I feel foolish for not even thinking paint masks exist. I always assumed there were just really skilled airbrush people working on assembly lines for toys. This is very cool!

I can relate. I got some funny looks from my fellow passengers on a train heading south through Portland OR about 20 years ago when I figured that out. I saw some Graffiti Artist at work a block or so from the tracks. They had cut some refrigerator boxes and other large shipping boxes into various shapes that several of them were using to make sharp lines and circles for things like eyes and planets(?) on the wall. Several industries ran through my head as I realized the ubiquity of masking dawned on me. I let out a loud "DUOI" as I smacked my forehead on the table in front of me. I got a mixed bag of looks from other people in the Observation Car I was in at the moment. 😅 The toy industry was one of the industries that went through my head during the epiphany. Others ranged from the Graffiti/Mural Industry to the Automotive Industry. I knew masking was a thing, but I never thought about its use like this beyond just logos on cars, for instance.

well some of them do airbrush and you can tell that the lines are sloppy. They use airbrush/normal brush were quantity and speed of production is more important.

Next year, people will have plenty of time to chat with him. Somethin' to look forward to for sure!

Great idea! If your models were sculpted digitally you could use the extract function in Zbrush to easily create a form-hugging paint mask and 3d print it, putting all the supports on the outside for a clean print.
@TheCrafsMan
@TheCrafsMan 13 дней назад
Snap, that would be SLICK! I've heard mention of 3D-printed masks but I'm curious about the *fit* because the pieces would come out not exactly the size printed. More of an issue with resin printers than FDM, I imagine. P.S. I've seen screen recordings of folks using Zbrush and it looks like the closest thing to digital clay that I've seen. (My 3D experience is a couple decades old. LOL!)

Sorry about that! Often times I don't "hear" it as much (I'm just getting the *words* across) and my wife will go "Why do you sound so SAD right there?" LOL. My bad y'all. There are times where what I said was ruined by the dehumidifier, so what you hear is me trying to run a high-pass on the "bad" audio to cut out my voice and keep the higher frequency handling noises... THEN I'll lay in a voice back over the top. Not my preferred way, but with the heat and humidity like it's been, I've had to do it repeatedly. I've got three different mics (four in this vid if you count the iPhone) also and the shotgun vs. the dynamic mic will make a difference too.

What about latex? You could apply it to the areas you don't want painted and make a few coats of it and once cured you make a last layer with plaster soaked paper to add rigidity. This is a method used to make big moulds but it will likely work well as it's pretty thin and flexible.
@TheCrafsMan

Most masks were and are made by electroforming metal over what your painting usually in two pieces but sometimes more think of how a mould is made than they would be soldered onto a metal clamp for a two part mask or you would just hold the item onto the mask and paint

There's a small town not too too far from us that had up until recently a Radio Shack. Although it was technically under a different business name, it had all the signage, and the complete setup in the back with all the electronics components. I was able to get all those antennas for about $1 each. But yeah mannn, I used to just about HAVE to go into a Radio Shack whenever we were somewhere that had one. Ive seen small run injection molded keychains from china that have several colors. Im wondering how their molds were made to achieve it. There is very fine detail... radiomaster keychains that come with their radios for example. Its not painted either. The colors are injected at different stages/sources or something
@TheCrafsMan
@TheCrafsMan 13 дней назад
Oh yeah, it's totally possible to inject different colors. Those injection molds are impressively complicated sometimes, with extra "action" and allowance within the mold mechanism for "insert molding" and "overmolding" (Overmolding is used in situations where you'd have like a rubber/grippy surface injected over a rigid surface, like in automobile handles and stuff. An insert molding example would be a metal screwdriver shaft that gets placed inside the mold and plastic injected around it. But the same can be done with multiple colors of plastic.)
