If you’re new to my channel, welcome! This was my very first video, as you can probably tell. 😂 I wanted Sofrito to be first because it is the foundation to great Puerto Rican cooking! I do have a video on how to make a more simple Sofrito recipe if ‘ají dulce’ or ‘culantro’ aren’t accesible! ♥️ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-khZn0OydLGE.html
@Daisy-world I would say add as you go along and always taste your food. If you feel it needs more salt, pepper add more. If you’re referring to the sofrito itself. I would cut each cube in half and add a half of the sofrito cube first. Than taste as you go along. If it still needs more flavour add the rest of the sofrito cube. Hope this helps.🙂❤️
Wow, my husband bout to loooove me 🥰 he’s PR and I don’t cook much because he does most of the cooking. But you are inspiring me to give it a go. Thank you! 🫶🏽
When I lived in New York and Pennsylvania, I was able to find all the ingredients for my Sofrito but now I’m living here in Fort Myers Florida. I can’t find some of the items I’m thinking maybe I should start growing them. Thanks for sharing.🙏🏽
I just happened upon you yesterday. Making your roasted chicken thighs tonight. Watching this video made me cry. This is how my Dad and my Titi’s taught me to make sofrito. They are all in heaven now. I keep them alive through their recipes. What’s funny is, even though I’m in Central Florida I can’t find Aji Dulces that are not full of mold. I’ve been to every ethic market. And it’s not the same without those peppers. Thank you for inspiring me and bringing what feels like family to me on YT.
@@mariscookingpr oh Wow! You are welcome. Family is such a gift. My Dad was from PR and my Mom Blond hair, blue eyed from Pennsylvania. So I don’t look PR at all even though I favor my Father. But I can cook the food. I’m so thankful my Dad and my Aunt’s too the time with me to teach me because I’m passing this love of my heritage to my children. Your channel is so simple and authentic. It feels like home.
Wow Mari, thank you so much for sharing your step by step sofrito recipe. New subscriber here. I love all your recipes. Stay well and God bless you always.
The vinegar also neutralizes pesticides.....I clean the same, but I also add baking soda, which reacts with the vinegar to give an extra cleaning "punch". I just came across your vids...THANKS for the content!!
Im snapping all these recipes n print them for when i d3 ide to make one of your dishes. God bless you. Subscribed today n this is my 3rd video i watched.😊
Subscribed 🙏 These videos are incredible, my family is from Bayamon and I wanted to cook a Puerto Rican meal for my fiance tonight. Thank you for saving me 🤣🇵🇷
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I love your recipes. I live in SoCalif where we have mostly Mexican food which is fine, but I miss the PR rice and beans and peas. So I am stocking up on all the seasonings you recommended. I will comment on how the meals turn out. Thanks!
So helpful thank you! I havent had PR food much but would like to try it so this is v helpful. Ill definitely be making way less haha but seems easy enough to scale down
I learned how to make Jamaican green seasoning & now I know how to make Sofrito. I freeze my Jamaican green seasoning just like this. I'm excited to make Sofrito. Do you add other seasonings to it or just as is? Thank you for this video & recipe
Hey, new subbie here! The ajise is def the worst to clean out lol. My Comai stores her sofrito like that too. I use the dollar tree cubes for it. I show it on my video if you’d like to know what I’m talking about 😊 Btw, my name is Marisol but Mari is what they call me 😉🙏🏼
Hi, Marisol - Thank you so much for subscribing! 🥰 I will be sure to check it out! I’ve had these plastic ice cube trays for years but silicone trays would be easier. 🧐 Lol
Mari, good afternoon! Great recipe! Where can I find ajies dulces? The ones that they have at Walmart and Publix do not look the same as the ones in your video.
The look will vary! Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know where to find them unless you live in an area with a high population of Puerto Ricans. 😣 However, if you have a green thumb, they do sell the seeds online and they’re pretty easy to grow!
❤ have you ever used “culantro” it looks sort of like dandelion leaves. Not cilantro - I did not misspell that. Two totally different things but it’s hard to find. My neighbor/friend is Puerto Rican and when she makes Sofrito she goes looking for it. She can’t always find it but here in Texas she gets it at fiesta market
Yes, this recipe includes culantro! It also goes by recao, and it definitely can be tricky to find in the States. I heard that Asian markets sell it, and it goes by “spiny coriander” or “sawtooth coriander”.
@@mariscookingpr 🙋♀️Thx! I wrote that before I watched the whole video. It popped into my head to make Puerto Rican beans because every time I go to visit I’ve moved away since she makes me that and that’s the magic ingredient. The Sofrito the stuff we buy in the grocery stores is not really the same and it’s always red. Hers was always green.
I actually found the seeds and the plants that are kind of pricey on Amazon to have them delivered and I just thought of that in the last few minutes I was going to surprise her with some of them that’s always the ingredient that’s hard to find
@@Starts_like_this Nice! I also want to grow them myself too. Have you looked for the seeds on Etsy? I’ve seen seeds for Caribbean Ají dulce on there! Yeah, the shelf-stable sofrito is not the same, but you can mix it with the green jar that is labeled, “recaito.” 🙏🏽
Hi! Yes, these mini, sweet Caribbean peppers are pretty hard to find if you live in the States! Luckily, I do have a basic Sofrito recipe with easy to find ingredients: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-khZn0OydLGE.htmlfeature=shared
Given that this recipe is given in a video format, providing a printable version would yield difficult. I suggest copying/pasting the ingredients provided in the description bow onto a Word document, followed by typing out the directions as you follow along to the video. More conveniently, I’m sure there is a printable version on a Puerto Rican website if you do a Google search. 😊
@@mariscookingpr Yes! A touch oregano is delishh!
Now that I moved to an area that’s not as diverse in population I can’t find my ingredients for Sofrito. I’m gonna have to use cilantro because I don’t find the culantro here. Also can’t find the small sweet peppers. Can I just use regular peppers? Thanks for sharing.🙏🏽😋
Hi! I totally understand your struggle! Check out my “basic sofrito” recipe! I’m positive you’ll be able to find everything! You can play around with what peppers you use too!
@@marirod70 I think your confusing authentic sofrito for Goya’s jarred “sofrito” that is tomato-based. Recaíto is just blended cilantro (spiny coriander).
Try a looking in a grocery store that’s known to sell Puerto Rican/Caribbean produce! If that’s not possible, you can make the sofrito without them, and substitute with extra bell peppers or cubanelle peppers. 😊
They are a Caribbean mini sweet pepper with a unique taste. They’re hard to find unless you go to a grocer that carries Caribbean produce. You can sub for green bell peppers. 🙏🏽
Of course! I will never shame anyone for using it. The frozen Goya sofrito is good, but if you use the jarred Sofrito, be sure to get the tomato-based sofrito as well as the green “recaito” sofrito. Use a combination of the two in equal parts.
@@mariscookingpr ty. For some reason I can't get it on my cell phone, but was able to get on tv. I appreciate your reply and love your no nonsense videos!
Hi Fatima! Unfortunately, parsley will not work since cilantro is the essence of Sofrito. I suggest using less cilantro - like 1/2 - 1 bunch, and keep everything else the same. 🙏🏽 Also, keep in mind that cooking with traditional Sofrito will not cause the food to have a strong cilantro flavor.
Try being only one in ur area half spanish!we literally have 3 black ppl n ik them all!😂but we dont even have stores or restaurants for authentic food besides sushi n Chinese!
