Thank you so much for this video! I watched it about 20 times as I moved my vanity light which had been installed about five inches off center, something I'd never tried before. You gave me the confidence to take it on, and every time I encountered a roadblock, there was advice for me in the video. Thank you so much!

They make plastic remodel outlet boxes that pinch to the drywall, and they can handle standard vanity lights too! Comes in handy when you need a light box to be in that spot and there is no studs or block wall behind it.

Hi, I like the light fixture. It looks modern and bright enough for using in the bathroom. I'm new to your channel but I'm not new to DIY projects. I'm always looking for good videos to help me get all the details and possible issues that might come up before I start a project, as well as troubleshooting as I go. I subscribed because you explain things great and are very detailed and thorough with whatever job you're doing. I appreciate all the information you share and the experience you've had. Thanks, very much! I've got an old floor to ceiling pole lamp with 3 sconces and need to change out the wiring, both inside and out. 2 of the sconces that come off the pole are loose so I need to figure out how to tighten them. I'm not sure if this is within your expertise but if so, could you please do a video? Thanks again, :D

Thanks so much, I have the exact same problem, except it's a pvc pipe, 2 or 3" in diameter which will make it tight. I'm thinking about using your method using the shims to create a surface right behind the drywall to which I'll attach the 1/2" electrical box. It's a single romex 3 wire cable, and the fixture is pretty light weight, so I think it'll work .
@jeffostroff

Yes, either way you'll want to avoid that pipe by as much space as you can, shoot for 2" to 3" away, this will help avoid future mishaps where someone thinks they are screwing in additional screws to the outlet box going into the "stud", only to find out later that stud was a pipe!

not sure where you live, but in Canada, your work is contrary to the Canadian Electrical Code. The shallow box allows for 2 conductor wires only, i.e. one black , one white. there is not enough box "fill" to accommodate your extra wires, An inspector would fail your installation immediately. I would assume (without me checking further) that this would fail in the USA as well.

Wherever you want to move it to, you will have to use an angle grinder to cut a hole in the tile wall, and then mount your new box. Hopefully you don't hit a stud. Assume the studs start in the corner, then every 16" from there.

Thanks for this video I didn’t know they made a more shallow box or can… is there any worry with placing electrical right in front or that copper pipe? If there is any leak will the wires be ok?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 года назад
There are no worries about the pipe leaking it is not in front of any type of soldered fitting like a 90 degree turn in the pipe or anything like that. At 6:27 in the video you can see I used blue Tapcon anchors to anchor some wood onto the concrete and then this thin outlet can will then screw onto the wood and I sized it so that the wood will make the can stick out proud in front of the copper pipe a little bit so they will not be touching. You will not have any issues with dissimilar metals touching each other that's my very skillful engineering that thinks of all these little things.

robert, this is what you need: homedepot.sjv.io/gb5yR9 this is a 1-Gang 18 cu. in. Round Old Work Electrical Box. You cut a round hole in the drywall, and this pinches itself to the front and back of the drywall using those 3 winglets that grab the back side of the drywall.

If they don't you can run a new Romex 14-2 cable from the light switch. I have had to do that before. No matter what, don't make any hidden junction wiring connection inside the wall, it is a massive safety and NC electric code violation. Every wiring connection must be inside a can.

My old vanity light in the bathroom has an electrical plug outlet on top which is now irrelevant. I am replacing the complete unit. What do I do with the wires that go to the plug outlet?? Does this require some special attention??
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Rick, great question. I am assuming the wires going to that little outlet on your old vanity light are also connected to the light socket, correct? If so you can remove them, leaving just one set of Romex wire behind to power the light socket. BUT, if the builder ran 2 sets of wires (one for the light, and one for the outlet), you can cap off the electrical outlet's old wires inside the vanity light can using plastic wiring nuts, or if possible, remove the Romex wire for the outlet all the way back to the last outlet done the line that sources this outlet. that would usually be the outlet by the sink. Either way, keep in mind that National Electric Code forbids hidden junctions inside the walls. This is why if you decide to leave the Romex cable for the electrical outlet unused and inside the wall, it must be inside a can where it is accessible.

I have exactly the same problem. I wanted to replace the light fixture in the basement bathroom. The light had been installed without a box at all. I measured, determined where centre was, cut and discovered the water pipe right smack in the middle of the cut out. I was going to put in a box with the wings that attach to the back of the drywall, but it is way too deep. When I inquired at HD about using that pan box BC56111 for that situation the rep told me that would be not acceptable because there would be a dissimilar metals reaction caused by the galvanized metal box and the copper pipe. I thought I heard a comment about dissimilar metals in your video, but this pan was installed anyway. Just wondering if it could work for my situation, or do I have to move the water pipe?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Well I am impressed with the guy at home depot for knowing about that yes you can not have dissimilar metals touching because you will develop corrosion between the 2 and eventually it would cause the pipe to fail and you would have a leak in the wall. What you can do is put something in between the outlet Box and the pipe like a thick rubber gasket or something or preferably something saw that like plastic which would prevent the to from ever touching. If I recall member correctly from the video I think we placed wood blocks behind the outlet that gave it enough space that it didn't touch the pipe.

I'm still planning. I suppose I can pop open one of the tiles to expose the dry wall where I want to move the light and custom order a 42" mirror with a hole centered over the new hole that will cover up the exposed drywall. I just don't know if it's easier to pop off one big 15" tile vs drill a big saw hole into it. Took me literally 10minutes just to drill ONE qtr" hole w a hammer drill and masonry bit.

This is the problem I have except it's a stud instead of a pipe. What do I do then?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
If the stud is metal, it likely is not a load bearing wall, and thus the metal stud is just there to hang the drywall on, so you can slice open the drywall, and cut out that small 4" section of the metal stud where th elight box needs to go. If the stud is wood, you MAY be able to do the same thing, only if the wall is known to be a non-load bearing wall. That might be a hard task for a non-engineer or general contractor with experience. So would it be off center too much if you just move the light box over and screw it to the stud?
@raissahowera1605
@raissahowera1605 4 года назад
@@jeffostroff It would be. This is for a small half bath. The wall is right under the stairs so I'm assuming that wouldn't be load bearing right? I was thinking about using one of those saddle boxes they use for fans but wasn't sure.
@jeffostroff

@@raissahowera1605 If the wall is right under the stairs, it is probably a load bearing wall, supporting the stairs. If your studs are thin metal, then it is not a load bearing wall. LOL, yes we had to edit it down for time. The important thing was the pipe in the back of the hole requiring us to get that super thin outlet box, and to make sure you don't let the box touch the copper pipe, because dissimilar metals touching causes corrosion. So we tapconned wood blocks on either side of the pipe, and mounted the outlet box to the wood blocks to prevent it from touching the pipe.

I have a similar situation (having to move elec box) but have not yet cut into the drywall where the new fixture "should" go. It would be good to know, if I discover plumbing in that area. It is a violation to have 2 wires on the ground screw. You should have pigtailed your new ground with the other bare grounds and used a wire nut. You damn sure should have used a wire nut on the grounds anyways.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
Don't know if you noticed, but that's how they wired the entire condo, all the bare grounds twisted together with no wiring nut. The reason why it's a violation of code to have more than one wire ont he screw is because if 2 seperate ground wires are on the same screw and you remove one for some reson, you could be taking out another ciruit. Well the thing is in this bathroom, all those grounds are the same circuit on the same circuit breaker. So the ceiling fan, which this routes through this outlet can, and the wall light switch, and the GFCI outlet in the bathroom are all on the same circuit. I woould have added a wiring nut, but that 1/2" can was just too thin, not enough space to work with. You would nto beleive the effort it tool to get that bracket screwed ontot he can, so we did not want to chance overstuffing.

What if I don't have enough wire
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Jason, if you don't have enough wire, you're in a bind. But you can add wire onto the end of the old wire, but you'll have to put the connection inside an outlet box with a plate access from the wall as required by National Electric Code. "Hidden junctions" are not allowed by code, very bad fire hazard. All wires have to end in an accessible fixture. Another choice is can you snake a new Romex cable from the switch to the light outlet box? that would solve your problem, and you won't be dealing with code issues then. There's been times I had to cut 4 or 5 holes in the wall to feed Romex cables up a wall, around corners, drill holes through studs, etc. Just patch up the drywall afterwards. We do it all the time. Remember if you have metal studs, they already have holes in the studs that you must insert those plastic yellow Universal Snap-In Bushings, as required by code so the Romex does not get caught on the edges of the sharp metal stud and get sliced open. Let us know what you end up doing, this could help others as well.

Are you a professional electrician? I don’t think placing electric over a water pipe is a good idea. I’d move the water.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
There is nothing wrong with placing the outlet can there over the pipe, as the pipe is sealed, no danger of ever seeing water. You are infinitely more likely to see water from the sink faucet below to get into the electrical outlet or switch by the sink, that is where you should direct your fears. I would not have placed that can over a soldered joint in the pipe just in case the might fail. The can and the pipe are not touching, the can is mounted to the 2 wood blocks on either side of the pipe, which create a space between the pipe and the can. Feel free to find for me the exact paragraph in the National Electric Code book that for bids this. Also, moving the pipe is a much more difficult option. First, the pipe is coming up through this wall from the cement slab floor below, then continues through the cement slab ceiling into the condo above this unit. Cutting and moving this pipe would require soldering several 90 degree elbows, plus we have to file permission with the condo association 48 hours prior to work being done, and they have to post a notice in the elevator warning other residents the water will be turned off for an undetermined amount of time on the day you will actually perform this.

Ideally your professional bathroom designers will want to put that overhead light like you see there, along with two sconce lights on either side of the mirror at eye level. But not everybody can have the perfect design scenario and so this method works just fine.
