I'm a landscaper and this is how I edge as well. People complain about it all the time. "Why are you digging a trench?" ugh...How the edge looks is 'imo' the most important part of the look.

Not convinced. I am an age 70 female who has been doing my own yardwork as long as I can remember. Hubby preferred the housework which suited us both just fine. I'd come in after a day of playing in the dirt to dinner on the table. On football night he'd add a glass of wine so I would pass out early while he enjoyed the game. Cutting that edge is the easy part. Maintenance is the problem. You claim mowing is easy. I see nothing to support all the wheels of the mower. If the mower blades do not remain parallel to the lawn surface, the blades will chop that sharp dirt edge to shreds and scalp the turf. Case in point, my neighbor has been using a weed whacker to edge his lawn along the sidewalks. When that edge gets shacky he whacks again, cutting away more and more of the turf and ever deeper into the dirt. There is now a dirt gutter all around his lawn at least 6 inches wide. He's done it to part of my lawn too and I cannot wrangle my mower wheels over that steep dirt cliff. If not the mower, then rain and foot traffic will collapse your steep dirt cliff. I've seen several landscape ideas that look gorgeous when first installed until Mother Nature expresses her opinion with an enormous belly laugh. We accomplish nothing without her consent. Those who attempt defiance quickly learn who's boss.

Will the grass work it's way into the mound? or does the drop in elevation prevent that?

Problem I have is the mulch falls down the slope into the "trench" area and then the zoysia goes to town and starts growing on the mulch (especially if I am not diligent about weed whacking - which is harder because of the mulch). I may go back to the plastic edging :(

This looks like a great way to attach the striping kit, might even be able to modify the EGO mower to attach this way, but two years into the future they have a new mounting kit for the Big League Lawns CheckMate™ that attaches to the handle rails instead of the mower itself. I don't know if the striper kit attaches to the Ryobi in this way, but it should be easy to wrap a piece of rubber from an old innertube around the handles to keep them from scratching, then bend some thin steel 1" straps around the handle, drill a hole, and attach the striper kit to the mower that way without risking voiding the warranty by drilling holes in the mower.

Also, the 450 and 500 are better because you can use .105 line.
@The_Grillfather
@The_Grillfather 2 месяца назад
Ok, first, since you have a bunch of Ryobi stuff in your garage and are clearly using Expand-It attachments, they have an edger attachment. What you have there, is a trimmer. You don't remove the guard from a trimmer unless you fuck your sister and have mongiloid kids. First, you edge with a BLADE, then you do clean up with the trimmer line. You also do not cut with a trimmer, you trim where you can't cut. If you're going to post videos offering people advice, or making product suggestions, at least know what the fuck you're talking about.

I am not a fan of this type of edging and will always prefer an actual hard edging to define a bed. The after picture to me looks like the bed is sunk. and sitting in a hole. If the before edging was better maintained, it would look so much better and more defined.

Awesome video thanks, that answers a lot of my questions. I don't really want to spend hundreds on the garden bed I built last month, it's cost over $1000 already between soil, mulch, and plants. I bought a nice half moon edging tool (came with a lifetime warranty, oooh😅) I'll have to look for one of those square shovels. Looks like Walmart has them less than $20
