In this video, I talk about my personal problems with Sumeru. Don't take this video too seriously, it's just my opinion after all. I think Sumeru is fantastic, but these are the things that I feel could've been improved on. Thanks for watching! Oh, and happy holidays lol.
Also how tf do you make a good thumbnail? I spent like 3 hours going through different iterations and this was the best I could come up with. Idk don't be surprised if the thumbnail changes in the future.

@@jonangorman6341 it was kinda frustrating coming from liyue, because inazuma puts a lot of "hats" on the cliffs to stop you from freely climbing", and there were some quest-gated parts too, which sucked. but i agree, i actually like inazuma, and the extra "difficulty" of the overworld was a huge plus for me. plus inazuma STILL has the best artifact and elite routes.

@@jonangorman6341 I felt Inazuma exploration wasn't bad, it just wasn't really exploration. Everything was gated off until later in some questline, like the daily world quests in Tatarasuna, the Sakura tree questline around Yae's shrine, and the Seirai thunderstorm questline. It was really easy if you just followed it step by step and grabbed everything along the quest path, but at that point it's just a very curvy railroad and not really exploring. By contrast, Fontaine brought back some of the OG Liyue/Mondstadt open-world exploration style. Hey what's that in the distance? Lemme run over, do some puzzles, grab some loot, and then ask hey what's that in the distance? There are some areas gated off due to quests, but it's not nearly as suffocating as Inazuma is.

"the map is confusing" ok, but remember when we didn't even have multilayer map for the entirety of Sumeru. They released all those caves and you just had to do them all blind for an entire year. I did 100% sumeru on two accounts with no cave map.... Incidentally, the Fontaine world quest chain is also long as heck and also locks progression. Exploration started getting formulaic and mind-numbingly boring (if not outright frustrating without following the interactive map 24/7) as early as Liyue, just not to the same extent. It got worse with Inazuma. Then Sumeru was just what broke the camel's back. I'm glad that Fontaine seems to return to a simpler more mondstadt-like layout tho (and underwater caves are extremely simple to find, and so was the melusine village), or I don't think I'd have played for longer than a day after taking a hiatus for half a year until recently.

Sure, it was guilty of all of the things you mentioned, however the pros outweighted the cons. However, the desert areas afterwards not only didn't improve on the rainforest, but they doubled down on its issues and on top of that barely entertained any of its strengths. All that remained were tears of frustration and godforsaken sand.

I think that the main problem with Sumeru is that its progression in some cases is linear, which distracts from the freedom that an open world brings. Part of the magic of Genshin's open world for me is that there's so much to do when exploring, and I often find myself getting lost in it. I'll be on track to open a certain chest, but see another chest in the distance, and decide to open that one first so I don't forget about it. Then, when I open it, I'll see 12 other chests over the hill and almost forget about the original chest. In Sumeru, I found this immersion being broken by areas that are blocked off completely, with no context behind them. While Genshin has blocked off areas for quests before, most of the areas prior were hidden so that players wouldn't naturally stumble into them. In Sumeru, so many areas were quest-locked that it was almost impossible not to encounter them while exploring. They were so abundant that it became distracting.

I agree with this so much. Sumeru looks great and has a lot of cool stuff in it but exploration is a nightmare. I cannot stand me hanics that force a specific element, I personally even include elemental shields on enemies for this since you can't freely swap in battle for example and Sumeru doubled down on it with so many random overworkd things requiring specific elements. Also there are 2-3 domains that pissed me off because they require a bow but there is nothing telling you that before you enter, so if you didn't have a bow character, you could get like halfway through and then be stick and have to exit and do the whole thing over. The desert was the worst offender for me, evwrything looks very similar, even with the map that actually shows different layers finally, it's still a confusing nightare of corridors and things blocked by the slate. The amount of times I had to leave aomething, would mark the map and then try ro find it again later and couldn't figure out how I got there.

I seriously don't understand how someone can defend the Aranara questline or the amount of gatekeeping present in the desert. First, you have to help Aranara "heal" the forest and, in the process, unlock old and new Vanarana (something you can't do until you engage in the questline, something no other region does). This process unironically takes 10h to do. Yes, it gives a lot of primos, but those primos could've been scattered across puzzles (seriously dude, 90% of the chests in Sumeru are common). Then, you have to engage with Aranyaka. This involves going to nurseries which have time-gating, finding random chests hidden in the middle of nowhere by looking at poorly-drawn pictures for reference and exploring some more. After you do all of this, you then have to find 76 Aranara accross all of Sumeru to be able to open 15 or so chests of all rarities in a cave. You think this is bad enough? Well, the very last Aranara you have to find is LOCKED BEHIND A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD QUEST that requires you to kill the ruin machines locked behind dendro prisons. I was kinda ok with the initial quest where we were clearing the withering and doing other stuff, but the Aranyaka stuff and the 76 Aranara made me lose my sanity. I unironically now love desert more than the forest. Speaking of the desert, I don't mind it now in the modern era of underground maps, but I despised it so SO much when we didn't. I refused to explore it before we got the underground maps, barely having above 50% on all of them (especially desert of Hadrameveth).

It was actually locked behind the normal Vanarana, which is in the first hour or so of the quest. Old Vanarana wasn't required for any events. But yes, that was one of the only if not the only time HYV had a world quest as a prerequisite to an event and that couldn't be "quick started" because it was required due to locking exploration. Going off the poking fun at not considering events as actual content thing (which I know isn't the point of the video but w/e), this is probably the thing that always bothers me the most in terms of complaints about the game. I'm a Day 1 Player who, besides a roughly one month break after Tears of the Kingdom came out, has logged in every day. There is SO MUCH permeant content in the game that I haven't yet despite this. The only ways I can reasonably make sense of it is people who basically have unlimited free time, and/or it's the only game they play. It blows my mind... After Sumeru Fontaine felt like sip of fresh water *pun intended * I really hate Sumeru, specifically because i had to do it 3 times! (i have 3 accounts, don't ask why) And only on my third time i was able to get all 76 aranaras without double-triple-checking them again and again, because those little bitches camouflage themselves with the grass, it's annoying. Oh, and some people say that puzzles in Sumeru were easy. Well, they kinda were, unless you come across one specific flooded cave under another flooded cave where you need to do a tedious quest of finding and killing 16 ruin mechanisms that scattered around whole green zone map in the most ridiculous places sometimes. And if you still have water in that second cave better checking rain switcher in the Apam (?) forest that located miles away from that cave, because SOMEHOW they're connected, and you should've been able to deduct their connection SOMEHOW too, i dunno.... God bless the portable way points... And as for the desert... I hate backtracking. And also there was no underground map when i did it first time, so yeah.... Who am i? Where am i? What the hell is going on? And btw, nowadays you can collect all the "Authority" or whatever that power was for the Plate easily (not really), but back in 4.1 you had to wait for 4.2 so the second part of the desert would drop and you finally could collect the last bits of power you need to open that last door in the tomb.....so if you're stupid, like me, you would aimlessly run around searching for the last power you need, and after few hours you'd finally check the mighty thing called internet and learn that you need to wait for 20-30 more days. Duh. You also had to finish first Jeht quest, then randomly teleport to Aaru on the second day so you could trigger Soheil quest (or whatever the guy's name, if you already explored everything because you were stupid like me and did not teleported to Aaru via Statue of the Seven teleport, you can basically finish his quest right there, but it's still needed for last page to appear), collect all the available power then start the second Jeht quest so you could get more easier way to the place you need and read 6-7 random pages that will give you last portion of Plate power. I mean, all this time we were getting that power through some tomb puzzles and now it's suddenly a paper reading? Who designed that shit??? And btw to collect everything in King Deshret Tomb you will have to return there 4 times! 4!! 5 or 6 if you're stupid. Gosh i hate backtracking, really. Btw [2] i think that the guy who designed Meropide Prison in Fontaine is the same guy who designed the King Deshret Tomb. I fucking recognize his hand! Was he not fired yet?? Stop adding bullshit layouts to the game pls that don't make any sense! Jeez....

@@Indian_gae_boii even if i had 1 account it won't be fun. Because when i did all of it first time i already got burned out quickly. I didn't explored it back to back too. On first account i explored everything on the date of release, on second account - a year later when Fontaine dropped. And on third account i do it know but with maximum laziness as possible, so probably it'll be finished only when Natlan will drop. And in example i didn't have such problems with Mond, Liyue, Inazuma or Fontaine. It was actually fun to explore those three times. But Sumeru is tooooo~ suffocating.

I’m honestly surprised the stretch of 3.4-3.7 didn’t take me out of the game. It was literally horrifying to be a Genshin player during that time. I really liked the Lore, but I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the amount of content they gave you and I was playing the game everyday (reckon, that was on me because I was grinding my ass off trying to get to AR 60). All of my friends despised the Aranara quest-line, but I actually liked it. It gave me a sense of nostalgia and somewhat a Zelda vibe to it, and I was actually invested in helping out those “fairy fuckers” (shout to my friend who called them that lol). Now, I didn’t finish the book but I did finish the most important ones. Now for the desert…I couldn’t say the same when it first came out. I did come back to it during late 2023 and I actually enjoyed exploring it, but man I did not enjoy those caves and puzzles at all. However, I will come back to 100% it one day like I did with the Rainforest after I took like a year break from it. As for the events…yea I wasn’t a big fan of them. Most, maybe all of them were really boring and not fun at all. I swear, there were like at least 2-3 events I liked which sucked since I used to like nearly every Genshin event at the time. Archon and World Quests were really good, my nitpicks are pretty minor and the only criticism I had was the length of them. It’s the first region where I felt that Genshin was truly getting serious and they weren’t as much “cheery and unserious” moments like there are in the past. We actually got more information on the world of Teyvat and our main characters for once that didn’t include “Dainsleif” in it. Not to mention that depressing scene with the Greater and Lesser Lord. Overall, I loved Sumeru but I felt that the “content” people asked for more of honestly ended up backfiring and killed many enjoyment of players. Not to mention the time Hoyoverse publicly announced that Endgame content wasn’t coming anytime soon. However, Fontaine seemed to revive a lot of excitement and enjoyment for many people including myself

See. I got burnt out from Sumeru, but it was because I had other games with events I wanted to do. And with the region being released in faster patches, I just opted to *not* do it all at once. Like I did most of the final desert region because I had more time around then. I haven't finished Tsurumi island. I haven't finished a lot of things friends go "you haven't done that yet?" But at the same time, I thoroughly enjoy the content once I get back to it. I'm definitely distracted by the new stuff at release, but I'd say my biggest obstacle is just trying to do Star Rail as well. That eats up more of my exploration time. But when actually doing Sumeru? It's a blast. It helps to actually do stuff at once when the tutorials are near the top, sure, but those "character/element" locked stuff? The backtracking? That's all (traditonal) Zelda designed philosophy, which I already know the mainstream doesn't care for, but I love. Most of those issues are non-existant if you just play with Collei (I had Tighnari myself). It's why I've been going back for town reputation, and Navia and Wrio make it easy to deal with fungi reactions for farming. Long quests? Aside from ignoring Rana at first because I didn't realize it would keep going and I wanted to do the archon quest, I enjoy the fact content gets to keep going. Inazuma had some fun but very hidden quests. Sumeru's issue is just throwing too many new terms at you at once and the knock off koroks speak in more broken speech as it is. I've been enjoying Fontaine as well, but it definitely feels much simpler on the brain than what potential it has mechanically.

Honestly i thought i was the only one with low sumeru exploration (i literally have barely 30% on average for that region lol) i basically did all the necessary quests and moved on. Often times i felt so claustrophobic in the areas, especially the desert, i remember thinking that i can find a way out of them through a gap, but that gap is literally blocked by that invincible wall which you can only see when you get up close. The desert felt too overwhelming the more they released it, the forest region was somewhat fun because everything was new around you, but the desert was literally just sand, more sand, caves, ruins and it made it difficult to explore. I literally got multiple headaches, felt nauseous because of this region, got motion sick and i barely only completed the required quests, and then i quit for 6 months because i had enough of this game lmao, and recently got back because of fontaine. Im so glad im not alone in finding sumeru annoying and hard to explore, all that terrain, caves, puzzles (they're not even that hard but they're so annoying), claustrophobic environments literally made it hard to play. And especially the slanted ruin guard quest? i actually genuinely threw up because the angle made me feel so sick. Edit: just wanna clarify that i only hate the exploration part of sumeru because its hella annoying, the story quests are amazing though.

It's funny that the first thing I do in every new region is start playing world quests and I explore at the same time, so half of these problems I never faced lol ^ ^ it might be frustrating a lot but Sumeru exploration experience was very solid I enjoy it a lot and ironically my favorite area in the game when it comes to exploration is the third part of the desert I loved the mechanics there and my least enjoyable area is the second part of the desert, but my favorite world quest of all time is from there so I have mixed feelings about it My first region to 100% fully was Sumeru, yes the exploration was tough sometimes, but I enjoyed it the most for some reason, maybe because I enjoy playing world quests and the lore behind it, I think that the main reason :)

I love Sumeru and imo I consider exploring the rain forest area some of the best in the game, but I feel like thats mostly because of the environment and music and maybe not the puzzles/feeling of exploration in itself. More than anything the part that frustrated me about exploring Sumeru was what you mentioned about having to use so many different elements and weapon types. I constantly had to switch my party just to get like, a common chest and 2 primogems. Compared to that its incredible how much more fluid fontaine feels, even though i still enjoy the aesthetics of sumeru more

I didn't start playing Genshin until right before Fontaine, so by the time I got to Sumeru, everything was unlocked. The size of it alone is almost as big as the prior three regions combined and, yet, when you really break down the content in it, it's no different than any one of those regions. A region far larger than the others without having much more to do is pretty bloated design. I got there really excited only to pray for it to end before I even reached the desert half. It was the first region where I didn't bother trying to get all the regional 'Oculus' until later. I don't tend to mind when some things in a region are locked behind quest chains... but in Sumeru, almost all of the interesting things are locked behind the Aranara or Jeht quests and both those quest chains are long and bloated to hell. My style of playing is to go exploring on my own, get all of the waypoints/statues, and clear every 'Oculus' I come across before touching the quests. Even in Inazuma, where things like the furnace or Tsurumi are locked, there is a lot to do and explore, giving those locked areas a sense of mystery without removing the interest in the islands as a whole. I even went through a lot of those lightning-covered islands before ever knowing there were quests to clear the storms... and it was fun. But, in Sumeru, it seems that any time I would take a step off the road, something would stop me from going anywhere, whether it be a locked temple in the desert of root covered cave in the forest. So, I got into the Aranara quest line and couldn't do it all at once. Every step forward was interrupted by another side objective that made all my progress feel pointless. So I backed out and went to do the Archon questline, not realizing that the Aranara quests were the ones that would unlock the blocked content. And, I got through the stupid Subzeru questline which made me start to dislike the Archon quests as well. At some point I just looked back and thought, "why am I even bothering?". I was at the point where a lot of the content people taked about being really fun was unavailable to me because it was time-locked to periods I wasn't playing. I had little to no chance to get the interesting characters from other regions because the banner system means you only get limited times to ever see your favorite 5-Star. And, the banners that were active around that period were of characters I knew nothing about (Lyney) or openly disliked because of how bad Sumeru was (Cyno).

Im like 90 percent sure that one of my desert quests (the secret of Al Ahmar I think) is broken because one of the light things you need to follow just isn't there for me. I looked everywhere just in case I somehow followed it a little on accident but I still cant find it, so that quest is forever unfinished lmfao.

I 100% explored the whole region before 4.0, which means that the multi-layered map wasn't added yet, so imagine how fun the desert was...

I agree, once Sumeru came out I did the archon quest and didn't do anything else. Sumeru was just so big and overwhelming for me so i quit for a bit, but once Fontaine came out my love for genshin came back

I'm a completionist and at this moment I have literally completed the game, as can be completed through gameplay means. I have every single achievement in the game that you can get through those means (therefore excluding achievements from chance daily commissions). I have procrastinated completing the Sumeru Region for a year. ... In conclusion, I agree. Well put.

Sumeru was fun to explore but I wouldn't dare to do it again. Especially the deserts.

which sucks because i was so excited for sumeru and it's so pretty, but going there makes me overwhelmed. it will take a loooong time before i have the patience to get 100% there 😭
