My grandma used to make this for us kids around Christmas time. It was always an occasional treat so rare that I often forgot all about it. But I recently realized it couldn’t be too hard to make it myself, and since my wife has a dairy allergy, I wanted to make a dairy-free version for her. With the help of this tutorial, I finally created my own, and it was everything I hoped it would be. Thanks!
I'm not sure how many chocolate chips are in a regular bag, but that's how many I use. I am making some right now and I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right so I watch the video. I am adding red and green m&Ms and extra thin pretzel sticks and calling it reindeer chow!
Another easy way to coat the cereal with powered sugar is to fill a new grocery paper bag with the powdered suger then dump in the chocolate covered chex mix. Give the bag some good shakes & it's done! Also a fun way for the kids to join in & help😊 a little less messy. Thanks for the recipe! Great video!
I melted everything on the stovetop since I didn’t have a big enough microwave safe bowl and it turned out perfect! I’m so excited to take these to a family gathering this weekend 💕 you rock!
I’ve been making this for almost 30 years. Paper bag is the easiest way to coat with the powdered sugar. Also Crispex cereal is shaped like puppy chow dog food and is more authentic looking, as it’s more expensive I quit using it. I sometimes serve it in a clean, new doggie dish for fun. Fixing to make some today for my nieces birthday. I’ve been making it for her for 15 years for her birthday present.
Thank you for this recipe! We just made it for the first time and it’s definitely going to be part of our Christmas treat repertoire. Thank you! Merry Christmas!!!

This is my go-to snack for pulling all-nighters working on art projects. The lazy method mixes everything by shaking in a quart bag, and I also like to add cheerios!!!!
I've wanted to make these! Imma make this recipe in a couple days, I'll update how it goes! Update: They turned out great! Even my dad thought they were good the next day after they've been in the fridge. He says they are addicting and he is right. But after seeing for myself the amount of powered sugar I had to use, these are def a once in a blue moon, kind of treat lol when i tried them when I first made them I could feel my blood sugar rise lol
hey i just made this recipe and i did a whole box with one bag chocolate morsels...looked like i needed more chex..anyhow my first time making this.. i think i did well . nice recipe😋🥰
Sugar spun run thank you for the recipe! Always haters out there, keep your head up!! I just made this and love the extra coating😃 And while some dogs are ok with chocolate some are not... Vets recommend no chocolate so you are not "dumb" for stating that!!
I love puppy chow! I used to make it all the time with my grandma, I am hoping I can make some soon. I usually hate peanut butter, but it is so good like this!
I AGREE, for whatever reason I tried using the butter 2 different times and it seized. Maybe I did something wrong but it just made it easier just using chocolate alone
I tried this recipe twice and it was great at first, but both times I noticed it had a bit of a chewy texture after about a day, almost like it was stale even though all of the ingredients were newly purchased. I saw a post somewhere saying it might be the water content in the butter causing that (I was using Country Crock brand, other brands may vary). I tried it a 3rd time using clarified butter (which has no water) and it fixed the issue. 3 days on and it's still crispy. So if anyone else encounters the same problem, give that a try.
I suppose you can use whatever kind of cereal you would like. The chex are pretty plain rice cereal without much flavor. I would stick to something like that. :)
Just fyi, I used weight to measure the ingredients & the peanut butter is about 180 grams for 3/4 cup (you have 210 in your description). I’m not sure why there’s a discrepancy, maybe some PB’s are more dense than others, but I was just curious where that came from or if anyone else noticed/had any issues. I’m in the middle of making these now & I’m going with 180g of PB.
210 is the weight I use and what it measures for me. The weights listed in my recipes are what I bake with myself and what I recommend, I hope that helps! 💜
@@SugarSpunRun ok, maybe it just varies by brand or something 🤷♀️. I ended up adding more PB because when I tasted the chocolate mixture it definitely needed more! I always start low, can always add more but can’t take it out! Came out great. Thanks for the help 😁
i don't have a mircrowave, could this work by melting in sauce pan or would it be done the same way but dip the bowl in hot water for it to melt ? sorry not a baker (:
I tried making puppy chow last Christmas season and had a really hard time. It just got thick and clumpy right away I couldn't stir it to coat everything.
O no! Sounds like the chocolate may have been heated too quickly or too much and it just started seizing on you. Next time try just melting it in short increments until it's all just melted and hopefully that will help. :)
