fr, usb drives are getting so damn cheap nowadays there's really no excuse not to be able to do this. I only buy 3.0 128gb now just because they are so cheap. anything smaller then that is a huge waste of money.

Mike, just found this video and it was exactly what I was looking for. Can I assume that this also works with moving other folders in "This PC" like pictures, videos, desktop etc? I need to move these from my SSD to 2 TD internal D drive as Carbonite will only back-up ONE internal HD and my DDS is only 512gb. Really want the larger internal drive back-up.

quick little 10gb boost to my 100gb boot drive. not too bad, not too bad at all. I went a step further and just moved everything in my quick access bar including desktop on my second drive. man this was really helpful!!

@@djempathie.9889 Don't see why you couldn't but you have to think that's a lot of read/writes on the usb stick if you do use one I'd probably keep a backup incase the first one fails. might be worth just upgrading your ssd.

Nice and clear video! I messed a little bit up with these folders while trying to do this, before watching the video but the process was basically the same. Thing is that OdeDrive user folders were like the main folders when you open the file explorer and was kinda confusing. Plus, if I tried to move them I can't, they are stored in, for instance, "C:\Users\username\OneDrive\Documentos". Is there a way to restore these to fix this, maybe creating them again?

think it is problem best to turn off onedrive first and reboot so you can move the "real" user folders then after you can turn on one drive and maybe get onedrive to monitor the new redirected folders

@@mikesunboxing Thanks, yeah I just uninstalled onedrive, 'cause there was no clear option to turn it off when right clicking it but the paths to the folders were still there.

Thanks so much for this walk through! Just wondering; after redirecting my files like this, I noticed the two files seem to be mirroring each other. In my case, I redirected my Documents folder to a D drive (external drive) and added content directly in to it. But I still show a Documents folder in This PC which now has the same content. Should this be happening? Is there a way to fix that?

that is a link to the redirected files, if you right click and look at properties it should be pointing to the redirected folder

i use a lumix G7 or G80 with the 12-60mm kit lens, which is a fair bit sharper than the 14-44mm that is often supplied. the lighting is a pair of mountdog LED softboxes and the camera is in v-log with sharpness up 1 edited in adobe premiere 15 (just out) and exported as 1080 youtube profile with extra detail enabled and bump up the 16Mbits to 20 - 24Mbits to add a little detail, hope this helps

not quite so simple as the programs have registry entries, some software programs claim to be able move them, but i have not had much luck with it in the past

I tried this with the documents folder, but I forgot to make a folder within the new drive location before hitting OK. So now my entire HDD (which already had a lot of stuff on it) became the documents folder. I can't send it back to the C Drive either. What do I do?

not sure sorry, i would imagine that would involve duplicating the folder so if the secondary location was not available the primary could be used for login into preferences etc, much like a roaming profile on a windows domain

Isn't this what the video is about? You're changing Windows' pointers to another drive, so essentially, you've moved your user's folders to a separate drive.

@@mikesunboxing - note MURAHT, you make NO reference to who you are in this video. Are you a user doing this to yourself? Are you an administrator on the PC? Doing it to yourself or to another user; the former, I presume. NB We are NOT ALL ADMINISTRATORS. For safety reasons, many of us use administrators to administer our computers, and for everyday operations we use a user account. The attack surface is reduced. Likewise, 20 years doing it this way... We're not in Windows 95 anymore. Recall the image of Wiley Coyote, or maybe Bugs, sawing off the tree branch ...while sitting on the out end. Can a user, all users everywhere, really up-end themselves while the profile is active and move everything, open files and all? In 20... years I've yet to find anyone who addresses this. PS My folders don't have the Location tab. People here are asking. 21st May '23

i found this, it might help? Possible workaround In one such case, the user moved their data (in your case presumably one problematic folder) to a safe temporary location, relocated their Documents (it happened to be their Documents folder- in your case the Desktop). So once you have relocated your desktop, then try copying back the folder.

Does this move of your download folder location still cause windows updates to fail as this article suggests? www.zdnet.com/article/dont-move-your-windows-user-profiles-folder-to-another-drive/ : Microsoft does not recommend that you change the location of the user profile directories or program data folders. [emphasis added] "Only in a test environment" seems pretty straightforward to me. Don't try this on your production machines. Unfortunately, the third-party sites that recommend this tweak don't mention this caveat. In fact, they typically don't even link to the documentation. And the next setting is even more explicit: Caution Using this setting to redirect folders to a drive other than the system volume blocks upgrades. Using ProfilesDirectory to point to a directory that is not the system volume will block SKU upgrades and upgrades to future versions of Windows. ... The servicing stack does not handle cross-volume transactions, and it blocks upgrades. [emphasis added]

i don't think this is correct, although depending on the folders in question it may cause unforeseen issues. I have had my downloads folder re directed for many years and have never had a update fail for this reason, at least as far as i can tell. I have also previously re directed my documents folder when preping a system change or HHD upgrade etc and have not experienced any issues, but thanks for the heads up
