Just some technical information. Most polar patterns happen at the capsules themselves, not electronically. In the U87 you mentioned, there are two cardioid capsules back to back, they are summed in the amplifier, so in fact that is not as "true" an omni pattern as a single element mic such as a pressure gradient omni capsule, like an Earthworks to give one example. The U87 will still have proximity effect, since it is two cardioid capsules summed together. The pressure mic will have no proximity effect since it is a "true" omni. I like the video makes me want to try recording in omni more often.
Love your channel and your dedication. I've been working hard so that I can finally submit some songs to listings. Unfortunately my new environment picks ups everything outside! (Small studio workspace, air-conditioning, water sounds from my aquarium and both bedroom doors are sliding glass!). Trying to get by with an Audio Technica AT2020 USB mic. I bought it after much research only to learn that I should have avoided USB. Also have a Shure 57 but I don't play an instrument (at least not good enough to record). I bought that after being advised by the guy at SAM ASH! UGHH! Your stories inspire me. Sometimes I cut off the A/C (in FLORIDA), shut off the aquarium filter and hide in the bathroom with comforter padding around the door to try and record a clean vocal. After several attempts and risk of heat stroke, I am little closer to a workable system. LOL
Great suggestions. So many people have poor experiences using Omni microphones in one situation, and they allow that to color their preferences for all situations. Personally, I love mixing in some U87 in Omni with a pair of small diaphragm condensers in cardioid when recording acoustic guitar. Playing with the relationship between the stereo pair and the mono Omni can get you some great results.
i would like to see it used as a front mic with a figure 8 for side mics in a mid side mic setup? hmmmmmmm mid/omni hahahahaaaaaaa may even open a dimensional portal.
Probably not, but TRY it, and see if it sounds better or worse. Good rule of thumb, don't dogmatically use techniques given on the Internet without TRYING them. 🙂
