AND PLEASE SEE THE END OF THIS DISCRIPTION FOR ALL MY FILMING AND "HQ" EQUIPMENT -THANK YOU!!!
And please stay tuned for part three which I will bring out in a couple of days time hopefully then will start talking properly about other aspects of metal detecting...
Anyway I hope you enjoy it and that it proves useful in some way...
I haven’t given too many XP Deus tips or tips for metal detecting for beginners in this video but please feel free to leave a comment if you need to pick my brain over anything, especially if you are learning to use the XP Deus Lite.
And Please SUBSCRIBE!!! if you haven’t already - its really good fun making these short videos but they do take a bit of time and its really good to know they are being enjoyed!

Good advice Alexander! Two things that make my detecting a lot easier are wearing those work trousers where you can slip foam kneepads in (I'm afraid I do kneel down for most holes) and a little fold-out magnifying lens (because I'm reading glasses age but can't be bothered with them in the field). Thirdly I carry around a GPS receiver that I photograph finds on so that I can later record them in my GIS (because I'm sad and have no life).

Stefan I realised i needed weak reading glasses for some things when i could no longer thread the line through the eye of a small fly when I was fishing!!! So I just carry a cheap set round my neck! I can still see my finds though! Thanks for the Tips and hope all well!

Hi Alexander, it's Jan From Porth Newquay ,just watched your introduction to detecting all good useful information,like you I have the Daus Light plus their pinpointer which is a lot lighter than the Minlab I previously owned probably as good as the Daus but with a bad back a lot easier to use . All I can add to your videos would be dragging your spade behind you on the beach saves you going over the same part of the beach again. All the best ,Jan

@@HolzHammerSagas Well, yes I do have the Deus II and it is certainly a different beast. I still use my Deus I a lot of the time though as I'm just so used to it but still use the Deus II sometimes. I just want XP to bring out a Deus II update that gets rid of the iron buzz on some high conductors! It's a good machine but audio is king so they need to get it right... I'll get into it slowly as time goes on. I have a new video coming out around 6pm this Friday and I've used both machines in the making of it. The video features a really stunning silver hammered Groat of Henry VI I found and the condition is exceptional! 👌

I’ve gone from loads of stuff to hardly anything over time, especially in the last 6 months. In fact nothing now except a detector, headphones, spade, pin-pointer, tiny child sized trowel, similar apron style finds bag (mine is a waxed cotton one I made myself and is perfect), a tiny plastic finds box, and gloves. Gloves are essential for your own health. But everything else has been ditched - no toothbrushes or sprays or anything - you made me question why I carried them and I don’t miss them at all. You made me laugh on the brand loyalty thing - I think some people would defend their detector choice above defending their child. Sad but true. And you are right on the pros and cons of cheaper detectors. The law of diminishing returns sets in around £600 but up to then you get a lot more for each £ you spend, above £6-700 you don’t get the same return and is only worth it if you are detecting a lot. Glad you are taking it easy!

I take a carrier bag lined pouch for scrap, and I have another leg bag with pockets which has my cards/money/phone. Lunch.... LOL. I don't think I'm a travel-lite detectorist! Haha. Very good advice. Just watched both videos. I had my first permission before even buying a second hand Garrett EuroAce then the carrot! I'm a total novice but had found a few interesting things so far. A post medieval pot leg and then the handle near by was interesting and recently some coins and buckles. I love the hobby. It will take months to get round all this 13 acre permission (it is all pasture), around a 15th century manor house and 12th century church. Then I'm hoping to get on some bigger farms nearby that have connections with the manor house owners.

Great video again Alex lots of useful information. I completely agree with you on you get what you pay for. I got a minelab Xterra 305 because I didn't have the funds to spend at the time but they are great beginner machines then after a few months of getting use to the hobby I soon upgraded to a vanquish 540 and my finds have almost doubled but the Xterra was a great machine to start out on and got my first silver coin, a bullhead with it. But yeah you definitely do get what you pay for just like anything else really

Nice to see you again Alex, and glad to hear that you are gradually recovering. One feature of your videos that makes them stand out from others is the fact that you don't bother with the details on a detector screen. I know, I I don't know why people even bother with numbers - firstly they change all the time over the same target depending on depth, visibility etc and secondly if you're in the mood for digging and it's obviously not iron it it's not important what the "number" is anyway… if that makes any sense! Good advise Alex. I too started with a Garrett 300i. Only changed it for my Deus cos it is lighter. Got the same spade too. Dont know how people carry the heavy spades around all day. Id love to take my Jack.....lakeland x patterdale.....wouldnt see him for a week tho!!!!!!x

Hah!😂 Your Jack sounds very handsome being a Lakeland/ Patterdale cross... my last terrier was a Patterdale but a small quite delicate one; I love terriers I wonder which ones are the most ferocious?!l Taski is quite interesting; he absolutely loves all humans and other dogs but if another dog has a go at him he will not think twice about a minor attack and I wouldn't back against him either… I've got to be a bit careful! Another great video Alex, most entertaining and enlightening. Please don't do yourself down, they are brill! The Deus looks great without the extras. So slim I even wonder where the batteries go! 😳 Not sure if you have actually revealled what you had done, but it must be relatively serious to keep you in your basket, but at least you have avoided the 'cone of shame'! 🐕😄. Loving these vids! Take it steady! Martin. ps. my Garrett is only a 200! 😖

Would be great if there were events or rallies that you could rent a detector for the day and have a go with like minded people who can help you and see if you enjoy it before spending out on all the gear
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Год назад
I completely agree Anthony… I know companies like XP used to run, and perhaps still do, days when you could go and try their detectors and get tuition etc. Maybe they do do it on the bigger rallies as well; at least there you have a field or two to go and try the machine out and maybe find something half good! Anyway, hope all well with you and thank you very much for watching

Alex can you explain when or not to contact the FLO and can you describe your experience of using the PAS
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Год назад
Hi Nigel, Hope all well - You are only really under obligation to contact your FLO when you have a treasure item though it is obviously important to keep them up to speed with interesting things that you find but I do think that they are probably bothered far too much with very ordinary finds which slow the whole process down but they do say they want to see everything so… on a personal note, I have not had particularly good experiences with FLOs or the treasure process so tend to avoid them as much as possible! All the Best, Alexander

I would argue that experience, research and more importantly technique far out match what make, model or cost of machine you choose to purchase. I have been detecting for over 40 years and have witnessed time and time again bigger isn't always better when it comes to metal detecting.
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Год назад
I think that's probably very true Muirton… and I had forgot to say that a good entry level machine is definitely easier for the beginner to understand how metal detectors will actually work; a more expensive one with all the bells and whistles could easily confuse early on… I clearly remember the move from the garrett to the deus on a very iron infested field using not much just discrimination... I almost threw it away! Hope all well with you and thank you very much for watching! All the best, Alexander

PART III :"how to properly clean your finds, including even the worst cases" I know that you already made some cleansing clips but those dealt mostly with average degrees of dirt and I'm speaking more of the almost gone cases....like those tiny, often superficially diseased looking, silver quinari with their bloated & cracked surfaces I come across every now and then (yesterday again).....I'm such a noob when t comes to dealing with rotten ancient silver ! need advice from a roman coin vet 😓
@HolzHammerSagas
@HolzHammerSagas Год назад
Feldgeist those bloated and cracked surfaces are not a good sign on Roman silver... more often than not it is because they are "fourees", contemporary counterfeits - what you see is the copper leeching out from below the silver veneer - there's is not much you can do and what you do try will probably make it worse! 😁 and I'm afraid I'm not really expert enough for deep cleaning techniques I'm afraid! I I'd only probably make stuff worse myself and get into trouble! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander

@@HolzHammerSagas expected to hear that and they sometimes indeed looking like corroded to death wonder why as the majority of them are early ones yesterday's apparently without a legend and showing a beardless bust with a quite pronounced nose (weird Augustus I guess) - left and right of the bust is bloated and the whole tail-side simply gone the coin blank itself appearing to be pretty unaffected and solid underneath but the surface on the other hand more like true corrosion damage historical value for my region sadly too high to try out funny methods, so I better follow your advice and leave it as it is......once more.... always assumed that they used the more or less same high quality silver for the Quinari as they did for the Denari in the 1st AD....those damn unchecked counterfeiters of old ! cheerio Erik
