I removed all of the old headliner material, and what's left is a very thin (beds sheet) fiberglass backing. It's very flimsy, and looks like applying a new headliner is going to be impossible... Any advice? Thanks

Not worried about price but how do I get a custom fabric to work right with foam or can you give advice on foam
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery 7 месяцев назад
Hello Kenny, The easiest fabric would be headliner fabric which has the stretch and foam added already. You could use 1/8" - 1/4" foam. Make sure the fabric that you are using is not to thin as the glue will soak through. Be sure the fabric has a very good stretch. Please keep liking and watching!

Great video sir. For those people not in the business of repairing / restoring, seeing you do it by hand is very helpful and appreciated. But for those who might want to get into this line of work and don't have 40+ years experience, I would hope there's a tool or drill attachment that can help quicken the process. Thanks for making this and your other awesome videos.

That looks great Rudy! I’ve done hundreds of headliners over the last 31 years. And I’ve done it the same way you showed. Except I use a wheel wire brush on my drill to remove the old foam. Then I use a wire brush to clean it off smooth clean. It is messy. I’ve used the same glue and spray gun. I installed it back immediately in the vehicle after I’m done . To replace a headliner on a Jetta with Sun roof is very tedious. Thanks for the video and keep posting more. I enjoy watching!! Ed

Vehicle is a second gen Dodge ['94-'02] extended cab. Was that a 1996??? I believe that Dodge interior color was "Driftwood". Headliner fabric you used was Keyston #AC1971 "Dk Sand". It looks like a very light color to be named "Dark Sand". Did you redo the visors also ? Because they totally match the color!!! Did that color match the Dodge seats and doors?? Keyston also has a "Lt. Driftwood" color - I wonder about this color matching the Dodge Driftwood interior - have you used it?

I’m watching all your videos now in 2024, after my Dad’s passing in 2019. He was an upholsterer since 15 years old till his passing at age 66! He was truly a very cool guy his whole life, & an awesome tradesman. I never was able to learn the trade due to us living in different states, but he did gift me a cool old PFAFF about a year before he left us, & didn’t get too far along on my training. Now I’m going to really give it a shot to learn it, & this reminds me so much of Dad. Thanks for your instructional videos sir. God bless.

Thank you for such a good video. Much appreciated. Since I am in Denmark, and I want to do it myself on my old Land Rover, I've taken the headliner out of the car, and taken off the old material, plus the foam. The precious owner (I recently bought the car) used spray glue which of course did nothing good, and then staples. I could take off the foam and the staples with no problem, but the styropor (the firm plate) is super sticky. It's a bit like the spray glue kind of semi melted the top of the styropor surface a little bit, if that makes sense. Should I clean this stickyness off, before I spray new glue on with my spraygun, or not? And if I should remove the stickyness, what to use, so I avoid dissolving the styropor? Really could use an advice for this from a professional like you. Much appreciated. Kind regards, Redfox.

Is it REALLY important to use foam backed material? It seems like in 10 years the new material’s foam will just degrade and have to be done again, and again. Also I am seeing weld wood contact cement but NOT weldwood contact adhesive at my big box stores. I presume the “cement” version is totally wrong for a headliner? I DID find on Amazon weldwood contact adhesive landau and trim in a spray can, like all the other consumer adhesives-do you think that would work as well?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery 11 дней назад
Hello Buck, I can tell you that for 45 years, I have only used contact adhesive for everything. I do not have experience with cement or spray can, so I cannot recommend that. But there are still several VERY SLIGHTLY tacky places-mainly along the edges-that are not perfectly dry to the touch. I’ve used synthetic mineral spirits (can’t by traditional in my state) and goo gone on those places too but I can’t seem to get those areas completely clean. I have tried the brushing technique but I have been successful so far with the 3m. I am going import the weldwood, keep the videos coming excellent work always

Your videos are the best, Thank you so much. Not sure this will get seen or answered but just in case I’ve had a headliner question for a while and I’m not sure who better than you to answer it. On old chevys with the bow type headliners. Most people say to trim back the loops the bows run through until they “look right” during installation. There’s no way they were messing around with that on the assembly line when the car was built. I’ve actually been told by an old guy that worked at the factory, it was two guys on the line, and they spent about 5 minutes or less installing the headliner. So, are the aftermarket ones just not made like the originals, or do you really not need to do that, or maybe it just makes it a little better? What do you think?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery 2 месяца назад
Hello 78, You are so welcome! Thank you so much for saying so. Well, I think the fit depend on who the manufacture is. In 44 years, I have never installed a premade headliner myself. I have always made mine. What I do is trim back the listings at the bends of the bow. Perfect every time it's tried. Please keep liking and watching!

Can’t you take a wire wheel to that?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery 3 месяца назад
Hello Eugene, You could if you want to, but I have need doing this 44 years and I would say that I never would. The wire wheel will load up in seconds, and the fiberglass type headliner base like this one would be destroyed. If I had an easier way of scraping the foam, I would do it that way. Just sayin'. Hello Spider, I wouldn't do it. A wire wheel would destroy the soft fiberglass made headliners. Besides the wire wheel will be gummed up in seconds. Just not practical. I might have missed that part. I don’t think I did. But wouldn’t a sander make foam removal a million times easier? Obviously you want to make sure you don’t go too heavy in any one area but it just feels like it would have to be easier than scraping.
@oldschoolautoupholstery

Hello Brett, After doing this for 44 years, I wish there was a better way of doing it. A sander or wire wheel will clog in seconds with foam and sometimes syrupy sticky glue. So far it's working good enough to give me little extra time , a repair shop is not close in this area . believe I could do it now , just a little intimidating getting the thing out but actually its not that big & with a couple of saw horses believe I can handle it with right adhesive

I started driving in the 80s and everyone had to have a 70s Monte Carlo. I think they forgot to glue the headliners on those things. The good thing was every gas station around had headliner screw pins in all sorts of colors and shapes. The owner would put his headliner up but while driving around with a carload of idiots the artistic ones would make cool designs with all the pins. Bedazzling wasn't just for ugly sweaters. The main thing is to do like he said because the glue not only came loose on the material it lost the bond on the deteriorated foam too. I don't think I've seen a headliner newer than 85 but the foam turns to dust. The foam was the problem in the first place.
