work due to them being less aggressive than oyster mushrooms

do you think this would work with wild Reshi mushrooms?
@FieldandForestProducts
@FieldandForestProducts 2 месяца назад
It's worth a shot, but since it's not as aggressive as oyster mushrooms it'll probably prove more difficult.

initiating the spawn, i note that you care little about contamination - what is your chance of success ?
@FieldandForestProducts
@FieldandForestProducts Год назад
For something like this it very much depends on the type of mushroom you are using. If oysters, the chance for success is very high as they are so aggressive. If you're attempting something like a shiitake, then the chances will be much lower.

oyster mushrooms are very agressive which helps against contam., but the cardboard method also uses a very high mushroom tissue to substrate ratio. There's a lot of mushroom for very little cardboard, compared to say a syringe plug in a liquid culture. That also helps keep contamination at bay. this is a great method to add a new wild species to your collection when out in the field and you don't have proper equipment with you, but in the long term it's more efficient to grow from liquid cultures and grain spawn, even if you have to be more careful about contamination.

@@rfldss89 … the cardboard method is great for someone starting out with logs , not every one is an expert like you .
