In this video I will take you through all of the recommended settings to optimize your Ubiquiti Unifi WiFi setup so that you can get the best speed, reliability and performance from it to keep your Smart Home WiFi network running like a dream. We go through all of the recommended settings that I apply and setup with every Ubiquiti Unifi WiFi setup that I do and install and these are generally the most settings I found to work best for the majority of installs, of course with some individual tweaking!

Just adding this as was looking for WiFi AI for AGES to turn it off but it's been renamed to 'Channel Optimisation' (Settings > WiFi > Nightly Channel Optimisation). It took me so much googling to find so hoping this comment helps someone else out! Lewis, maybe you could pin this or add to the description? Thanks!

I really want to compliment you on your organization of this script. Very well done and explained but still high level. You really hit on good moments where you want to focus the messaging vs. allow the user to make their own decisions along with just enough information to help them understand what to expect when they play with those settings.

Awesome video and just what I needed. I'd done some of it across my UDM and the 3 AP's but some devices weren't connecting to the nearest AP choosing to connect to another one quite far from them. After following these steps clients are making the right choices about where to connect to. Great job!! Now all I need is for you to do the room-assistant video. I've got it all working across 6 Pi's apart from presence detection so looking forward to that one 😎

Great video and very good recommendations which are way more sensible than the usual “set to max bandwidth and highest power because thats best”! Your settings will work great in real world scenarios and focus on a stable and good throughput rather than how do I get the highest throughput rate in my speedtest. So thank you for putting this out.

This is a great general video. In the over 12 months since this was released, Unifi have done a fair few updates to the "New UI" and now you dont need to go to the legacy UI to disable optimisation and the power level and some other features can also be changed in the global WiFi settings instead of needing to do so individually. Other than that, this video is still very relevant and is a great starting place to start optimising your WiFi. 20MHz in 2.4 is not just best practice, but it is also good WiFi etiquette. Using 80MHz in 5GHz is acceptable, but using 160MHz would be considered being rude. 40MHz is usually plenty of bandwidth though.

Great video, I am late to the party but I'm about to order a bunch of UniFi stuff so I can get rid of my Netgear consumer mesh (that'll do as a guest WiFi perhaps) we have a reasonably big house with lots of double-bricked walls so I'm going for a bunch of wired APs throughout with two external APs as well. The Unifi system seems solid and with your great advice and some planning I'm sure we will get better coverage. Great with PoE when installing, instead of heaps of adapters plugged in everywhere👍 We live in the Swedish countryside and the 4G (don't even mention 5G😊) connectivity is really bad so we rely on WiFi for phone calls too. Thanks again for making me (and my house) smarter!

Wow! This video was awesome! I always love your very helpful video's regarding to Home Assistant, so I was happily surprised to see this one. Finally a video from someone who understands, that home users of Unify have other requirements than business users. I just moved from my USG to a UDM Pro. I have 4 AP's, 1x 16p-150w switch and some flex mini poe switches...(and got rid of the Unify cameras and replaced them with Reolink 🙈). I tried some of your settings on one AP just now, and...my wifi speedtest result with Wifiman tripled! I wasn't even aware of band steering being 'off' ... Oops! So there you go! I changed the Transmit Power as well. I will have your settings on all my AP's soon👍 It would be great to see another post about setting several SSID's for smarthome devices as well. I want to implement that, but don't know how...just like creating/ having vlans ... Any chance to do this or forward me to useful documentation for home users? Thanks again my friend, keep up the good work!

Looks like there might be some good tips here, but unfortunately recent updates to the UniFi controller software (v.7.1.66 as of this writing) have made your first two steps moot, as those settings have been removed from both the classic and new UI. Either that or they've been moved and so well hidden that they are impossible to find. Missing features are: 'Advanced' in the new UI - that section is simply not there, at all. It's gone. Under the classic UI the "Auto-optimize" option is likewise completely absent. So, no idea how to even see what the current state of those features is, let alone change them. Bummer.

Great Video, I have been running unifi happily for many years, but the recent 5.x strain of firmware has caused me a ton of issues. Going to try your settings and see how they pan out, I do have around 150 wifi devices (mainly IoT) spread across 5 APs, so reasonably dense, then there is also the Hue Zigbee and Zigbee2mqtt networks both on 2.4ghz - would be great to see a video of how to optimise these to minimise interference :) Keep up the good work, always enjoy your videos!

I tried following this as much as possible, but the newer Unifi controller V7.1.68 and Cloud key firmware V1.1.19 appears to have eliminated some of the setting or changed the names. Wi-Fi was slower after following this instructional video. Overlapping channels in Mesh mode and auto power mode with nighttime channel optimization seems best for two APs but still slower than I expect. An updated video would be great.

I don't recommend disabling meshing. As long as the ethernet cable is connected, meshing will not happen at all. However, if you have a sudden issue with cabling somewhere, the isolated part of network will be re-connected automatically through an AP-to-AP bridge, and keep the (degraded) network up & running!
@VRietySociety
@VRietySociety 3 года назад
From working with hundreds of unifi setups (clicked on this video mostly out of curiosity) It is my honest opinion to leave meshing off because it causes more problems in general than it solves and i only use it where absolutely necessary.

You picked a bad channel. Monitor several times a day how channels are used, write them down, and then, select the convenient one. I did my explanation on another question, I'll paste it here: Auto-optimize can run on a regular basis, at that point you probably don't have the "normal environment". Let say that you auto-update at 9am, if in that moment your house is empty or no neighbours using wifi, auto optimize will work based on that, if the rest of the day is totally crowded or heavy used, your settings will be fucked up the rest of the day. Same applies on the opposite. You have to dig a little bit on this if you want the best air stats. Auto optimize is ok for those who can't or don't know how to do this.

I have a nano HD and even within five feet of the AP I get less than 10 megabits per second downloads on an iPhone 13 Pro. Uploads are around 40 megabit. 5 GHz speeds are fine, but there’s also another problem - my iPhone and my other 5GHz capable devices will often drop to the 2.4 GHz network if they haven’t been used for awhile; for example I’ll set my iPhone down on the MagSafe charger and lock the screen, pick it up 15 minutes later, and bam - it’s on the 2.4 GHz network now. If I go into the settings on that device and turn the wifi off and back on again, oh what do you know - it connects back to the 5 GHz network! I would really love any advice or insight about this as it’s really annoying and I’m tearing my fkn hair out trying to figure out what is going on. I’ve tried changing the transmit power and channels and none of that makes any difference at all.
@ananamusly

Sounds like you need a rf scan and proper layout planning. I think you might have multiple access points on the same channels and that's creating interference. Best to do an rf scan with an app like netspot or wifiman on an android and make sure channels are setup to avoid interference

@@ananamusly Muh dude, you can use the AP itself and perform an RF scan directly from unifi. It will tell you what the RF environment looks like. You can also set it to do nightly scans and automatically pick the best channels every night. I went through all this. Nothing worked to fix the issue.

What do you mean by control from a mobile app? Clients work on this on a radio level, apps 99% of the time don't know (or want to know) more than "has internet" or "is connected to data/wifi"

Just little stupid question, I'm not profi in that, but 2.4G 20Hz and 5G 40Hz take speed to half. Maybe I do something wrong but my ul6 lite 5g 40Hz speed is 587 Mbps in 5g 80Hz jump to 1200Mbps. That I just confuse rest setup is great.

Not a stupid question at all :) you are right that that it will limit the max throughput, but ask yourself if you are actually able to achieve more than 600mbps in real life anyways over WiFi? And if you are, can you get more than 1 meter away from the AP before it drops off? But that's why I said in the video to experiment with 80mhz width :) hope that helps

something nobody talks about is having wifi/network speeds match ISP pipe. What's the use of supersonic speeds locally, when virtually all the traffic is for/from internet, bottlenecked by those speeds. you cant magically get faster/better performance on wifi, without a suitably large ISP pipe.

@EverythingSmartHome

1 6 and 11 don't really allow for any overlap which is why they are the better ones to choose if possible

I think one of us is misinterpreting that chart. All channels overlap with other channels. 1, 6, and 11 don't overlap with each other, but that doesn't make them any better than 2 and 7, or 3 and 8, etc. In fact, 1 overlaps with 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Regarding band steering ... If anyone does the bellow you don't need it .. If you create 2 sepat ssids .. you can create one 5ghz and one 2.4 ghz .. with this being said you make sure whatever is 5g goes to only the 5g one and the iot stay in the 2.4 .. Also roaming is important if you have 2 AP's .. also having 2 AP's is flexible for maintanence anytime as everything will roam ...

Why not just uncheck auto-optimize and auto-updates on original install of router? You should explain channel width and reasons why using wider causes more chances for interference =P otherwise decent.
@brunobergami6482
@brunobergami6482 2 года назад
Auto-optimize can run on a regular basis, at that point you probably don't have the "normal environment".

I may be delving a bit deep on your vid (really great info btw) but I am learning trial by error and am truly curious. 🙂

@EverythingSmartHome 3 года назад
Ah, there is a few reasons for that, number 1 is that it can be very overwhelming for some people when you start to talk about those things when a lot of people just want a quick description and mostly they just want to know the settings, it can very easily turn this into a 30 or 40 minute video, but I understand some people like yourself want more information. The other reason is like I mentioned in the beginning that I am certainly not an expert at how wireless or radio frequencies work, networking yes but the specifics of radio transmission definitely not, so in my head I have an idea of how I THINK it works but it's probably not the best explanation and for all I know, could be wrong and so I wouldn't want to give out information that I'm not qualified to give out if that makes sense? I get what you mean though for sure

I switched my latest gen UDM Pro and UAP-LR for a single ASUS RT-AC86U. Fewer settings but way better performance. Even after tweaking the UDM Pro for a whole day I could not get above 500 Mbps throughput and the range was terrible (10-20 Mbps in the far side of the house). With the standard settings on the ASUS I got 580 Mpbs in the connecting room and 400 Mbps in the far side of the house. If I had watched this video back then I may have been able to get decent throughput and range and have kept the UDM Pro. I just hoped it would have better default settings so I wouldn’t need an engineering degree to have decent WiFi. Oh well, I saved some money and still have decent WiFi despite not being part of the Unifi family 😉

Interesting you bring this comparison up. I’m currently trying to tweak my new UDM Pro SE with 3 UniFi APs (U6-LR, U6 Lite and a U5-AP Pro) to try to eliminate my need for a second SSID that my Asus RT-AC86U puts out (it’s in AP mode after formerly being my router). The Asus delivers 730 mbps and my UniFi APs more like 250-425 mbps). I have them all nicely spaced out and each wired in a 3600 sq ft home. My internet plan is 1200 mbps, my modem supports 2.5 Gbps, and my UDM Pro SE says my wired connection is a tad over 1400 mbps (thanks for the generous provisioning, Comcast). Something in me just thinks the Asus gaming router won’t be beaten in sheer speed numbers, but I’d love to be proven wrong. I do love that it just performs without me tweaking settings, but I’m determined to figure out the ideal settings for my UniFi set-up.

Smart device (Iot) SSID shoudl also be (different) VLAN-backed. This will limit the network broadcast domain and keep these devices from poking around on the other networks. Great video otherwise!

Having 2.4 and 5 GHz mixed in the same SSID is a mistake when you understand how wifi works. Lazy setting we call it.
@brunobergami6482
@brunobergami6482 2 года назад
Modern clients know about same SSID on different bands and make a smart management. If you separate SSIDs, you will restrict devices to: a) a crowded band b) a distant band c) a bad performing band. People is too stupid to understand which devices should go on a 5Ghz band and which not, not to mention that roaming devices can change their need according to air stats. And as this is a entry level guide, makes sense to make this recommendation. Big brands also recommend this setting, as Apple even on their own products.

@MrTolcher

The wifi AI actually does know better than you doing it manually.. its goal is to improve your wireless score so it changes your power and channel settings automatically on a daily bases and considering environmental are constantly changing around i.e your neighbors wifi channels it switches you to the best unused channel or power settings so its not blasting everything causing interference. your manual "best settings" could be all undone the very next day due to neighbors changing their channels etc. in terms of the other settings youve covered them very well.
