PART 1 of the Ultimate Guide on how to Metal Detect... Permissions and Land!!!
You can't start metal detecting without having somewhere to go and in this video I will show you how to overcome both these obstacles!
And please stay tuned for part two which I will bring out in a couple of days time hopefully then will start talking properly about metal detectors and other equipment.
Anyway I hope you enjoy it and that it proves useful in some way...
MY EQUIPMENT:
⭐️The XP Deus I (Lite) which I use, is now at the incredible price of only £449 (Regtons are selling via Amazon) Please use this link as then I get looked after too! Thank you!

Great video as always 👍🏻. Myself and a friend of mine who I detect with have a few permissions. A couple came from knowing the land owner previously. One from a 'friend of a friend' putting in a good word. And some of our best came from sending an email to the land owner. I searched for local farms and farm shops on google to see if any had a website, and from those, I looked for the 'contact us' section and sent an email. The best and most fruitful permission we have (400 acres) was gained from an email. We have been on there for over a year now and have had all sorts of lovely finds. I have also done the face to face approach but never had any luck with it unfortunately. I suppose it's horses for course on both sides.....the person seeking permission needs an approach that the land owner will be conducive too. My advice for those still seeking their first permission, would be to keep trying and those two things will eventually marry up 👍🏻

One good way to get permission: Go talk to the farmer when he is on the field, ask him if he has lost some tractor parts, tell him you can help and you helped other farmers, mention names of nearby farmers you got permission, and for sure it is the best if you live in the same area to get confidence growing

This shared wisdom should be invaluable to the budding detectorist Alex. Many newcomers buy a machine and struggle to find anywhere to use it and are surprised at the amount of things they need to understand beforehand. I sense a few more videos on this subject. 😃👍

I dont even know where to start . I would never buy equipment without knowing locations and rules so I feel I am making the correct decision on that . But I am struggling to even find how to start . I am located in Wigan and trying to find maybe some sort of open day or if there is such thing .
@mickdavis8521
@mickdavis8521 Год назад
@@gothicgorey your best bet is to look for a local club while searching for your own permissions. Also look for pay and play groups (you can find these on social media platforms) as they are open to all (with the necessary insurance). It is advisable to educate yourself about ‘good practice’ and the requirements of the treasure act etc. This video is a great start.

Thank you! Very well done. As a rather new metal detectorist in the Western United States, I truly envy the age of the relics that you are able to hunt for. I live vicariously through your finds. After digging for over a year, I have found nothing but trash and modern coins. It tries my patience with the hobby, but videos like yours give me motivation to carry on. Keep up the good work and good humor.

That's really tough TR - all I can say is please keep on trying and I'm sure you'll find something really good soon… It will happen when you least expect it mark my words when you're about to give up and smash your metal detector against the ground, that's when it will happen! Keep yer pecker up, as we say around here! All the best, Alexander

Hi there sir, I understand that you live in the Western U.S.A but i did watch a documentary a while ago about a guy who found a gem stone and gold ring worth about $300,000 dollars, this came from searching the beaches and inlets in Florida where Spanish galleons were shipwrecked from storms in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic oceans Of course i know nothing about U.S or State laws about metal detecting and do not wish you to break any. Obviously i understand you are on the opposite side of the continent and that Florida might as well be on the other side of the moon, but America has its treasures as well!.....i wish you luck for the future...(from across the pond)

I saw a RU-vid video a year or so ago about metal detecting the trails that waggon trains took heading West, and how you can, in places, still see the giant cartwheel ruts and the line of the old trail. Some of those giant wheels were taller than a man, sometimes drawn by cattle, and bits of wheel hardware and waggon ironmongery would fall to the ground. I know it might not be remarkable to you but people find all sorts from that era, especially bullets, cutlery from the camp kitchens, hose shoes and other metal goods. From my perspective here in southern England it sounds like a fabulously exciting experience. I'm sure the occasional coin surfaces, as well as the odd gun and sheath knife. I have no idea how you'd find the original trails, though there must be extensive records, but as that was such a massively pivotal time not just for America but for the whole world, the sense of history in any finds has to be wonderfully exciting.

Excellent video, Alexander. You explained it perfectly. Permissions are the hardest things to obtain, with the hobby being so popular. If you are lucky to get a permission, make sure you talk to and show your finds to the landowner. My landowner has a display cabinet for some of my interesting finds. I don't mind this as it shows my honesty and in turn I am the only one allowed to defect on the property and no groups allowed. Looking forward to the next video on equipment.

I have detected a lot of beaches and found quite a few Roman coins. I was detecting beaches from 1969 and through the 1970s. I built my own beach machines for that purpose. I am doing beaches again now and have found Saxon and possibly other interesting periods. The modern Simultaneous Multi-Frequency machines work best on beaches. Beach detecting is a black art and takes a while to master it is not just a case of turning up and swinging all over the beach . It pays to understand the weather and tides and know how to read the beach and be expert at knowing your detector. 👍🏻

Thank you for making this video! I live in Birmingham, UK and i am from a British Asian background and i am very interested in getting involved with this hobby. I can easily purchase all the important metal detecting tools but what i find difficult to do is actually getting the permissions from the landowners. There may be a particular piece of land that i may want to metal detect on but i have no idea how to find out who the landowner is. I plan on metal detecting this year and i think the best way to start for a beginner like me would be to join a metal detecting club and take part in these metal detecting rallies.

Hi Alex great channel and great advice what is the exact make and model of your machine and is it a great all rounder having no screen to look at i.e. both field and beach i currently have a Garrett ace 150 and just rely on the tones as that's pretty much all i can do I'm wondering whether i will get better results with a machine like yours and I'm here in the UK on the south coast
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Год назад
Hi Moto south, hope all well! It definitely sounds like you need an upgrade I went from the Garrett Ace 250 to my present machine which is the XP Deus Lite -no remote - all the information is audio and it's not great for the beach either but if you read the manual carefully and watch the videos on RU-vid about the Deus Lite you'll soon get the hang of it and it's a bloody brilliant machine cost me £1300 quid back in the day you can pick one up for £450 now!!!! See my link to it in this video... There is absolutely no doubt that you will get better results once you get the hang of it but as I said I don't think it's ideal for beach work but bullet for everything else! All the Best, Alexander
@moto-south
@moto-south Год назад
@@HolzHammerSagas thanks Alex I wonder if the deus lite 2 is the one to go for as I think it has a beach mode my problem is I only have the 1 permission and I’m always digging rubbish with my machine so if I want a change it will be the beach for me which I haven’t been able to do so far as the Garrett ace 150 doesn’t do beach I hope you are well on the road to recovery as I do miss your out in the field videos but I’m currently making my way through your older videos and also your other channels we are spoilt for choice.regards Jon

@@HolzHammerSagas yes, there’s definitely something about them. I do tend to look at pasture fields differently now I’m more experienced, the fields have to have a certain look, I find I’ve found much more things rather than the fields I’ve searched that I haven’t been so interested in. When I say a certain look it’s dips, flats, small inclines or unusual looking pasture. The dips can be Roman roads, the flats and small inclines can be potential old carriageways and unusual pasture can be evidence of old structures.

Thanks Julian! You are missing a trick... its fairly easy! Just go "scroll" down to "identification" click that... then click new post and start from there - to add photos you can either use the prompts or "drag" a photo in to the text box - as long as the file is not too big... hope that helps! I know I'm a bit late to this video, but hopefully my questions are still valid. I can't seem to see here, or anywhere for that matter, answers to the questions that have me wracking my brain about permissions. 1. What's in it for the landowner??? If I was big landowner, I'd probably chase everyone!! ...are unofficial deals struck? (I probably shouldn't be asking that here!) ..my brothers old father in law used to leave a bottle of malt on the step of the Lairds house in Scotland whenever he wanted to go fishing on his land!! That sort of thing. 2. When is the best time to ask for permission? Obviously if its farm land it will be seasonal, so there must be a couple of good times in the year, maybe? 3. Is it best to get a permission in writing? 4. When speaking or corresponding with a landowner, is it recommended to lay out all the official rules regarding finds / treasure, in advance, or will that just phase them? Just keep it simple? 5. Do I need to tell the landowner about myself? I.e. submit a kind of unofficial CV, with interests, previous permissions & detecting experience and finds etc. If anyone can help, thanks in advance 👍

@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas 6 месяцев назад
Hi Wobbly, I think technically both should be aware but i think as long standing tenants who obviuosly have a very good relationship with the Estate, unless the Estate have expressly not allowed the tenants to allow metal detecting then I'd just go for it! Good luck!

I'm sorry I think you are wrong, I think you need to think of what type of detecting, then purchase an appropriate machine as this then gives you the incentive to get permission or go beaching. Now I live in a seaside town and not knowing what I was doing I started on the beach only to find out that my detector wasn't quite up to beaching and one morning I had an epiphany I work at a hotel and that was my first permission

It sounds pretty hard to get in touch with the owners. There are loads of country pubs where a few of the farmers might frequent and you could talk to them right there on the subject, but as they are mostly the older guys you might talk to the farm workers, foramen/charge hands who go in for lunch or of an evening. they get up very early in the morning for work and work until dark during planting and harvesting times, so they might get a bit grumpy! Id like to see a vid of you making a permissions deal over the phone or through email or speak to the local council
