If you wondered how to get the Scott's Pro 18" manual reel mower to mow less than 1"...
This quick modification will allow you to mow at 1/2" or less to get that nice golf course fairway lawn look.
McMaster-Carr has an assortment of conveyor rollers that will work for this modification. I purchased one last year to modify my Earthwise 16" reel mower.
You will want a 2" diameter conveyor roller, 7/16" Hex axle (they only come in Hex style, which still works fine). 20" between frame width.

This will be my next project. I just got the 20 inch reel mower as a new home owner (and the desire to have the best yard in the neighborhood). I was disappointed when the lowest it could go was 1 inch

Mike you are the Man! This is awesome and exactly what I needed. Thank you so much! Much more affordable then a Hudson Star, LOL

Awesome explanation!! I know you've mentioned its hard to adjust height of cut with your modifications with the conveyor rollers now... but at this point would it be easier to adjust the height of cut (for once a year scalping) by adjusting the two bigger wheels up front?
@TheBitsonEffect
@TheBitsonEffect Год назад
You definitely could do that. There are 3 settings for the wheels behind the center caps.

After using both - and having modified both to mow low - do you prefer the Earthwise 7 blade or the Scott's Pro 7 blade? The wider track isn't important to me personally as I have a small lawn. Just installed TifTuf and was thinking of adding a roller to my Scotts 5 blade classic, or springing for a 7 blade.

@TheBitsonEffect 2 года назад
After modifying both, the Earthwise is easier to adjust height of cut. I can easily adjust from 5/8" up to 1" or 1-1/4" fairly quick and easy. I like the Scott's because it is wider, but I now keep it on one height of cut setting because the modification limits the range I can cut with. If you are okay with 16" wide, the Earthwise 7-blade (with modifications) is great value.

@@TheBitsonEffect Thanks so much! I don’t think the 2” different will make a big difference to me - my Bermuda lawn is < 500 sq/ft. Have you put a McMaster roller on the Earthwise?

@@ranerg318 Yes I have. Here is the exact part number I purchased last year. Part # 2281T14 (2-1/2" Diameter Conveyor Roller, 7/16" Hex Axle, Steel, for 16" Between Frame Width). It works great with it.

Looking for a 7 blade reel mower for my bermuda 5,000 Sq ft lawn, should I go with this or the earthwise?
@TheBitsonEffect
@TheBitsonEffect 2 года назад
I would go with the Scott's 18 inch for 5,000 square feet. There is one caveat, If you want to mow different heights during the year, the Earthwise is easier to adjust down to 3/8 of an inch and back up to 2 inches. The Scott's won't go below 1 inch without a modification. Once you modify, it's a pain to change back to mow at 1 inch or above. Hope this helps, Kristin!

I ordered the exact part you listed and it’s not working. Any ideas?
@TheBitsonEffect
@TheBitsonEffect 2 года назад
Not sure. Another viewer said he ordered the same and it worked. One side of the hex shaft should be spring loaded. You insert the stationary side first and then push the spring loaded side in to go in the whole. If the hex shaft is slightly too tight, you could bore the hole on the reel mower slightly to fit.

@@TheBitsonEffect how do you pull the spring loaded rod out of the ordered roller?
@johnhanks4052
@johnhanks4052 Год назад
Same here. The physical dimensions of the roller do not fit between the mounting flanges of the rear wheels. Has nothing to do with the spring loaded hex shafts. You should remove this roller recommendation, it is not correct.

@@TheBitsonEffect from your experience. Will a front roller like one from a Mclaine work ?
@TheBitsonEffect
@TheBitsonEffect 2 года назад
It won't be a front roller, it will be a rear roller. You would have to modify quite a bit more to put a front roller on. McMaster-Carr has conveyor rollers that will work for the rear, you will have to make sure all your measurements are correct. www.mcmaster.com/conveyor-rollers/
@TheBitsonEffect
@TheBitsonEffect 2 года назад
It could, but you would have to modify the mower quite a bit. Adding a rear roller is much easier.
