Cool information! I’ve got a really nicely toned Silver Eagle that’s got rainbow effect all over it. Mine is like that from maybe 4-5 years of carry in my coin pocket and sometimes in my leather wallet. One of my sons wants to replicate the effect with an Australian year of the dragon coin I bought him when he was born. I’ll get a Manila envelope and have him set it on a shelf.

Yes, toning happens due to silver coins, especially ones found in old dansco albums, or ones stored in US mint canvas bags from yesterday year, reacting with the fabric and glue in these vesses. However, since no harsh chemicals are being used to create the toning in this video, only the environment, this should not be a problem, but try at your own risk.

@MYGOLDCOIN101 you're an idiot. Toning doesn't happen when silver sits in bank bags. And it actually will be a huge problem because graders and collectors can easily tell when a coin was artificially graded. So when you send in said coin to PCGS they can't grade it due to its altered state, dramatically decreasing value.

There are alot of people in the comments that dont know what they are talking about. Coins tone based on the conditions of how they are stored. Alot of morgan dollars were left in bags and began toning in them, there were also alot in envelopes and boxes etc. When it happened it was all by mistake and alot of people didnt like it. Alot of Peace dollars were not stored this way which helped prevent toning since it wasnt popular. All of this is to say that this method is natural. Simply doing it on purpose because were learned from the past doesnt make it unnatural. Furthermore NGC and PCGS WILL straight grade coins that are toned like this and that is whats important. Dont believe me?, try it.

In the grand scheme of things, this method works best for common dates, because some collectors may want scarce date untoned, but brown paper bages will work, manila envelopes, and old cardboard coun albums, will tones coins. In my video, I accidentally grabbed a bubble nailer, but you want the paper to make contact with the coin to get the toning effect. This is how other certified coins, from back in the day became toned, the naturally lowOH level of the paper reacted and protects the surface by creating tarnish, known as toning. Hope that helps

yes, as long as the paper is NOT acid free, it will cause the coin to react, heat will accelerate the process, but do not use artificial heat, natural is the way to go. If not sure about the process, a plain manila envelope will work well. PS, don't wrap too tightly, you do want some ventilation and you don't want to scuff the coin's high point, plus a looser wrap will make getting coin out later, a safer task.

@MYGOLDCOIN101
@MYGOLDCOIN101 3 года назад
Hey, I'm glad you found this video useful. to answer your question, it depends on the humidity, temperature and external forces on the coin, like movement to the piece and the paper one uses. you can buy the manila envelopes at any Walmart, or office supply store, make sure they (are not) acid free or this will not work. the average amount of time it too for my Morgan silver dollars was 11 months for the one with the bulls eye toning, and about 9-10 months for the super colorful one. the warmer the environment, the faster the changes. Also exposing the envelope to sunlight can have an accelerative effect of the chemical changes on your coin, which means you will have to check in on it more often, like every 3 months or so. Start with common dates first that have good luster, they will turn out the best and offer the least risk and the most reward. Selling, getting your coin professionally certified can help with getting the most value out of the coin, just FYI. I hope you have a nice week and tell your Dad I wish Him a Happy Father's Day :)

OHHH! I love this video! But I have questions! #1... what effect would you get with different colored paper? Maybe construction paper that's red or blue, ext #2... Will this work with more modern clad coins? Uncirculated lower mint 2012 quarters?
@MYGOLDCOIN101
@MYGOLDCOIN101 2 года назад
Hi there Melissa,bthats a very good question. I have fortunately had the opportunity to find coins like this in different colored types of paper. The key thing to tenenver is, a coin will tone over time if exposed to the air, but to acheive those popping colors, a non acid free paper must be used. the color of the paper should not make a large difference as long as is dose not say acid free paper, otherwise you will get no toning. As a collector for over 20 years, it has been noted that the manila envelopes provide the best outcome, mostly due to.the paoer being durable enought to house the coin, yet gentle enought to not scratch the coins surface. Modern coins? The great news is, yes! Some, if not all modern US coins can experience a degree of toning, test out which coin give you the best results and have fun. PS. When housing a coin, after the toning processes, use a holder that is is PVC free, if it does not say this, don't buy it or use it, its the wirst for a couns surface and the chemicaks will leech on to the couns surface and permanently danage it.

I should give it a try, I'm curious to see what they say myself. I have a few other coins that are toned, not by me and as far as I know, they are natural, but natural could be applied to many things, and when does something no longer rate as natural? A tarnished silver cup that is stored in an airtight case, vs on left out in the air, are the results each receives still natural or is it more truly based on how each is stored that provides validation for the condition of each. Good point you brought up.

Hi! I have a toned coin but the sides are still a brown copper color. Are naturally toned coins also toned on the sides?
@MYGOLDCOIN101
@MYGOLDCOIN101 2 года назад
Hi there, geat question, yes, coins can and do often tone on their sides as well as the rims, obverses and reverses, any place air can reach the coin and react with it's surface. The reason coins in sealed holders seem to never change it just that, not air flow, which can significantly preserve the condition of the coin for several year if not decades or even longer. You may notice that on copper coin, the first areas to change color are the edges, or the rims of the coin. They will experience some of the most exposure to air, contaminates, and human contact. They will slowly change from a broght copper orange to a red, then to a brown orange, then a light brown colors, then wventualy turn a dark brown. This is the way copper oxidizes and produces a patina which protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. Older copper pennies are a good example of this, pre-1982 circa. any us penny after that dat will be made from 99% zinc wirh a thin layer of copper leaf all over the coin. These later dates tend to not fair as well as their older counterparts and can sometimes be foundco.pmetely rusted through with little protection from such a thin layer of copper. Hope this helped.😸

Hey there, in warmer climates, the toning will get darker, faster. Like a fine wine, the longer it ages, the better it will be. I typically let mine tone for 3-6 months, then, with clean hands, check on the coins progress. Once the checking is finished, I place it back in the exact spot it was before in the envelope. PS. Hey there, the amount of time varies on temperature, humidity, and the size of the coin, Larger silver coins like Morgan Dollars can start seeing light chages onnthe rims in as little as 3 months while smaller coins can show light toning progression as little as 6 weeks on average. Higher temperatures can yeuld faster results, but the trick is to leave the coin along once toning has set in, less interupt the process and possible prolong the process. if you do become impatient after 6 minths to a year, one can wear vinal gloves and carefully inspecet the coin for a short while, but only if the coin is placed back in the exact spot in the envelope to continue the chemical reaction.

@kobewoods5525 Well, to me personally, if it is intentionally done to produce a certain outcome, then it is unnatural. Natural toning, imo is when it happens over time and isn't planned. It doesn't have much to do with the way the toning came about but more about time and circumstances. Like coins that have had extended time in bank bags, and a few of them out of a hundred happened to get toned for whatever reason. Sounds like most people dont care one way or the other, maybe maybe thats a purist way of looking at it, while most people are fine with it either way.🤷‍♂️ im still new to all of this, so im def not the authority or even educated heavily on this stuff.

As exciting as i was to watch it, it also broke my heart. I can see kids dumping hand fulls of coins into the machine and walking away to play videogames. No more people sitting down looking through magnifying glasses and finding joy and fulfilment. When you take skill and patience away from anything, it quickly losses value.

Why you would want to show someone how to scam coin collectors is beyond me.

The toning is occurring naturally. There is no scam to it. If he was using sulfur and/or other chemicals to tone them, it would be entirely different. What he does is the same thing other toned coins go through. The sulfur in the manilla paper is what causes the oxidation on the silver. Same as the sulfur in the old coin folders and flips that's 99.9% of toned coins come from.

If you do this and sell as toned to someone YOU ARE SCAMMING THEM. Manmade toning is completely different than natural, and a grader will deem these as fraudulent toning. If someone sends it off they’re gonna be very very angry if they pay to get it graded and then it’s deemed fraudulent

These tone like any other naturally toned coins found in an old coin albums, time and reacting to their suroundings. The coins derived from the older albums, have produced some of the most beautifully tones coins on the market. If you don't own an old school coon album, the manila envelopes are similar in paper chemistry and produce similar results.

It's not manmade toning. No difference in this technique and finding some beautiful toned coins in a mint roll that has been untouched for a long time. Coins wrapped in paper... same deal.

Cool information but it is a little bit sheisty, that you sort of just grade the coins yourself and then write that number on the coin holder as if it were done by someone professional. Also writing things like cameo on the coin when not verified by professional seems misleading too. I understand if this is just for your own personal collection, I sure hope if you were selling these items that you wouldn’t have those words written on the coin which could potentially mislead your customers. I would leave those MS ratings and special terms for the people grading the coins. That’s what they were intended for. Common folk should be using terms like a AU/BU ,until graded it’s just a BU coin.

Artificially toned coins are not cool.Its fraud.lt is not right.
@MYGOLDCOIN101
@MYGOLDCOIN101 2 года назад
Artificial toning is usually procured by adding chemicals directly to the coins surface or by changing the metal's temperature to alter the coin's appearance in a short period of time, leaving the coin to look washed out and flat. Manila envelopes, old coin albums, and US canvas mint bags induce natural toning, as the coins react with the materials in their natural environment. take silver that is left out in the air for months, it will eventually begin to tone, or tarnish without external means, but it usually looks unattractive. Placing a coin in a controlled environment, bids the best possible outcome when allowing a coin to tone.

I would not suggest anybody do this to their numismatic valued coins! You're destroying history! These coin grading services will know the difference between artificial toning or intentional toning and natural toning and you're actually lowering the value of your coins. If you have to do this do it to bullion pieces where the value would not be affected.
@lazyboylarry4345

Yeah it looks cool and pretty but you're actually destroying the value and if you took that coin and had it graded you get it back after wasting your money as artificial toning and it would be actually worth less it has to be what they call artificial and this is where it gets kind of weird because there's no such thing as artificial I guess they mean naturally.

From what I was able to gather from PCGS grading practices is, if a coin looks suspicious, they tend to mark it as artificially toned, even when it is not, and vise verse. About every 5-7 years, they're grading standards go in flux, going from super lax, to super script and back again. If you look out for the 1st generation PCGS coins, you can find an undegraded gem, even the years after can provided deeply undegraded coins, I have one of them myself.

If you think you're destroying the value of the coin, dip it in Ezest. That product will take off the toning and grading companies will not consider it a cleaned coin.
