Variations on this method: - keyboard shortcut win + shift + S to screenshot each slide/information block and your annotations - basic flashcard question with slide or several slides as answer - image occlusion with part of slide - cards where you have to draw a diagram as an answer - make flashcards during the year to save revision time, suspend them according to your needs - make flashcards from past papers - customise the steps in the options group to suit the time you have left and the difficulty (if i have 2 days i tend to use 30 mins, 3 hours, 1 day, but it really depends on how I'm doing on the cards and I switch it up even between decks using option groups).

Agreed. If you're not using the screenshot hotkeys for images, etc into Anki, I'd be as bold as to say you're not using Anki right. What's nice with image occlusion enhanced is you don't need to paste the image into the card. If you click the IOE Anki button, it automatically inserts your clipboarded image.

To make this even faster change the screenshot shortcut to only the PrtSc button if your keyboard has that button and your computer allows you to do it. This was a game changer to me it made it so much faster

@@where6043 as in one card for each information block (take a screenshot of the diagram/ part you want, not the whole slide). Do this if your lecturer likes to pile each slide with info, for most lectures 1 card/ slide is usually ok. For stuff like medicine with huge amounts of info on each slide you can separate it into bits

Re: Anki being unrealistic I've noticed that many studytubers who have success with this are those who able to watch recorded lectures in a flexible schedule with occasional in person practicals and tutorials. That way they are able to make Anki a priority that they consistently tackle for several hours every day. For those of us who often have 7 to 8 hours of compulsory lectures and labs per day and projects to keep up with, this is not feasible. Still watching the video but I'm sure this method is going to be a godsend since it's pretty much the conclusion I'd arrived to with my own revision 🤩

@KillerofGods

I work 6 days a week 60~ hours not including commute and I can do SRS everyday so far. Granted Im not a student, but I can do SRS during work breaks lunch, dinner, the time before a clock in, maybe a few minutes after work or 15 minutes after I get home. If I get a few minutes of free time, like waiting in a waiting room for an appointment or to fill up gas, I will knock out ten reviews. Spreading the reviews out throughout the day makes it a lot more manageable. However much I end up doing is what I do, if I have more free time and no reviews? Well I'll do some lessons. Not enough free time? I'll still try to do 5 lessons but if I can't I can't.

@@KillerofGods DAMN you're a beast, good on you man 👍👍👍 how many cards do you do per day? And how do you deal with the backlog? Tbh I like the idea of doing Anki, but the problem with it is that I would get so much backlog just from missing a few cards that it became depressing doing the same old 200 reviews and not managing to add enough new ones. Now I just use really long intervals and try to do cards from each topic equally when I can, but I definitely don't do them everyday and I liberally resuspend the ones I don't need anymore after the exams.

Active recall is much better than passive reading for sure! But in my experience, this method doesn't help retain info long term. If you grind out 3 weeks of cardio content like this and pass your exam, that's awesome. But if you need to retain the info for long term boards studying or just to know it in general if you plan to go into a field where cardio content is relevant, the important details you learn will certainly fade just a few months out, let alone a few years out. For anyone that is aiming to retain the information you're learning LONG-TERM - definitely do anki daily over time with cumulative reviews. After a year or two in the cycle, much of that detail is ingrained in your brain forever.
@ltl9728
@ltl9728 Год назад
@@Kevin-Cardosoo Spaced repetition software like anki makes you recall the information once every week, month, two months, until you keep getting it right. Learning with picture-association study tools is also really effective, like Sketchy. And doing cases and interactive questions can also help ingrain the lesson much deeper than reading it with little outside context

Second this. Anyone getting into medicine should not follow this advice. I’m not saying it’s bad, if you want to finish your undergrad and just need a way to get through exams to get you into the work force, then it’s perfect. But as a medical student, you will never stop studying! I repeat. You will never stop studying. You have to become a life-long learner and using Anki (correctly) is one of the tools that helps this process. Once you get your cards reviewed properly, you won’t see them for months if not years. Never delete your cards. You can suspend and unsuspend them when you need. People honestly just don’t know how to use anki properly. Anyway, this comes from a med student who is facing the mountainous load of studying ahead. Better log off and actually study.

yeah, agree with your single-day reviewing, even though the normal spaced repetition system is made like that to let you retain better without over saturate your brain with these too many repetitions and this should be the norm. But ok, let's normalize the single day technique because the majority of the students never have that amount of time to go through cards every single day, like Rachel does. Let's normalize also the fact of the majority of the students probably review things just 1-3 days before the exam, because they start late studying. So in these terms, the single-day system is a great solution.

I love Anki and I'm doing dentistry. It's tiring to make cards when you have so many lectures, great to do it with friends and split it. This is how I do it and I find it good too: 1. Watch lecture recordings/attend lectures to write down what the lecturer says. Super important for dentistry! 2. Do a basic anki card for eg. "Describe obturation" and screen clip the slide as the answer. I find this easier than image occlusion. 3. Use browse and then preview deck to study in order. I don't use easy, medium or hard because I find that it's very subjective. 4. Study 3-4 times before exam! Hope this helps anyone!

I do something similar in two different ways depending on how much time I have. I'll make it short but in summary Method 1 (my common method): After each lecture I group slides that correspond to Learning Objectives that my professor has because at my school you can expect 2 questions from each lecture's learning objectives) then I would image occlude or group specific slides together as an answer on Anki. So say the learning objective was "know the causes and treatments for gastric ulcers" The front of my Anki card would turn that learning objective into a question then on the back I screenshotted the slides that answer it then when I review I try my best to remember key info from those slides by going over them once by glossing them over and just having a mental conversation with myself -> "Okay, so an ulcer is a breakdown of the gastric walls because of too much acid and less protective mucous/base and we can treat it with Pepto Bismol and PPI because they counteract these effects" I try my best not to recite the slides word for word because that's not really learning I basically paraphrase the slides into a condensed easy to say version Method 2 (least common but it's a lot more organized): Instead of going straight to screenshotting my slides and going to Anki. I'll condense the PowerPoint because the professor put way too many stuff that I know won't be tested or "over explains stuff" (you know what I'm talking about, that one prof who takes 5-6 slides to explain one concept when it could have just been easily said on one slide or a few sentences) onto a Word document. This is where I again take the Learning Objectives as the headers on my Word document, but instead of screenshotting or re-typing everything that my prof said on the slide, I'm cherry picking certain slides to screenshot or re-typing only stuff that clearly answers the Learning Objective (I can do this because at my school if they test on something that is NOT a learning objective the exam committee can see this and give us points back for the professor's mistake). What I find, is that when I do this it is annoying because I'm basically trying to organize the PowerPoint on how it should have been presented so that it's coherent (ugh) and that it takes longer to reviewing, but then I tend to do better when I do this like my grades show that this method tends to score me better marks because I'm processing the info a lot more by making a Word document of the learning objectives then answering them. I don't use this method all the time for the sake of time but if you have the speed to do this then I hope it helps (If I were a faster reader and type this would like be your best friend). Regardless, i prefer Method 1. Also, I do this thing with spaced repetition where I usually go into Custom study so I don't actually use the spaced repetition function often but yeah, when it's nearing the exam I actually reset the cards because if I don't when I press again it'll be like half a year that I'll see it again but I have a final in 2 months. So I kind of do spaced repetition in an unconventional way too.

Yes, but as pro hardcore slacker I have an even better lazy ass method (i crammed 4.5 months of 5 different modules in 3 weeks, and it was the first time i've actually read those lectures in my 3 week intense cramming (why? I have adhd+ too many hobbies and cramming always worked so it's a vicious cycle)). So use my method only as last resort To put it short: No anki ; I use excel. exemple: -I have immunology and 40 lectures (each of them bout 1h-1h30 real time class courses). - vertically: In column 1 to 40 with name of chapter. ex: 1/ lymphoid organs ... 4/ thymus .. to 40/. - horizontally: For the 1st view where I bulldoze through all the slides, I write nothing, in excel, but mark important slides and key points THAT I DONT KNOW, and . For the 2nd view , I try to remember as much as I can, especially key points, and after i've done this. I rollback and mark on excel the essential things I didn't know, and also pathologies and nouns that are usually hard to remember (also numbers) Exemple: 4/ thymus ---- digeorge --- pos and neg selection --- epith -- week fct And I go on doing all the 40 lectures and marking horizontally. -3rd lecture: I go straight to those points and my objective is to know as many of them. For the ones that I still don't know: I highlight them in yellow in excel. That way my mind will pay EXTRA attention (for forcing my brain to remember) when I read it. And I "anki" myself for the 40 lectures. AFTER, I'd start reviewing all lectures 1 to 40 and thanks to excel and yellow marking, my brain will pay extra attention during that reviewing. After that 3rd lecture, I should be exam ready. And I add a 4th lecture If I want to smash the exam. Whether or not I do that 4th review, I still review the "horizontal ankies" i've made before exam for that short term memory. Also worht mention after the 1st or 2nd lecture I check the questions from exam of last year to see what the professors are attacking us with.

Wha... wha.... I'll be honest, this is EXACTLY how I already make flashcards and study them , as doing cards daily is absolutely out of question when you have lectures which take almost half the day. The only difference I have is that I study the books and make notes in a summary form, and make cards out of them using image occulusion.

It's not about working smart or working hard but about what you're studying. If you just need the information for an exam and don't mind forgetting the next week, then this is perfect. But if you're learning languages like me and a pretty big portion of anki's users, spaced repetition is the way to go. It's important for adding vocabulary, grammatical structures, etc. to your long-term memory.

9:53 Sorry, but sometimes this just isn't the case. I've done this multiple times before where I leave out things I thought were "unimportant", only for the test to have questions that covered every single thing we went through and thus I didn't know the answers. Same with my brother, where he has a class that asks random questions from his textbook on very peculiar things that you would think were unimportant. So, it depends on the class - sometimes, you actually do need to know everything they teach you. You can't just always leave out flashcards due to your judgement.

If that is how you are using Anki, then I would highly recommend getting an ipad, using notability and just draw over the sentence with a marker; use the erase tool to uncover the sentence/word to see if you properly recalled it. mark over the sentence in red if you couldn't recall it yet, then when you successfully understood and recalled the information, either keep it uncovered or mark it up with a yellow marker (rinse and repeat if you want more repetition). There are a few issues with using solely IO cards like that. First, the files can become HUGE which makes them a pain to send around. It's ok if it's like less than 50 cards per deck, but once it gets bigger, it can slow the app down and make syncing very sluggish. Second, you can't search for the words in the browse section; anki's UI is not that advanced yet, so if you want to use it as your all in one searching tool, then you should avoid IO for words as much as you can. The beauty of anki which makes it different from other apps (aside from the spaced repetion algorithm), is the way you can tag, cross-link and add extra information in each and every card. As a 2nd year medical student who has been using anki for about 3 years at this point (and does between 500-1000 cards a day), using cloze deletion is honestly the way to go imo. You will have all of the benefits of the IO technique (grouping pieces of information into 1 card) with the added bonus of it being lighter on your computers memory load. It can take just as little time as the IO method if you use keyboard shortcuts (download the godmode addon, it'll save you a LOT of time). Nowadays, since I'm studying for the USMLE/COMLEX, I don't make cards anymore since everything is premade, which is soooooo nice lol.
@joeburreaux7953
@joeburreaux7953 2 года назад
This deserves more attention. Writing these down with hand, even on a tablet, is way more effectively in recalling than just pressing spacebar and saying it out loud. I'm a big fan of Anki, but after trying the image occlusion method, I didn't find that I could recall information very well. I'm going to try your Notability method and see how useful it is.
@starrylaura
@starrylaura 2 года назад
Totally agree with you on the tagging and searching aspect, but not so much the cloze deletions. I pretty much used Nathan's single-day approach all through the pre-clinical part of med school, but I type out most of the cards instead, so that I still have the tagging/searching integration. It's a HUGE time suck, but I'm more actively processing the information, plus expecting myself to recall chunks of information in a logical and procedural way (as Nathan demonstrated), rather than just memorizing a cloze deletion. Of course, clozes might work for some students; I just find that they are not satisfying and do not facilitate long-term understanding of pathophysiology. Also yeah, app can get sluggish with images but it sounds like cloze-oriented students use premade decks like AnKing anyways, which also take eons to sync.

I have a question. I’m not in the health field, I’m transitioning into cybersecurity. Professor Messer has slides for his classes and i was just wondering if this will work for me. I’m trying get 3 certs in 6-8 months. I have practice tests but those flash cards in Anki aren’t helping me. I have to sit down and physically do the tests in 90 minutes to practice for the real test, not get questions through flash cards. I’m going to give this a try. When I go into Linux+ and pentest + I’ll make my own slides and import them into Anki. Also Ik this is for short term memory but I’m using it in conjunction with 9 practice tests so the information will literally be embedded in my brain.

for me that was pure clickbait. Your routine is not even close to unconventional. Its one of the biggest strategies for anki. Immage occlusion add on is the biggest anki add on and about 80% of anki users use anki addons so we can conclude that probably about 50% of all anki users use immage occclusion. And now guess how most students use the immage occlusion add on? Right screenshot their slides I dont know which anki routine is more popular than yours (except clozing everything or downloading stranger packs)
