How to Mix Vibrant & Authentic Greens in Watercolor

If you're painting a landscape with a lot of green in it, it can be hard to make the different greens stand out from each other. Some greens feel too bright to be natural, shadowed greens can look too blue. So many new painters struggle to work with the color green, but green can be one of the most fun colors to work with if you follow a few simple principles.
1. Start with a vibrant green and you'll have more options for mixing to get different variations. I like Green Gold and Phthalo Green (Blue Shade)
2. Use a single base color to mix your greens. You can start with a yellow and add turquoise or Phthalo Blue and the variations are endless as you tweak that mix with tiny splashes of red or magenta.
3. Have fun with pre-mixed greens. Daniel Smith makes some that are so fun to work with. I like Zoisite, Kingman Green Turquoise, Cascade Green.
4. Pay attention to the "temperature" of your colors. Warm blue and yellow will mix more cleanly than a warm temp of one and a cool of the other. Experiment and find your favourites!

I love using greens! Since I first began painting in oils many many years ago, using a limited palette, I learned quite early how to mix my greens from the blues and yellows, reds and browns. I love green gold and sap green, though I add to the latter. It's nice having choices in greens now, and I like to play with them. Thank you Angela for a great video. I know my painting partner always hated greens, and I'm sure she'll benefit from this video.

Thank you, Angela, you've given me some more options for greens. I live in Aiken, South Carolina where it is VERY green. I'll invest in Zoisite Genuine for a darker green. I've seen you use it before and I like it. I do like using violet to darken greens.....it gives the dark more character. Thank you for this tutorial. I always look forward to your demonstrations.

Thank you for this tutorial. I have recently been playing with the colors I have to create landscape greens that look good. I just haven't mixed the right colors to produce the results I have been looking for. But now, after following and mixing along with you, I have hit pay dirt! love the use of green gold with the ultramarine and sienna. I don't have DS's green gold, but I do have QOR's version and have found that I can come up with a similar color by mixing QOR's green gold (PY 129) with pthalo green or using nickle quin gold PY 150) with pthalo green, and maybe adding a touch of light to mid-tone yellow to the mixes (just need to be sure to mix enough to complete the project). Thanks again, you really rock!!!!

Hi Angela thanks for this video about greens. I really enjoyed painting was green. New Zealand is so very very green! So we get a lot of opportunity and I really enjoy mixing them with different oranges and reds as you suggested. Also I have to say my all time favourite green, is Daniel Smith Greengold. I absolutely love it’s bright lime quality, its transparency and its versatility how it can just turn into so many different colours with the additions of blues and yellows. Thanks again for everything you offer so generously ⭐️🎨⭐️

The big green monster was my nemesis for a year. Finally I'm starting to tame the monster. I like mixing it on the page but I'm not a fan of sap green. Phtalo green I have always liked but other artists discourage it because its unnatural and staining. But it mixes so well, I was confused and felt naughty. Lol. I'm starting not to hate green with those aha moments, and finally getting a grip on color wheel. Seems basic But it took me a long time to understand it. Thanks Angela.💜

I like all of your tutorials, but giving examples on how to mix colors is ALWAYS a major help. Breaking color down into bite sizes really allows me to learn the specific colors that work together. Color is always a topic I need more of. Color Theory seems like a magical world that I never feel at home in. I would really benefit from much more of this kind on discussion. Thanks!

Due to a very, very rainy winter and some health problem that moved me away from the painting, when I decided to paint a watercolor and opened the two boxes of SCHMINCKE watercolors, I found them all full of mold and could not see the pills. I never leave a closed box with wet paint. Another two boxes of watercolors, one had several infected pills as well and the other gives me the impression that the colors ... I don't know, maybe I think so because I don't see mold. Naturally I threw those of SCHMINCKE and it was a drama because they were my favorites. What can be done to avoid such a thing? I would like to know how I can save my watercolor drawings so that they do not spoil, I have heard that they have to be wrapped in tissue paper. What do you advise me. Thank you.

I’m still using up my Cotman viridian... it is beautifully intense and also very staining... seems to compare more to the pthalo you described. (I do love it...very versatile) Could the brand vary and actually be pthalo? Also...Thank you for the free beginner class this week. It was a blessing! You’re a beautiful lady inside and out. Yes, student grade watercolor "Viridian" is usually Phthalo Green PG7 instead of the granulating pigment PG18 which is more expensive. Cotman Viridian is Phthalo Green, and will work the same as Angela shows. :)
