I’ve been doing pottery for 40+ years on and off. Now retired at 65, I have my own studio. I’m enjoying your videos, love your English with your Netherlandish accent and have learned a couple new tricks and techniques from you. Notably, the use of the micro-fiber dish mat to clean pot bottoms. Thank you from Northern California/Nevada. Keep up the excellent RU-vid videos. They are much appreciated!

Amazing glazes love the striping variation you show, have you tried holds or slow cooling in your firing schedules. I do a lot testing with holding at various temperatures on the way up and slow cooling on the way down to promote crystal formations and give more depth to the glazes. Between 900 to 1100C is a good place to start, there is so much info on crystalline glaze and crystal formation in glazing that is helpful for more than crystalline glazing.

Thank you! I have tried different holds, but I'm actually quite happy with how things turn out without a hold at the moment. But it's definitely an interesting topic to learn more about!

I always love watching your channel and seeing all the different glazing techniques. When I’m glazing at my class, I’ve never used more than three coats. In this video you applied a lot more coats. I was told in pottery class if we used more coats, there was more of a chance of the glaze running. But it sure didn’t in your case. Can you explain why this is? Were we told incorrectly or is it something else, maybe the type of glaze used? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you!
@caldervanandel
@caldervanandel 2 года назад
Thank you! When you only use one glaze it's best to just use 3 coats, but when you do a glaze combination like this it's possible to use more coats. This does indeed make the chance of the glaze running bigger. So with a combination like this I would not glaze all of the coats all the way to the bottom. And it also depends on the glaze, with a combination like this it's important to use a glaze that doesn't run as a base, in this case Obsidian. I have tried multiple combinations, and sometimes the glaze gets very runny, and runs of the piece, onto the kiln shelf. Unfortunately the only way to find out if a glaze runs is to test it. If you want to prevent the glaze from running you could also fire at a bit of a lower temperature. When I fire at 1200°C some glazes don't run at all, even though they do at 1220°C I hope this helps!

@caldervanandel
@caldervanandel Год назад
How fast the kiln reaches the temperature does have an impact on the glazes. When the kiln takes longer the colors become a bit darker, in my experience. If your kiln takes long you could also fire at 1200 degrees :)

Hi ! I am quite new in pottery and I love your way to explain things ! I would have juste some more questions about the different glazes you are using : in France, we have 2 types: glaze (enamel?) or slip coating (engobe) Can you help me about this ? Thank you 😉
@caldervanandel
@caldervanandel 2 года назад
Thank you! Enamel is the same as normal glazes, like the ones I use for the northern light glazing. You can use one collor or layer them like in this video. Engobe works the same as underglaze, you can use it to paint something and do sgraffito. To make the engobe food safe you have to apply clear glaze (enamel) on top of it. I hope this helps😊

Hello, great video thank you! Beautiful combos 😍 do you test your dinnerware to check it is safe for food use? All a bit confusing any help would be great! Thanks
@caldervanandel
@caldervanandel Год назад
Thank you so much! No, I don't test it, but I only mix the glazes on the outside of the mugs and I use one glaze on the inside, so that I'm sure it's food safe. But I think that most amaco glazes are safe to be used together, but there are indeed different ways to test if it is food safe, but I unfortunately don't know much about that.

I fire to 600 degrees Celsius in 5 hours, and then as fast as possible to 1220 degrees Celsius😊

I unfortunately got a copyright claim for the music I used, so the sound was removed, but I made a new and improved video, the link is in the description!

I think that Smokey Merlot ruined every those gorgeous colors, especially that intense blue.
