I show you how to remove the ignition switch from your Harley-Davidson touring model. I then show you how to put it back on. At times, the Harley ignition can come out of alignment when removing the switch and the shaft won’t go back in or is stuck inside. I teach you how to completely remove the ignition from your Harley. Further, I show you how to take the entire ignition unit apart and fix the alignment problem. There’s no need to take your Harley to a mechanic for this and you can do it yourself. There is also a Harley ignition specialty tool that can help fix the issues and I'll show you how to use it.

INCREDIBLE INSTRUCTION VIDEO! I don't think I've ever seen such a thorough step by minor step instruction process so well produced. My ignition problems have been haunting me now for three agonizing years. HD wants hundreds just to 'diagnose it'. I've had it apart a couple times from the top only, now I know how to properly align it or even replace it if thats what's needed. Many thanks. Saved and recommended! And as a special bonus this just happens to be my exact bike, paint colors and all... lol. Loved it! Thanks.

Ryan, just want to say thank you. This happened to me at Americade a couple of years ago. I didn't know how to fix and had to take time to go to the shop. They never told me what they did. Yesterday, the ignition switch came out again. Not sure why, but I'm sure it was something I did. I ordered that little blue tool from Amazon and it got here in less than 24 hours. Played with it while watching this video again and I'm back in business. Thank you Bro!!

Ryan... Thanks for this video, very clearly explained step by step with good demonstration. This video saved me time and $. During a Handlebar install my switch got misaligned and had done exactly what the one in video had (pin dropped to low in the barrel). No shops open on Sunday and no alignment tool available, watched this video then followed step by step and it worked perfectly, now I can enjoy Sunday afternoon riding with my new bars on! Thanks for this video and all your great vids! Great content!!!

Mr Urlacher first off I want to Express my appreciation for your detailed tutorials. Couple days ago with reinstalling my new chrome lowers on my 15 ultra I misaligned my ignition.. Great video and thanks for helping me fix my bike. I changed out the bars on a 2016 Street-glide and somehow screwed up the ignition switch alignment. Back on the road now👍🏻

Just wanted to say how GREAT this video was. I'd done a TON of work on my bike before and messed up the ignition switch too many times. In the end I too had to buy the special tool (also got mine on Amazon). Before that I made my own tool by crushing some brass pipe from Home Depot and making my version. Worked ok and saved me a couple of times but in the end I just got the tool. But it was great to see you open the switch up and show how it works. Knowing that, actually helps when you have to remove the switch from the housing. Again, really great video, thank you.

Im beginning to have this problem where it locked on me last night and took about 30 minutes of turning the key/ignition before i could get back on the road. Now i see its really not that difficult to take apart and realign if i have to but before i attempt that ill buy the tool you showed. Thank you very much.

This video was a life saver. I tightened the handlebars then messed up the ignition alignment. It covered every detail. If I had tried it without your video, I know I would have lost at least 1 ball bearing and 2 springs. Likely I would have bought a whole new one once I had destroyed this one. Many thanks.

Great video. Probably already been said, but at 12:32, the wave washer goes on top of the silver cylinder, not between the electrical switch and black mechanical switch.

Excellent video. I came here to see how to remove that plastic piece to get to the handlebar bolts to adjust the bars down a bit without removing the fairing. I believe it can be done by just loosening the two bolts seen here in this video. Plus I now know how to fix the ignition switch should I ever need to. Thanks a bunch.

Ryan, this is one of your best instructional videos and it truly saved my butt tonight - I needed the bike tomorrow morning and I'd screwed up the alignment taking the ignition-rod out I had no idea how easily you could mess it up. If I could add one gotcha - some models have tamper-proof Torx screws so my simple T-10 wouldn't work. Keep up the great work - I'll become a patron very soon !

Ryan...THANK YOU!!! You just saved me a huge maintenance bill. I recently lost my job and can't afford to pay HD to move my new handlebars. My son-in-law helped me install them a few weeks back. So decided to see if I could move them back an inch on my own (son-in-law is out of state on vacation) and I took the lock off and didn't realize I had the forks locked. Trying to get the forks unlocked I had this ignition switch assembly all messed up and was nearly in tears when I realized it. I didn't know what to do to get the forks unlocked to finish disassembling things to move the handlebars. I saw this video and thought...well...I'll give it a shot and it worked. I was able to take the assembly out which unlocked the forks and finish the adjustment to the bars. Then I followed the alignment portion of the video to get it all back aligned. It was so clear and exact it made it simple for me. As a female rider I love my bike but I HATE working on it as I don't have a lot of confidence so I thought I was in serious trouble. I can't believe I actually got it all together and working. Thank you for this video and for all you do for us. I'm now an even bigger fan of your channel. :)

I upgraded my workhorse from a 2010 Road King Police to a 2016 Electra Glide (also police) and the reason the Electra was at the back of the headquarters... the switch. So with a little elbow grease and 20 minutes of time the bike was like new. Thanks for an extremely good tutorial.

Great video and put me on the path to a very easy tool free fix. I really did not want to open the ignition, but watching this video i know I can if I ever need too, but it was the tool recommendation that put me on the path. I order the tool then went back to my bike a noticed there really a difference in the tool and my ignition. So what you did with the tool to align, I just used the ignition to do the same thing. 45 seconds later … done!!! I still will keep the tool when it arrives, but I am good to go now.

This was very informative. Helped me out a bunch. I am updating my front suspension and had my ignition switch cover off and I accidently turned the bars to the left and it engaged the fork lock. With your help here I was able to see what the problem was. Thanks

Great video! Can you use the key to lock ignition without locking the forks on these? My 18 electra glide ultra classic doesn't have the key fob and I'd like to secure bike while parked for short stops without locking forks every time

Great video, thank you sir! One question, on my 2019 Streetglide special the bigger of the 2 springs was not installed. My Ignition is a little differnt in that the cover with the copper slider is transparent... Is it an upgrade or was it a factory mistake? Thanks, Dan

Help. Can't get the ignition switch out at all now. Totally out of alignment and just spins around but will not come out even with the key turned counter-clockwise and the button depressed. Three days later, the alignment tool shows up I am all aligned, the switch is back in and I am all set. I will forever be grateful for your video!

Ryan, Im going to install the harley speedometer and tac combo for my 2019 Road King. Directions indicate to disconnect the battery completely but doesnt mention the main fuse.. shouldn't the main fuse be the only thing I need to remove? Leaving the battery in tact? Hello Ryan. This video was amazing. I do have a follow up question. My ignition switch works just fine but when I removed it and then messed everything up I somehow have it where the barrel key lock locks when the bike is "ON" but not when it's in Fork Lock. Any ideas how to fix this? The ignition alignment is working just fine after I took it apart and reassembled according to your video. My issue is with the actual barrel key lock.

I’ve done my ignition already just like this but I wanted to ask you a question. When aligning the middle electrical part, does yours just spin left/right freely? After having everything aligned and put on the bike, when I put the switch in the ignition position it seems that I need to wiggle the switch slightly to get power. Just seems like I am not making perfect contact.

i have my 03 roadking fork lock jammed in the locked position. the cylinder key will insert but will not turn to unlock the handlebar. any fix suggestions on that?

I got a 2008 ultra classic and put a trike kit on it. now that I have changed the tree to an easy steer tree, I messed up the lower part of the ignition, so I bought a new one. when installed it is in accessory. so I ask, what procedure does one us to put a new ignition system in their motorcycle. I got the remove key part, what about the rest of it? I will check back, thanks.

Hey Ryan, I am a long time fan and was subscribed years back. I am again now. Question for you, my key turns from lock to unlock just fine. Unfortunately I cannot rotate the actual switch to the left or right. Any ideas on how to remove it in this situation? Can't turn to accessories, lock, or unlock. So I can't turn it counterclockwise to remove the regular way. I have done this many times before, even fabricated my own alignment tool. But that was in normal operating condition. As it is now, I am at a standstill .

Believe that electrical component toward the top is for the P & A circuit which turns on the accessories. Did you happen to grab the electrical switch part number? (meaning the component you plugged in) note: I looked on the schematic and the connector initiates the P & A relay coil which turns on the P & A circuit.

My bike locks and unlocks, but the switch wont turn from the off lock position...I was however putting it back on after tightening up my bars, so obviously i did somthing while trying to put it back on,,everything was put back on exactly correct. it was the way i moved it putting it back on...any ideas?? wont turn...

Brand New 2021 Road Glide Special. I’ve ridden the bike one time. Bike has 76 miles on it. Forks are locked and I can’t get the bike out of my 5x10 storage unit. My ignition switch spins all the way around, However I can’ crank the bike up. Help!
