It sure is! The one I prefer that I use in the video is from Kentmore. It's a factor Harley Davidson tool and I'd bet it cost north of $300. But I've probably used it over a couple hundred times myself + all the other technicians. It does a real good job.
Great video ! I was changing my gear oil and one single ball bering fell out in my hand , had some shavings on magnet. It was and still is shifting out decent .....Do I have a failing bearing , or maybe it got left in case from last rebuild ? 2010 street glide
Impacts get a bad rap imo. If you have proper fitting sockets and the correct power tools the forces applied to the head of the fasners will be surprise when you compare a loctited bolt being hand untreated threaded vs with an impact. It's in my experience that with the impact you have better control of keeping the socket perfectly square on the head of fastener and the way in that the impact delivers power unthreads, breaks the locktite quick and easily. Where as when doing it by hand your fighting the binding of the locktite and your constantly applying pressure with your ratchet then unloading against the head to ratchet, then loading with the next stroke. Where with the impact it my sound like many small blows but how it transfers to the socket & ware on the head of the fastener is less. I don't use small impacts because its a annoying sound and is just less effective. Imo.
Great video. Thanks for all the information. My Road King went down about a month ago right before spring weather and I have been trying to work on it since. I believe it's my transmission, It will not shift at all. All the shops are backed up so I'm on a waiting list. I decided I want to do it myself but do it right. I already checked my clutch plates so I think it's time to pull my tranny. I have never done this before so trying to watch as many videos as I can and research what I need to do.
I have a question again lol. I have the trans off the bike and i have the trans casing off as well. Is there anything i can do/use to hold it from spinning so i can get the sprocket off? Been trying for 4 days now 🤦🏾♂️
I've worn a leather glove and held the pulley before and used my milwaukee impact before. I have this one. amzn.to/4cBkKax. It has never NOT zipped that nut off. It didn't take alot of strength to hold the pulley, but it does have sharp edges.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard got cha, i have that exact Milwaukee tool and i will try that, thanks man i really appreciate you responding so quick and being helpful. It goes a long way 🤜🏾🤛🏻
Hey Brad, where do you work at, need to get my transmission checked, getting shavings on my transmission sensor a lot, changed the fluid, nothing in or on the plug, rinsed the transmission with some diesel, nothing came out, put it back together put fluid in it and checked it again today, 100 miles later, got shavings on the sensor again, what do you think,it’s a 2000 ultra classic, 35000 miles, runs great shifts great, no problems.
Brad, i have a2000 tc 88 and i need to replace gear set as you just pulled..my bike has a 240 kit, will i need to get a new main shaft or is rhe ine I have stock. Im not sure if it replaced when one does a 240 kit or uf it uses the same main shaft
If i wanted to replace both transmission side cover gasket and transmission door gasket, do I have to do everything you did on the primary side? obviously not completely strip it down but do i just take out clutch release bearing and tensioner?
That presentation is what keeps people honest. The job gets done right, and all parts get replace that need replacement.. and parts that don't need replacing....
I have a problem with my 2011 harley 48 1200 .What can it be when you go on to gear and the rpms are going but the bike is going slower than it should. Later as i keep changing gears slowly its starts picking up speed but sounds as if i was giving it more throtle. What can that be ?
My clutch cable does not return, i can pull it in and it stays in, i bought a new cable, then replaced my old cable thinking that was the issue but when i took off the side cover, i noticed the lever where the bottom of the shift cable attaches, it was locked over, i had to use a screwdriver to unstick it, now it moves but it still doesnt return the clutch cable to the starting position and therefore there is absolutely no tension on the clutch cable, even when i have the cable adjusted completed out. Im usually able to figure things out mechanically but this has me stumped. Please help... Anyone.... Was running great, its a s&s 113 was a 6 speed transmission and left side drive, has less than 1500 miles on the bike and shifted perfect before this.
Hi there.. i have a FLHTCSE 2006 with 5gears and reverse, can you tell me if to replacle the reverse gear for 6 gear i only need remove all parts of reverse and add only the 6gear in the gear box ..or it needs some kit for the replacement ., the reverse for a 6gear!!!txs
to do a 6 speed on you bike it requires a complete new gear set. The new 6 speed kit will reuse almost noting of your original 5 speed other than the transmission case, the 6 speed kits at normally longer then your Oem setup and if you were to add reverse to it it would stick out the right sided of the bike even further, likely causing the exhaust system to have clearance issues. Id recommend calling baker transmissions and they will likely set you up with a whole new gear set and reverse kit.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard hi txs once again ...my idea is only to remove the reverse and had 6gear ...so 6 gear and reverse is out of plan lol lol..so only option is to switch all by a 6gear kit ..i thought it would be possible to encrease only the 6gear and replace for reverse .....i am nooob kkkk by the way have you got some free files for h.d repair services???have a great day.
Great video thanks! That had a lot of good information. Looks like i will likely need to pull my transmission on my 17 Lowrider S. It makes a clucking sound in 2nd gear only when i am decelerating, the clunking sound is accompanied by a bounce or vibration that goes through shifter and linkage. This only happens in second gear and only happens when decelerating. The bike drives and shifts normal under acceleration. Seems kind of odd to me, maybe a worn dog ring or possibly a broken second gear? Will be draining the fluid this afternoon and taking a closer look.
The transmission side door bolts If I have the blacked out version of those particular bolts Will I be able to remove one at a time and replace without any negative things happening to that particular part area thank you
I had a buddy with 2016 Deluxe he was towing but it was rocking back and fourth in gear! Should have been in neutral. He had a problem but not sure where probably the first/second shift fork? Also that Damper spring seat in clutch can fall behind the clutch hub! Talk about Junk!
Oh wow, way to far for me to bring my harley. Tranny went out recently, just pulled the Tranny out today and ordered a new used one (it's a 95 heritage, 26 years old) hard to find parts for
That's not accurate information. Using a impact such as my electric milwaukee exerts almost no shock into the crankshaft as it his so hard and fast that the bolt has no option other then to unthread, Plus that's not how flywheels shift anyway.

My sportster 5spd 2006 trans got water fouled from flood... Is it possible to drain and salvage this somehow or should I be looking at a whole swap and if so do I need to divorce the case and "marry" a whole transmission w/ case to the bike if they are not unitary?
Using this video to pull my gears out of my 2010 RG. Very helpful! Could you do a video on changing a belt? I want to do that while I’m in here and not sure how to go about the rear tire. Thanks!
Do you have to remove the large nut on the drive belt pulley for the trans to be removed? I have to change the gasket on the clutch side but it isnt the clutch cover gasket its the trans gasket.. and cant afford to pay harley to change the one gasket.. ive dove into my primary and top end before but havent really touched base on the trans yet so want to make sure
You dont need to remove the large nut that holds on the front belt sprocket. Once u get the primary off and remove in inner primary bearing race off the main shaft the trans will slide out of the trans case. Dont forget you'll need to remover the trans top cover and pull the shifter lever of the shift drum. And remove the dipstick .
Sounds like a huge undertaking. Alot of precision parts to be made and alot of custom parts to be fitted and made. Anything can be made to work. All depends on if you have the will, desire and drive to make it happen!
In that situation I use a cut off wheel and grind a groove in the bearing race and place a large chisel in the groove and wack it with a hammer to crack the bearing race. I use a digital caliper to check the depth of cut so I dont cut into the main shaft like they do in this vid. Watch "Class #10 - How to Remove a Walked Inner Race Without Damaging the Mainshaft" on RU-vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ysPeettjWrU.html. I havent done there second method but I'm sure it works.
I have a 2008 fat bob. The mainshaft inner race and bearing exploded. The shaft has minimal damage. Can I replace it with a sealed bearing to avoid this problem again?
U can use a seal bearing, Baker makes one. I havent had good good experiences with the parker one tho. And the oem inner primary bearing + race usally lasts 40k miles. I'd recomend a new oem one personally.
Hi, Brad I would like to know if there is a follow up on the trans rebuild. I have a 09 super glide that needs some transmission work. I do all my own wrenching on it. I am just wondering if you shot a video of the rebuild process. I have been going over my manual on the rebuild for my cruise drive. I like your vids on the dyno process, pretty cool and I like your approach to the process. Keep up the great work! I subscribed, and will continue to support your good content. Thanks, John
Here’s the follow up vid where we complete this project ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--OoWVTNidQM.html . It doesn’t have information on the dissemble and resemble of the gear set but maybe info you’ll find useful. Good luck on your project and thanks for the complement.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard yea let me know if you can make a video rebuilding the transmission. Mine has 50000 miles and want to do all the bearings inside. I cant find any videos on this.
Dear Brad love the videos thank you for the entertainment. I have a question and need your advice. Do you ever had an issue with transmission noise when bike is on jiffy stand? Like dog rings try to engage only on jiffy stand if byke is up no noise.
Twice Ive had new bikes come in with missing the (lock ring 1/2 moon shaped things) and the gear set would make noise when the bike was leaned in one direction but not in the other. But its been very rare.
Hey man, awesome video. Excuse my ignorance but maybe you can give me some direction. I ride and 16 dyna and I’ve been having an clunk (chain skipping sound) issue during heavy acceleration in low gears. It only occurs for a second When under heavy throttle in first and sometimes second. If i ride the bike like a normal person i can’t hear any kind of slipping through any of the gears rolling through all 6. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance
In my experience the redline with shock proof is to slick. During dissembling bikes with redline shock proof you could see unusual ware patterns on bearings indicating "skating", rather than normal spinning. The redline used to be all the rage, but after a couple years in 6speeds we've found belray hypoid gear oil to be the best and that's what we recommend if people ask.
Through daily use I use 1 ratchet strap through the front wheel and wrap it around the wheel chock so the front wheel is positivity clamped to the hoist. For certain work I use a second ratchet strap through the front wheel and wrap it around the bottom of the hoist (super duper insurance the wheel wont come out of the wheel chock). And if the bikes on the hoist over night I leave a flat jack under the back of the frame just incase the tires go flat overnight. That keeps them stable.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard Basically I pulled the main shaft and bearing out the back of the case and it broke the lip that holds the main shaft bearing in place from the transmission side. Is the case still useable or do I need to get the ring welded back in the trans?
The main bearing is known to eat its self up. Good news is the new replacment u buy at a dealership will be an upgraded part. Assuming u have a 6speed.
The new updated version of the main drive gear bearing is a single roller bearing with much larger balls that allows debris to be washed out of the bearing during normal use. Where as your original deighn double roller bearing "holds onto" debris inside the bearing and it eats up the bearing over time.
The weld has broken connecting my gear select shaft to the race?.. If I've described correctly. I was told I will have to pull the transmission just as you've done here to fix this. Is this accurate? It looks as tho it could be accomplished from under the top plate? Where I've gotten an obvious visual on the problem. Thanks, Mitch
You can use a special Jims tool to remove the gear select shaft without removing the whole transmission but I wouldnt expect many shops to have one, here is a vid where I uses it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Eg5FPee7lio.html . It's a sweet tool tho. Makes it so you'd only have to remove the primary and you can leave the exhaust and transmission all intact. That is if you have a normal harley 6 speed. I dont know about tricks for any other models.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard believe it or not it was an hd dealership/garage senior mechanic that said it had to be torn down completely. Personally I didn't and wouldn't have questioned it if not for the visual. So w/ the tare down underway I wasn't expecting a standstill
Lol I fell asleep evidently hitting the send after the standstill part. But with a bunch of useless info I was just getting around to saying thanks, as I'm sure I speak for everyone, a far future included. Thanks for your time & sharing.
Hello again Brad. Things happen bro, ya know? in other words I'm now getting back-to-back to it. additional questioning and or thoughts never crossed my mind during initial question/convo. With some 80,000+ on this twin cam i found right away a fairly nasty clutch hub. picked up a new one as well as the Paw. So badly I want my bike back to it... TBT. There is little wear on compensator. I'm no expert but compared to CH we are talking like 20%. lots of YT videos on getting rid of these OEM parts for upgrades. Since money don't grow on trees, I would greatly appreciate your final opinion on it. And please anything else that I need to look for in completing. I dig your videos above all, to smooth to the point. so, if you say replace it. whatever it is, it will be done. fyi I haven't even disassembled the basket yet. I pretty much stopped after first question to you about it. Dude thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!! - Mitch
Hey there, I just had my transmission replaced and just got the bike back.. I'm afraid the tech may have done something wrong because I now have a whine that variates with the gear selected (louder the lower gear selected) My question is does the assembly 35246-10B come pre-assembled or does the tech have to put it all together? If so, this leaves room for error like mentioned here with the pressing.
The gear pack assembly (AKA 35246-10B) comes as a complete assembly, leaving just a couple bearings, front sprocket, main drive gear and primary bearings for a tech to install. Yes it reduces the chance for something to be installed incorrectly but who knows whats up with it intill it comes back apart. A good shop will take your concern seriously and rectify the situation if there is one. Sorry to hear its not going well.
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard Thank you very much for your reply, I literally was just told because I was on ESP, they couldn't just open it up again to check, basically ride until something goes wrong.. very disturbing..
@@Stoney-Lawson Ya, some shops play situations like that. In our shop if there's a situation similar to this the dealership pays me my labor to get in and figure it out. But that's totally dealer dependent. But on the bright side if you have ESP you can take it to another dealership and they'll take it apart and ESP will pay them again to fix it. I've had a few bikes come into my shop like that before. Hope it works out,
@@HarleyDavidsonWizard Thank you very much, can I ask you aboutmy issue? if so.. here it goes I have a whine from all gears when pulling inthe clutch, it's a small high pitched whine. it goes away completely in neutral, the noise gets higher the lower the gear you go, so 2nd is lounder than 3rd, and 1st is lounder than 2nd.. any insight or hints would be great, supposedly all bearings have been replaced, do es the trans have a break in period where it could be noisy? it sounds like gear mesh.
Ok. Its the inner primary bearing race tool your looking for, there are 2 different styles. They both do the same job. The one im using in the video is the newer style Kentmore "Harley Davidson corporate tool" part number HD-34902-C. The aftermarket still makes the original style tool, here is a link to one on amazon amzn.to/2xxC41E . I have both tools. The one in the video is a little faster but the original style amazon one works well if the race has walked up the shaft and there isn't enough clearance.
Yes. The gear sets are basically identical. The whole job actually uses the same tools, the primary's come apart the same ect. And the bearings and seals are all the same. Thanks for the view!
@@gary8399 you need the tool for the inner bearing race on the main shaft , there is a tool for the main trans bearing and there are installers for these as well. I used the removers with the installer tools to make it work. Also the big socket for the pulley nut.
Thanks! Us motorcycle mechanics typically have small stalls like a hairdresser. And as I was coming up through the ranks there gets to be jealousy in between mechanics especially when you're flat rate as far as who gets what kind of jobs. So I took the opportunity to be in the basement by myself and have a work area probably six times the size of my "main floor" stall. It works well as I do all the big projects, wrecks, engine/trans builds, custom projects ect. It also keeps me from getting distracted with curious customers and questions. I'm still getting used to the space. I spend so much time walking back and forth. Lol
