This video will show you how to migrate Google Drive to another Google Drive account without downloading the files.
The video describes the steps to migrate Google Drive from Google Workspace and from a Gmail account. It will consider the restrictions that you may find when moving your docs from a Google Workspace account.

Good video but if you have a load of files and folders this method takes too long as you cant give ownership to the entire folder structure. There is a much easier way to do this. In the first google drive account share the files or folders you want to transfer with the second account. On the second account copy the entire folder and paste a new one. This will automatically make the second account the owner of the new folders and all the subfolders and files. There are free online tools that can do this for you. And you wont go insane trying and give ownership of loads of files.

Hi Chris, if you have a lot of of folders and files, the process could be very tedious and long. There are some tools that will allow you to do the transfer easily and faster, but you may need to pay (depending on the amount of data). Here is one example: www.multcloud.com/

Of you have folders within the folders, this will not work. You would need to go into the deepest part of the folder structure and copy over every file and recreate every folder. An alternative option that might work is to download the entire backup folder ( i called it backup) as a zip, then upload it to the other drive. Be sure to have in the settings of that destination drive that you checked the checkmark to convert uploads to google drive formatting, or else all files made within google drive, will be show in the new folder as office documents where applicable. of course, this is your own choice. No solution is perfect with them for some dumb reason not allowing us to copy folders. But, multiple solutions exist. The zip download, unpacking and reupload is the faster one if you have fast enough internet and a big drive with large folder structure. And definitely less manual labor. Thanks for the video, it was my first stop in finding out the options.

Thank you for you comment. There might be different ways to migrate from OneDrive to Google Drive. One of them is downloading the files to a local drive and then uploading them again to Google Drive. If you were able to change/transfer the ownership of the folders and files, then, the files should not be taking storage space in the original account. It means that you don't need to remove them. Now, if you created a copy of the files and folders instead, make sure that this copy is in MyDrive of the new account. In this case, you can delete the files from the original account. if you want to transfer files from a school account, you probably won't be able to transfer ownership (Google Workspace restrictions), then you will need to share and then make a copy of the shared files/folders in your target account. Precise explanation, but I noticed in the new drive the size of the drive was still ZERO and the OLD drive had the same size as before, does this mean if I delete the same file from the OLD drive i will loose both Copies?

Make sure that the new drive is actually the new owner of the folder and also the files. The storage should go against the new Drive if the new Drive is the owner. Also, if the files and folder are still shared with the old drive, then the old drive can still delete the files. If the old drive delete the files, you will lose them. Hello, it doesnt work when i share the MOVED FILE from old Drive to New Drive. The ownership of the file is ok to bew account but all the inner files ( each one) is still the property of Old account. Cannot either copy files ( not the option on right click ??)

Please make sure the new account is the owner of folder and also files within the folders. The old drive can still delete the files, unless the new drive stop sharing it or you remove the permission to edit the share files. It depends on the share settings, If you create your own copy within "MyDrive" in account B, then you can delete the files in account A. In any case, if you were able to transfer the files by changing the ownership, the files should not take storage in account A anymore. Hope ii helps. thank you!

When I go to transfer ownership, it states, "Sorry, cannot transfer ownership to *my new email address*. If you are traying to transfer from a Google Workspace account, you can't transfer ownership. In this case, you need to create share the files/folders and make a copy of them in My Drive of the new account (where you want to transfer the files). After making the copy within My Drive of the new account, you can remove it from the original account. Thank you.

The number of accounts is not a limitation to make this type of migration. If you want to migrate all the content to a single account, you will need to purchase the necessary storage space for the target account. You can buy additional storage for a personal account or you can also purchase a Business account (Google Workspace Standard for example) and then work on the migration. Hope it helps. Thank you.

First, make sure you have change the ownership of the folder and files as well. If the new owner is still sharing the files with the original owner, then the original owner can still delete the files and both will lose them. Keep in mind that the storage space go against the new owner's storage. Instead of deleting the files from the original account, what you probably want to do is stop sharing the files. When you transfer the ownership (of folders and files) the storage goes against the new owner. It means that you should not need to delete the files. At this point, the new owner, can stop sharing it with the old owner and the files and folders will not be visible in the old drive. If you delete the files and folders from the old drive, they will also be deleted from the new drive as well. Hope it clarify how it works. Thank you!

Hi. I unfortunately can't transfer the ownership. Google says that ''Ownership can only be transferred to another user in the same organization as the current owner.'' Which is unfortunately impossible for me to do.

Good explanation, however it appears that all files that are copied will have the "Copy of " pre-pended to the files and will have to be manually changed, one by one. What a hassle.

Hi Arathi, if you are transferring files from a Google Workspace account, it is expected that you are not going to be able to change ownership unless it is to another user under the same domain name. in that case, if it is Google Workspace, it is possible that the organizations has a policy that prevent creating or copying the files.

Hi I have seen your video and you have described in detail each and everything but your video and videos of the so many other peoples on the RU-vid who want to give the right information to transfer the file from one drive to another ………………all are not the solution . The reason you that you say that's if we want to move the multiple files we should make a folder and put all the files and then after sharing we can transfer the on the ship here is the clear that whatever you want to say it is easy .......... and you have ended the video here . I have adopted your way but only I can able to transfer the on the ship of the folder but what about a contents which I want to transfer from on edrive to another, it' is taking time and now I am spending a lot time to make the ownership of each file by one. It is time consuming !!!!!!!. I seen many videos but still there is no any satisfactory answer if I need one want to make the on the ship of the multiple files . By your method we are able to only give the ownership of the folder but a contents inside are very hard to transfer the ownership specially in multiple files . Please be clear and tell us how we can transfer our multiple files because only we can get the ownerships of the folder only ….. Not the contents inside .

Hello, you are correct. You need to change the ownership of all folders and the files (inside the folders) in order to complete the transfer. The other alternative is to create a copy of the shared folders and files. There are other options, but you would need to purchase a third party service/software that connect to both Drive accounts and make the transfer for you. Thank you and have a nice day!

It is the first time I hear about this error. I investigated and some people suggested that it could be a temporary issue. Other people suggested to erase the cookies and cache from your browser. You can also try from a different browser and see the result. Hope it help. Thank you.

You can try creating your own copy (folders and files) in My Drive (the new account). Hope it helps. Thanks.

Manually copying each individual file from one Google Workspace account to another is not a feasible solution when you are talking about 300+ GB of data.
