How To Make Simplicity Complex

Hi! In this video, I talk about why Genshin is "easy" to understand. There are a lot of rabbit holes in this game, especially dealing with resistances and ICD. In this video, I explain resistances and ICD, as well as why players who don't like combat and those who do like combat enjoy the game. Many people like Genshin for a variety of reasons, and here's one of the reasons why I (and hopefully you) enjoy the game. Thanks for watching!

I know this video is focusing on design rather than being a guide, but I'll still point these out because why not: Aggravate and Spread aren't considered Amplifying Reactions since they don't scale with the damage of the hit, so they also don't scale with the units talent scaling stat (Atk, Def, HP). Both reactions scale with Level and Elemental Mastery, like a Transformative Reaction, but differ in the sense that they add their flat amount of damage to the hit, and as such, scale with Crit and Dmg% stats. Also, they heavily differ from Melt and Vape playstyles because the Quicken Aura isn't removed by triggering its subreactions, so Elemental Application is simply "As much as you can", but in Vape / Melt, big hits with low application are better (like Ganyu Charged Shot vs Ayaka Burst). And for Swirl, it's the biggest example of depth (and I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in the video), since on a "base level", it just spread the Pyro/Hydro/Electro/Cryo into other enemies, but the fact that said application can trigger chain reactions, for example, Swirling two enemies, with Pyro and Electro on each will result in both receiving Overload damage (if global ICD permits). As such, teams that focus on said chain reactions, like Taser (Swirling Hydro and Electro for Electro-Charge) or Soup (Applying Pyro onto Electro-Charge to trigger Overload and Vape) show very well that Swirl isn't just a "Supportive Reaction", and even without such teambuilding, Anemo units like Kazuha and Venti deal basically all of their damage because of Swirls. Also related is 0:57 where Electro-Charged has a Soup team as an example, and Swirl shows a team that does not care about Swirls at all. Last thing is that in 2:44, you mention that Shield Breaking doesn't scale with Damage, and only Elemental Application, but that isn't true, most shields in the game do take "Normal Damage" into consideration, the best example being a Hu Tao one-shotting Cryo Heralds with her burst, even if it's just a single instance of Pyro being applied. As such, a lvl1 Childe would not break the shield faster than other options that are built for damage, specially in single target. It's still a good video tho, Genshin is a very good example of allowing such Depth of Skill in the form of knowledge but still being easily executable, for the most part

Really appreciate the corrections in your comment! I genuinely didn't know about the shield damage thing... Does that apply to all shields? I feel like I've noticed that against specific enemies (especially geo shields) but does it apply to abyss mage/lector shields? Seems like I still have a lot to learn...

If the teapot didn't have that pesky "load" limit, it might incentivize players to build more. I always wanted to grow a forest but Mihoyo's load said no 😂😭

This is such a great summary video on this topic. As a late game player I'm only now occasionally listening to elemental gauge theory and different characters icd's. When I first started playing I was so confused at how I was supposed to remember any of the reactions and actually execute them in real time combat. The simplicity and depth of the combat system is really something I've grown to appreciate.

Haha, joke on you, I use the teapot all the time and edit new things here and there + 4.4 will have huge Teapot optimization that we've been asking since 3.7 ^ ^

great video, it really resonates with my frustration with a lot of games that have as you say a lot of linear mechanics. i've been told 'research the combat and you'll like it more' for some games but i think i'd like to learn to enjoy something before i put hours into the nitty-gritty of it.

There was just a small mistake about amplifying reactions: in this category, you combined 2 different types of reactions : multiplicative reactions (vape and melt) which don't scale off character level, and additive reactions (spread and aggravate) which don't scale off atk (or whatevers the character uses)

Oop the spread and aggravate reactions is a mistake, ty lol Vape and melt technically don't scale off of character level, but since they increase your default damage they effectively increase the damage of vape and melt too

This was very fun to watch! Great editing and an interesting topic. The same can be said about exploration. There are quests with markers and instructions, and then there are hidden quests, sometimes taking several days, which you either stumble upon or look up. A casual player, who may be already overwhelmed by the quest log, doesn't even have to know, just how many quests there are really.

Holy buckets I am so happy someone (you) is doing the math and visually explaining it by slowing down clips with further information. It really helps with conceptualizing!!

Actually sheilds do take dmg, but high application is usually the most pragmatic way to go about breaking them

Tbh, I am not sure if this is intended by the developers. The reason I am saying this is because I replayed the beginning of the game lately and the tutorials make it seem way more complicated than it is. When you start Genshin you actually get overloaded with a lot of information (especially text) that isn't even necessary, because they already have tutorial missions that do the same thing in a better way. What I am trying to say is that I think, they mainly cut out the more complicated parts of the systems, because they are very bad at describing gameplay mechanics in a concise way. Just look at artifact set effects or some of the latest skill descriptions. So for them, it would have resulted in a lot of pages of text to write if they went to the deeper aspects. Because let's be honest here for a moment. I don't need a text tutorial to explain to me what freeze does (especially since the tutorial appears AFTER I did the reaction), but it would be really interesting to get a text form of the mechanics that can not be easily observed. They explained the parts they didn't need to explain.
