What’s up everybody. In todays video, I will be showing you how I manually aligned the ignition switch assembly on my 2016 Street Glide Special.
PLEASE NOTE: Do this at your own risk. I am not a professional mechanic. I will not be responsible if you mess your own ignition up. I just like to tinker with stuff and figure it out.
Quick Story: I removed my ignition switch as I was working on upgrading my handlebars. I had the switch removed and not thinking I turned the wheel when replacing my bushings and locked the ignition while the switch was removed and caused an alignment issue with my ignition.
It was very simple and easy. I also bought a tool to help align the ignition drums but I wanted to show you how I did this manually in case you don’t have the tool.

Best video yet regarding the ignition switch. I have had such a hard time with replacing it every time I have done it. Never had the HB's moved on me after I removed the switch. No idea about the alignment in the switch! Thank you for sharing this! Perfect!

i just changed out the bars on my 2017 fltrx and did the same thing, i removed the ignition and and moved the bars and scrambled the inner tumblers. i simply took a flashlight and looked in the hole and stuck a screw driver in and could see when i clicked the tumblers into line it took probably 15 minutes of screwing with it and my switch dropped right in. i recommend trying that first, patience is key when doing this and i guarantee you'll get it.

Thanks for the video and the "how to" had to re align the ignition switch after not re installing the key cylinder and rod in correctly. Could not have done it with out your instructions

FYI, you can use a small flat blade screwdriver to get the security torx screws out. Small enough to get past the post and into the star points. :)

I just went through this in a parking lot. I was able to realign everything with a long screwdriver without removing the assembly from the bike but it took me about two fricken hours. Here is a tip for others. I found that when I went to unlock the Ignition after returning to the bike I was pushing downward on the switch causing it to rotate the tumbler just past the lock position and that would cause the key portion to pop off of the switch. I now know to just put he key in and turn the key toward off being careful not to push down on the key and that will not happen. Before I learned this I had this happen where the key portion would pop off but it did not come out of alignment. Just this last time did that happen. I bought a red alignment tool on line that I will keep in my saddlebag now and that should assure me that it won't happen again. I will also put in a tamper proof torx set like yours so in the worst case I can remove the whole assembly and take it apart like what you did. The tool I bought only cost me $11.00 so it is worth it to me. I feel confident I can align everything up using that tool should it happen again. This is a really crap for a design by H-D. There is no excuse for it IMO. This is causing unnecessary hardship for many owners. I wonder how many have had to have someone come out and help or have the bike towed to a dealer for this? In my case I could not even have it towed because the steering was locked. Thanks for this informative video!

Thank you I'm still trying to without pulling the complete ignition I'm going to try a few more times and then I think I'm going to do it your way. Bought like this previous owner messed it up

They make a little tool to help line it back up but if your ignition is already locked out and out of alinement, you may have to take it apart?

I've done this before checking this video , but very informative. Any idea why With switch off,neutral, oil and security lamp are on. Bike is centered on lift and key fob close but may need a new battery . I thought I'd ask before replacing the battery on the fob and getting bike all together

So I did everything you did and everything works as should but when I turn my knob to the lock (all the way to the right) the key pulls right out witch is how I ended up in this situation to being with and now the knob turns but it seems harder to turn then usual and help? Thanks

I’m not 100% sure. I’m not a mechanic I just “tinker” with thing until I figure it out. Was your wheel turned or was it straight when you reinstalled it?

Great video, thank you sir! One question, on my 2019 Streetglide special the bigger of the 2 springs was not installed. My Ignition is a little differnt in that the cover with the copper slider is transparent... Is it an upgrade or was it a factory mistake? Thanks, Dan
@DieselLegiance
@DieselLegiance Год назад
I assume an upgrade but it’s the same principles when aligning to my knowledge. Just get one of the ignition tools as that can sometimes make it easier.

I did the same thing on my road glide. The forks are currently locked and I don’t have the ignition alignment tool. When you removed the ignition did it unlock the forks? I am getting rid of mine all together with the new bar setup.
@DieselLegiance
@DieselLegiance 4 месяца назад
Yes when you remove the ignition lock, it does unlock the forks. Once you reset, the ignition lock you just have to be careful putting everything back together so that you don’t lock it out again.

Next time, and I may be wrong...think of the tool as a key, and each of those pieces with balls are each a lock, align each one with each other, from top to bottom - all 3 the same orientation

You said there’s the top, middle, and bottom parts. What is that bottom part called.
@DieselLegiance
@DieselLegiance 2 года назад
Not sure if the names I just know how to take it apart lol. The top part is where the key assembly slides into, the middle is the electronic part (white part) and the bottom is the metal drum.

@@DieselLegiance the bottom is the actual locking mechanism.
