An in depth look at the ollie. 5 steps that can take you from no ollie to a solid one and an explanation of ollie timing. Each step exercises a foundational aspect of the ollie that you will later be able to use when putting the ollie together.
I came up with this method to help new skaters learn to ollie easier. And I used it to learn switch ollies/nollies. It really worked for me, and I think it can work for you too!
0:00 intro
2:10 step 1
3:00 foot positioning
4:18 step 2
6:44 step 3
8:14 step 4
9:34 step 5
10:11 ollie timing
11:04 final thoughts
I hope you stick around if you enjoyed the video.

Hello! Someone pointed out that I reversed the written stances at 3:05. The visual is correct, but it should be left foot front in regular stance and right foot front in goofy stance. (I think that I was going to write back foot and got them mixed up. I hate using left and right when talking about stances in general because I think it’s confusing for a lot of people. You’ll mostly see “front foot” and “back foot” in my content 😂 Still, hope you enjoyed the video! Happy Ollie-ing

How do I get high Ollie’s while pushing my foot though because when I try to push my foot it only gets an inch off the ground
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 2 года назад
@@opgamer9296 Hours and hours and months of practice is the real answer. Ollies suck because it takes a lot of time and phases to work through in order to get our bodies to do what they need to/be strong enough to do what they need to etc. So many things (touching the tail to the ground when popping, not bringing the back foot up, not actually pushing the nose forward, not bringing the front foot up to the nose at all--only the bolts etc) can all shorten the height of the ollie..so, it's hard to know. Often it's just needing more time to get our body to do what the brain knows it needs to...

Sarah's channel is definitely the best skateboarding tutorial channel on RU-vid! She mentions the small little details that other tutorial missed ... And she breaks down each steps into small exercises which definitely makes it a lot easier for learning! Love this channel, keep it up Sarah!! Thanks!!! :)

I think your approach to skating is very methodical and breaks things down into their components. I’ve now been skating a year now at 56 years old and loving it and I skate transition and surf skating the most. I really want to get my Ollie sorted so I’m going to try this approach. Keep up the good work, I love your stuff.

Love your method steps, i agree that a lot of tutorials seems to miss steps. Something i have found when I'm teaching friends is having them pop the tail and land on the board without doing the whole front foot slid. kinda like a hippy jump with a pop. This helps get that ankle muscle memory without worrying about the whole front foot mess yet.
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott 3 года назад
That's great advice. I know exactly what you mean because I actually considered that for this method in the beginning. I did it quite a few times, but the only reason I didn't recommend it to a general audience is that it did seem a bit difficult with a chance of slipping. Even I slipped once. I would totally recommend it to someone who was really good at riding already though and super comfortable jumping on their board! 😃💪

Very true about really pushing the front foot forward. My ollie got WAY better last year when i was trying to learn "ollie norths". It made me realize how far you can push your foot forward before it goes past the nose, and how much more effective it is to fling your foot loosely, and straight, into your nose. It also helps me to watch my front foot. The back one just has to pop hard, so focusing on my front foot seemed to really help me understand what was happening with each ollie.

I do really like videos like this one. When PROs explain you how to ollie and all that things, they judge from their perspective of simplicity of everything. When not a PRO explains how to ollie - she explains it literally how it will go for you because you go through exactly the same fears and mistakes

Of all the tutorials on the Ollie, hands down, your video is the best. You are a far superior teacher. Your teaching method is infinitely far superior. It’s more technical and less flash and spectacle. Don’t defer to Braille, while AK is great for some things, he’s “spectacle” and less information. Just saying “first try!!!!” Is great for affirmation it’s not helping people who really want to learn the techniques. Why you don’t have as many subscribers as Braille is an injustice but I’m glad I found your channel. Thank you.

Well, thank you! I'm really stoked the you enjoyed this method and how I tried to teach the ollie. This approach is definitely my style. I love to break things down, look for the physics if I can and try to find similar movements to work on individual parts of a different trick. It has made a huge difference in my skating, which is why I wanted to share it! So, I am always glad to hear the method resonated with someone! 😃

After about 6 months after a broken leg from an attempted ollie, this video helped me get a rocket ollie, my mistake was not to slam my foot all the way to the ground when popping, I know the slide and everything, my back foot was never catching the board when I popped, I figured I wasn’t popping enough to where I can lift the back foot up, but after seeing to lift it up halfway from popping, thank you so much!!!
@SarahParkMatott
@SarahParkMatott Год назад
ah, I'm glad to hear that! Yeah, as you get better and better your foot can get closer to the ground, but a solid pinch is such a barrier to learning the ollie in my experience. Stoked you're now well on your way 💪

Wonderful! Thank you for this. I''m about 7 months in new, and until I could climb a curb the old way, I didn't even want to try an ollie, and this is the best break down that doesnt amount to your other video about the worst advice you'll get...which is very true. I might add though for them with family jewels, to be careful not to sack yourself when working the pop. O_O!

Wow, great tutorial! Really glad to have some intermediate steps to practice while I give my poor knees a break from jumping so much. Today at the skatepark I realized how bad I am at popping my board with my back foot. When I first tried it, my board would go every which way, and it took me a while to get a clean pop that I could catch!

@SarahParkMatott 2 года назад
Yes 🙌 go easy on the knees. I learned that lesson the hard way 😂 But I’m glad you liked those steps! It’s wild how sometimes breaking those steps up you can really work on tiny details that you might not have realized need work 😂 keep shredding 💪

@SeeSawMassacre
@SeeSawMassacre Год назад
One tip i've learned is to pop with your toes at the center of the tail. I used to pop more toward the toe side of the tail (the pocket), and it made my board spin a little backside and didn't pop as hard. I'd say put it in the center of the tail, and work on popping straight down, hard (with bent legs) and don't try to do huge ollies until you can do relaxed, smaller ones. I too had to learn to pop my tail consistently before i could even worry about leveling the board out more fully.

So refreshing to listen to a calming video on this. These are awesome steps and I would add one more step for when you are ready to practice rolling Ollie’s (at least this helped me). What I did was put the board aside and stand as if I was on my board ready to Ollie. Then I would practice a sort of lunging side jump, leading with my front foot. I’m not sure if I am articulating clearly but just practicing this really helped me.

I love your approach, it’s great how you break the mechanics down into individual practical steps and them overlay them to show the sequence of actions as one seamless motion. Great work Sarah!
