Looks like I need to invest in a 12 in. digital caliper. For right now the one sold by H.F. should be good.

Maybe stop teaching which pronouns you consider yourselves first.

Probably a good tool to have if you're going to measure a lot of drums OR don't worry about the tool and just buy new drums

How often do you normally replace the brake drums? At every brake shoes replacement, 2nd, 3rd? Any approximate pattern on this procedure? And what is the exact name of the micrometer you are using in the film? I looked online, but they looked a bit different. Thank you, great and informative film.

Brake life depends entirely on the driver, vehicle, weight, driving conditions. The best answer is when the drums have a defect such as glazing, they should be either machined or replaced. When the shoes are worn and need to be replaced, the industry standard is to either resurface (lathe) or replace the drums to give the new shoes a nice new surface to prolong life as well address any defects they may have such as out of round, lip, glazing, rust, uneven surfaces. How many times they can be resurfaced on a lathe depend on how much material is removed each time. The max diameter is the limit then they need to be replaced. The tool here is a drum brake digital caliper. Drum brake micrometers are a little different but common, although harder to read. Common to have original drum brakes as high as 100k miles.

@@paulkelley86 Thank you so much for your replay, especially for that approximate value of 100K mi, I thought that drums should be changed way more often, and couldn't find the information for that question anywhere. Thank you. Drum Calipers are quite expensive, but they are so exact and convenient. Please could you tell if you can balance the brake drum w/ simple Bubble Balancer (type of Harbour Fright)? In general is it a difficult procedure? I replaced the rear brakes on one car and didn't realized I needed to paint new drums I installed, they got very rusty after 3-4 months, but the previous drums are not so rusty. I think they are more expensive. I think to paint them and use for a while, but one of them has a missing weight (there is a clear mark, maybe at dealer they were installing shoes and lost it). Thank you again.

Is there a place where you can go and balance you drum professionally? Thank you.
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 2 года назад
@@olenaerhardt7725 balance? No, never seen anyone able to do that besides the factory that makes them. No market for it as far as I know, it would be cheaper to replace. Resurface on a lathe, any shop that has a lathe and someone qualified to use it. Very common. Call around.

@@paulkelley86 Thank you. Someone wrote in comments (in some film) or most likely on one forum that you can rebalance the drum by suspending it, or you can go to a shop and they'll rebalance for you. But resurfacing on lathe, will it balance the drum or it is just for the purposes of cleaning the surface of the drum? I thought it would be easy to attach a new drum weight w/JB Weld for aluminum, lets say.

They sell all the parts by the size of the drum brakes. OReily says an 11 inch will fit my car and also a 10 inch will fit my car. No way they can both fit.
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 2 года назад
What they mean is your model car came with both sizes as an option. Yours will only fit one of those two depending on which option it was ordered with.

that caliper will ride on the unworn ridges - its not a good method
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 2 года назад
The caliper is specific for drums, it has reliefs to accommodate the ridges assuming they are not gigantic. If you offer a superior method, go ahead and post the link to your video.
