Terrific advice that reminds me of a quote from Gustave Flaubert, "Be as regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be as violent and original in your creative work."

In this one Jordan really wove a detailed and nuanced guide for achieving creative success, each sentence is packed full of info. This took me almost 3 hours to write. Summary: Are you thinking about messing around with complicated and dangerous matters? Before you begin, get your multi-faceted life stabilized by protecting yourself from instability in each area. This stability allows you to seize more risks and opportunities. (Leading to success) How to increase stability by decreasing instability: -Decrease neuroticism by increasing conscientiousness. -Organize life with traditional/conservative values. Ways to increase conscientiousness: 1. Clean room. 2. Organize life. 3. Get a routine. 4. Wake up at the same time. 5. Go to bed at the same time. 6. Establish disciplined habits. 7. Use a schedule (Hold to your schedule not rigidly like a tyrant but consider it as a confidant and adviser.) 8. Design a 7 day week. 8. (Expanded) Schedule items that: - Are meaningful and productive. - Make life feel justified. - Make progress towards goals daily. 9. Discipline. Note: Daily progress, made easier with habits and discipline, adds up over time, especially a lifetime. ____________________________

nope. someone to love...in order to be happy? that someone better be yourself. Be "the self-helping man" that Emerson spoke of; fill your own cup. Relying on others for your own positive emotions, in any form, is not wise or healthy.

Then I let a mate move in who's a film maker - suddenly having this crazy person in my house set me into being my father and caring about everything and being more ordered. +Bee Dee Bee Rationality led to Nihilism, Nihilism to be prone to ideologies, and the Germans were accepting Nazism, just like the Soviets accepted Communism. People raised without religion become prone to Nihilism, not Marxism. Which side you may end up in determines your openness, I'll assume, if you become Nihilistic and fall for an ideology.

This is what I'm trying to do. I'm creative and neurotic, but low in conscientiousness. I keep a list of to-dos that I tick off everyday to make-up for that low conscientiousness. So far so good. I still get distracted a lot, but seeing that I'm able to tick off more than half of my tasks, I think that's decent progress. It's hard to go back to routine when something interrupts the schedule like vacations and meet-ups though. )':

This is spot on. I don't think this necessarily only applies to the extremely creative people but also just to people looking to do something creative with their time i.e. Blogging, RU-vid, Dancing, Furniture Making, Acting. Your chance to make money specifically from those endeavours is very low however they can benefit yourself and your financial success in many ways. The importance of being structured and setting aside specific time to just focus on those thing cannot be stressed enough. If only for the potential social aspect of being part of something creative and learning something new, I think everyone should make some time for these things, it gives non-creatives a voice where they perhaps wouldn't have one aside from their career/profession.

+HAL Well Jocko isn't the greatest speaker in an academic or showman context obviously. But with a point such as "if you want to improve your life, you need to develop discipline" you can do nothing wrong by repeating it until people get it. Because if you say it once most people might agree with the statement, but wont think enough about it to realize how important it (very likely) is to their own situation.

This video/question was a great help to me. I am very high in Openness and pretty high in neuroticism as well. But I've also come to understand that I'm rather low in conscientiousness as well so over the past couple of months I've been working to become more conscientious by doing things the right way and not looking for shortcuts or ways to do less mundane work than my peers in any given situation and it certainly does seem to be quelling my neuroticism which is very nice. I still have work to do in that area and in being more schedule oriented but this advice so far has proven very useful to me.

Thank you very much. Really helpful. I was constantly thinking about the happiness of my narcissistic/toxical parents recently. At a point that my bedroom was a mess. Even the book I was reading talked about narcissistic. I wanted to find answer to feel at ease with my parents. But I just getting more en more nervous. Then I read a Manga from a author I like a lot (Inio Asano) and I rediscovered what it mean to take time for myself. I was relaxed after reading his book. And this good feeling make me clean my bedroom. So I totally agree about the importance of cleaning your environment. Taking care of ourself is really important too.

Alchemy man.... its more than just some dudes in a lab. At its core, alchemy teaches transformation on all levels. No wonder Jordan has trouble explaining it.. it can be so esoteric its hard to bring back symbols from the realm. Even intellects such as Peterson and Jung feel Alchemy holds some sort of key. This is why my mind is blown.. Why mention it all? Brilliant.

1. Try to maintain a very stable PT job, at least. Can't be creative if you're homeless. Ask Ryan Larkin. 2. Quit driving. You'll never get laid, but you'll save a ton of money and avoid the endless time-sucking quagmires of cops and courts. I'm always stunned by the number of highly creative people who deliberatey cut driving out of their lives, Norm MacDonald and Jeff Hanneman come to mind.

I love his advice. The only thing I find a little annoying of Jordan, with all due respect, and probably something bad for most of his audience who generally don't have his language and cultural level, is that it is too intense and he doesn't stop talking at all (just like Chris Nolan's movies, which are exhausting): People need pauses... silence, to think about the last phrase. Jordan always speaks without stops, he's pretty fast inside his mind, and his phrases are really hard to analize sometimes, or to even understand fully. I seriously think his audience catches probably 40% of what he says... if he wants to be educational, he should have a "calmed" dialogue to let us integrate each part of the dialog. Some of us listen to this while drawing, for example, so the "pause the video" solution should not be a solution. His alumni in the university were probably a little bit confused after a lecture.

For my part, I enjoy having the routine so that the mundane things don't eat up brain cycles, that way when something comes up I have the brain energy to spend on solving a problem or keeping my emotions in check rather than just collapsing or feeling overburdened. I think with any 'craft' that mastering things step by step is what unlocks your greatest potential and mastering your daily routine is a step on that path. Or maybe I'm full of shit lol but it does seem that way to me as a pianist and as a gamer.

Oh now he's a composer? People are worshipping this guy. He gets too "youth pastor" for me. I agree with what he says much of the time, but it doesn't go far enough, or specific enough. And he openly admits the end game is "have a baby and have a family and believe in things that aren't true and have a hobby". I just..... I can't justify these things in my heart and mind. I ultimately don't understand what he means. Here in LI, NY, everyone gives up their individuality and virtue to live in a strange mix of leftism and traditional conservatism...basically, the end goal is to be a consumer with a parking-lot-house with tattoos, signaling power and jealousy to justify your social existence. it makes me literally want to die. I need to move. I need to find somewhere I can just have one or two dimensions of wiggle room and support. Peterson never says, "maybe change your location". He started being critical of the left, but then says they're "more open".... wha? Which leftists are open to new, non-leftist ideas? I'm not exaggerating, I don't know any. Also - if he says creative people should have the rest of their life as conservative/solid as possible (I agree with this by the way), then isn't he proving that "open" people WOULD end up more "conservative"? According to his own advice, he's contradictory.... these kinds of contradictions frustrate me. Big fan of the guy, but more and more contradictions reveal themselves as I try to sort my own life out.

I'm extremely high in creativity, NY jingle writer professionally, but troves of albums in the rock and jazz genres (loosely) and I compose hours a day. I'm also a visual artist etc etc, also very philosophical. probably a little high in neuroticism, but I'm definitely very high in conscientiousness. I can't find any resolution for my own depressed outlook on career and life, besides maybe leaving society and dedicating myself to music. Lyme disease has made any outside efforts within daily life difficult. People don't accept Lyme disease in the modern world, and the creative music business also died right in front of me, so I have to write terrible music for terrible corporate clients just to get by. I live among unethical people who win by force and numbers. The end goal is to become a consumer who can make others jealous. I see cultural degradation everywhere I look - the things that made life livable and ethical, for example having an active rock music scene, have gone one by one. There was at least a reason to live in civilization.... the only way I could justify joining in with society any longer would be to actively try and change it, bring back rock culture, etc. But Peterson says you're stupid to do that (odd that he does it himself, but ok) and just "join in" and be Jesus Christ if things get too tough. What? If I have to be Superman to get through living in society, what's the point of society? I think culture and civilization should generally be positive, or aiming to improve. I'm having a very hard time in my life with this idea, and JP's advice is confusing and actually toxic feeling. I need more specifics.... his general approach of lumping everyone in categories, as if every mind, time, and place follows the same rules runs counter to his evolutionary approach. I just can't square the guy's contradictions, anyone else "grok" my struggle? Genuinely putting in a lot of effort to figure things out - I have a very high IQ - bought two "self authoring" programs for my partner and I - but I still just can't shake my understanding that we live in a very difficult time, where living in civilization has emergent, novel problems and it might make sense to get the heck out of dodge or something. I've seen the music industry get destroyed, and no one even sees it yet. I've seen the establishment media become lies and white noise, and after years of complaining among incredulous friends, I'm finally seeing that acknowledged with the advent of online media. But meanwhile, through Lyme, I've had to see the medical system become the same kind of denial-ridden, heavy-regulated disaster (it can't even keep up with new threats from nature), and no one acknowledges that yet either. 50,000 bucks out of pocket (who knows including the insurance money), 10 doctors at least, and no answers, only disrespect. Many things like this happening right now. I thought the point of civilization was to help someone out a little? I don't think it always works well. I think it's a nightmare time in some ways and we could fix it, but we have to talk about it, criticize it. JP started his movement by criticizing the left - now he says, "don't criticize society, just get out there and join in". Doesn't square in my heart, man. The lack of specifics or variation in his advice, too, it's just killing me.

Edward Gibbon This is an excerpt from The Real Frank Zappa Book: JUST FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS: [For being a composer] [1] Declare your intention to create a 'composition.' [2] Start a piece at some time. [3] Cause something to happen over a period of time (it doesn't matter what happens in your 'time hole' -- we have critics to tell us whether it's any good or not, so we won't worry about that part). [4] End the piece at some time (or keep it going, telling the audience it is a 'work in progress'). [5] Get a part-time job so you can continue to do stuff like this. Now I'm pretty sure from reading your comment that you are aware of this. However, maybe one thing that is bothering you is that you are submitting your creative abilities to an industry that sucks and it's probably based on mediocrity? So I think the most important point in the list is number 5. Maybe you could manage to get a job that allows you to "zone out" (i.e. not forcing your creativity) so you can continue to work on your stuff on your free time? Probably a simple job as washing dishes would do. Wouldn't that be a bit similar as leaving society to work on your music without actually having to go away?. As to all the things that bother you from society, man I feel you. And if it is of any help, one thing that helped me was to understand that one has the right to say "fuck them". It is not your moral obligation to carry the burden of all the shit smeared in your society just because you are aware of some of it. It is not your moral obligation to sacrifice your well being in order to try and change it - you probably won't be able to, and even if you were, it would probably destroy you in the way. It is, however, your moral obligation (maybe more your right than your obligation) to not give in and become a mindless zombie, and to not act out the shit that you are aware of in your society. I don't think that would make you happy either. Frank Zappa's biography, his interviews and of course his music also helped me a lot. He is an exemplary figure of a man that was able to live within the parameters of society without giving his talents and integrity away. I don't know all the specifics of your situation so please don't take me wrong - I'm also struggling to figure my shit out. In any case, I wish you good luck, and furthermore, I wish you don't need it. P.S: This poem might be handy in difficult times: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QNrKuABT4Kk.html
