Hi Mary, what is the size of the plastic containers you have in your bugout bag? They look like a good size, but I’m buying online, and I can’t really judge if the containers I’m looking at are a similar size, without knowing either the volume or dimensions. I’m particularly interested in the bigger one.

A leak caused my kitchen ceiling to collapse in 2020. We had to leave the house for 3 months. Thankfully insurance helped to pay for a safe, pet friendly hotel room. But on several occasions during demolition & repair I'd go home &spend a night or 2 to be there for contractors early a.m. No water, no kitchen, no pantry. I was "camping" in my room with a lot of these types of food and gallon sized jugs of water from $ store. Just another example of an emergency where this stuff comes in very handy.

You never know when an accident might happen, beit a fire or natural disaster, causing you to leave your home, and having your own clothing for you & your children is so comforting. ❤ Thank you for your video because you have some awesome items that I've never heard of 😁❤

Mary, what an excellent and timely video. Our neighborhood had to evacuate two years ago due to fire. It was scary and I did not have anything ready to take for an extended stay away from the home. Great suggestions and video Mary. Thank you. A few suggestions I have are… * Try the shelf stable foods that you buy for your bugout bags BEFORE a disaster, this means everyone in the family, especially if you have never eaten them. You certainly don’t want to have to eat something distasteful to you or try and get children/teens to eat something that may be gross to them. * I save rolls of toilet paper when they get near empty. I press them down and place 3 or 4 in sandwich zip bags for each bugout bag. I also have a couple of baggies of them in each vehicle. These come in handy especially when you go to the park or beach and the public bathroom is tp. * I purchase shelf stable milk. There are several options, regular whole, almond, rice and oat. You can find them in the cereal or baking isle depending on the store. They come in individual and family size. I use the larger size for camping and road trips. They don’t need refrigeration until opened.
@jkazzie2521
@jkazzie2521 Год назад
Also look out for soft packaged foods like baked beans, vegetables, and fruit in juice or light syrup. Freeze dried fruit is a good alternative to traditionally dried fruit as it’s lighter in weight. I also recommended a soft muzzle for your dog in case you’re in an evacuation area with lots of other dogs and people. Nervous or excited dogs may bite in those circumstances even if they would not normally do so.

I was in India for a couple of months and learned a lot about survival. I went a week without food and shelter. I was glad to have a water purifier, multivitamins, and medications with me. I was also glad to have a hands free head torch for light, a lightweight hooded HH rain jacket for warmth, and extra socks and underwear. There were other days where all I had to eat were chocolate bars. The sugar (and maybe the caffeine) kept me going. High sugar content is craved when you're not getting much food. I couldn't care less about protein at that time. Hygiene in India was not as we're used to and there is a lot of disease because of it. My whole group was thrilled that I had hand sanitizer for after toileting and before meals. Everyone commented on how nice it was that it smelled good too. Wipes were used daily for wiping the body before bed. I could do a fine job with 3 wipes. Being able to clean dirty feet and ankles, underarms, neck, privates; was refreshing and helped with a good nights sleep. Toilet paper was also very important. Part of prepping for people with pets should include training them well so they obey in strange situations and are calm around strangers and other animals. Also crate training in case they need to be crated, maintaining pet vaccines, and having food, water, bowl and pet waste bags ready for evacuation. And having an emergency dog carrier/sling or drag blanket in case a pet is injured or can't go on.

I lived in Western NC, when a freak snowstorm hit one afternoon. The interstate closed down for almost 18 hrs; the snow came too hard and deep for people to get out and walk anywhere. It was the next afternoon before they were able to get everyone off the interstate to a safe and warm place. Since then, we always carry a winter safety kit. Protein bars, water, emergency blanket, real blanket, extra hat, socks and gloves from the Dollar Tree, plus any personal items like wipes and hand sanitizers. Those are the minimum.

I’m only a few minutes in but want to say this or I will forget 🙄 To individually pack powder drink mix, use a straw, the fat malt straws hold more ! Seal one end, fill with powder and seal other end, label with sharpie. they are easily sealed with a clothes iron, curling iron or even a candle but use a lot of caution using an open flame, the straw melts easily ! Powder milk and chocolate milk powder is a treat and adds protein :) Now I’m 40 min in and she mentions small packs of milk, so the fat straw may be the trick 🤷🏼‍♀️ Blessings

I bought some smoothie straws and cut them to the size of an Altoids tin. Pinch the end with needlenose pliers and heat with a lighter until melted and sealed. I then filled each with different spices, soy sauce, etc. Then pinch the other end and sealed it. Spice tin for cooking. Maybe this could work for your individual powdered milk servings? May take more than one or use the whole straw and put in one of your snap lock containers? I have a Great Dane and I bought her her own bugout bag in the form of a dog backpack/saddlepack. Not big enough to carry all of her needs, but big enough to share the load. Plus it has a handle on top if I need to lift her. Lots of Velcro for patches. The kids at the hospitals love the patches when we visit.

I'd like to add a few items for your Go Bag: toilet paper tablets, which just need a very small amount of water to "rehydrate" (Canadian Prepper is where I learned of these. He uses them alot for outdoor camping). Also, women will need something for their monthly cycles. Heidi at Rain Country Kitchen has patterns and instructions for reusable menstrual pads. But there is something called "period underwear" that is also available. One of my daughters started using them about a year ago and finds them reliable. They can be washed just like regular underwear. For heavy days or at night, for extra security, you can still use a sanitary pad along with the underwear for peace of mind. For upset stomachs, Altoids peppermints work well and the tin can be reused for other items. For instance, Sugar in the Raw sells little packets of sugar, in a large box. I really don't like to use white sugar, so I keep some raw sugar packets in an old Altoids tin in my purse. So when we go out to eat, I can use my own sugar in my coffee. You can also keep a small sewing kit in those tins or any number of things. I find them extremely handy, much to my family's amusement! 😂

Love that you touched on the issue of pets as well! I'd for sure never leave without my cats and would add to get them chipped and registered in advance, bc just in case, and keep a copy of their vaccination certificate in the bag. Jackson Galaxy has a great video on emergency prep for cats/cat owners. Some words on the drugs front (my mom is a pharmacist): There are eye drops in single use containers which I can highly recommend for such use or to keep in your purse to have on hand in case of need. Also, please do a test run with those cooling devices that use cool packs etc., bc very small veils may freeze and burst if they come in too close contact with the cooling device. The ones with possibility of being charged by USB usually can be operated with a (solar charged) power bank, but try in advance if your combination does work and for how long. Please also pack a small amount of disinfectant wipes (alcopads should be fine) or spray, iodine ointment, band-aids, a bandage and one to two sterile, individually packed compresses, pain killers, anti vomiting medication and some active charcoal tablets. Fingers crossed you'll never need that bag :)

Great list Mary. Thank you. I find from Trader Joe’s ginger chews which helps with nausea, motion sickness and just plain good tasting chews. Comes in small green packages and usually be found around the checkout stands. Also at Trader Joe’s are small containers of milk that are shelf stable. In my purse there are always a couple Extend Nutrition bars. Used to find them in my grocery store but has been discontinued. Now I buy them by the box from Amazon in a variety of flavors. They are high in protein, 130 calories, low glycemic, 1 g of sugar. A friend who is diabetic uses these which gives her about 6 hours of maintenance on days she cannot eat lunch at work. Over the years have often given them out to someone in a class or friend out shopping who felt they were fading and who could not get to food for another hour or two. It brought them back up to function. Peanut butter jar while not light weight I would never be without. I use luggage tags on suitcases, backpack, sewing machine cases etc. The ones I have have a cover that snaps closed so the information is not publicly seen. I also put the card in backwards which has my last name and address. Before I retired I always used my work address and phone number.

Very good information. Might I add, a small wood stove with small cooking pots and some flint/matches. Quick cooking rice like Uncle Bens. A bag of toasted oats is a good filler. First Aid for oneself and your pet are important too. Keep sleeping bags ready. Extra gasoline filled containers for the car. Portable solar charger for your phone. Locate the closest body of drinkable water ahead of time and stay there if needed.

Very informative video. Thank you! I have always had an emergency to go bag for myself, and for my cat. I have had to evacuate twice due to wildfires. I keep our bags by the front door ready to grab and go at a moments notice. My cat’s bag also includes a small pet appropriate first aid kit as well as a copy of his rabies certificate and current medical information. I also keep a photo of him should we accidentally be separated. He also has a leash, harness and collar with a name tag with my phone # on it. Some years ago I purchased a pet tent by Sturdi Products that folds down small enough to fit inside of his carrier. When opened I can put his carrier and foldable reusable litter box inside of the tent. He is very comfortable going into both his carrier and tent so it has greatly reduced the amount of stress that an evacuation can cause. I also have a battery operated crate fan that hooks to the crate door of his carrier. This was very helpful once when we were caught in traffic in the summer heat while evacuating from a fire. I could not leave the car running the entire time and the crate fan kept my boy cool. It was literally a life saver! I now have a small Jackery solar power unit and a fan that can be plugged into it that has been added to my evacuation gear.

Also have several First Aide kits with you too, various sizes and types of bandaids and gauze bandages as well, children especially can get booboos and need to keep the sore clean the first day or two. The cling type bandages are good to have on hand especially if your going to be walking a lot. I recently turned my ankle while stepping onto a low curb. I wrapped it up for the first day to stabilize it and keep the swelling down too. You can make your own hot or cold pack easily with a bag of rice.

Maybe I missed it, but the most important factor to me in packing a 3 day get home bag is calories. An adult backpacking 10 miles per day (with a 25# pack) could burn 2500-3500 cal/day plus basal metabolic rate. It would be hard to carry that much heavy tinned food and juice boxes. Frankly for this I somewhat abandoned the idea of carrying all real food. For my get home bag I carry a block of coast guard emergency rations (3600 cal per 9 bar pack) plus 3 high calorie freeze dried meals, 3 larabars, 3 epic jerkys. Instant coffee. If I have time to plan I would add 3 small apples or oranges. 2 x 1L Smart water bottles plus an empty 2L Platypus for backup with a Sawyer mini for filtration (plus Aqua Mira for backup). For kids you could do 2 1/2 L water bottles plus an empty 1 L platy. I know everyone wants to be healthy and organic, but in a short term emergency where you might be walking, I think it’s ok to be temporarily pragmatic!

I agree. I think its important to think about your personal circumstances. While we can't know the future we can make our best guess. Both my children started new colleges last fall. My daughter commuted up the mountain and my son went hours away in the opposite direction. I made them each a get home bag, but they were both different. My daughter could walk home in a day. Her biggest threat was sliding off the side of the mountain due to slippery roads or a storm. She needed to be able to stay warm and it didn't matter if her food was heavy. If she had to walk, ditch the heavy stuff or eat it first, as it is only a 1 day event or if she's in the car in the ditch she won't be going anywhere. My son on the other hand (hurricane or civil unrest would be his most likely threat) would have multiple days if he was traveling on foot. He needed light weight food, water purification, a map, an emergency sleeping bag, etc. Calories ARE important when you are in freezing temps or hiking for days! It took months of planning, researching and purchasing to complete them, but it does a momma's heart good to know her children are prepared. There are still things I would like to improve when I can afford to!!
@traveler7929
@traveler7929 Год назад
@@kam2162 Nice job and good points. I work about 30 miles from home so that’s why I think of the get home bag in terms of 10 mile days, but not everyone would have the same situation. I would still want more calories and water capacity on board in case I got stuck somewhere though. If not exerting, the food can last quite a bit longer than 3 days.

Really enjoying this! Thanks for putting this together and for how wel thought out this is. One thing I’d like to add if I may, if you end up in a shelter be sure not to use any of the nut products as there’s a high likelihood you may be staying with someone with a severe not allergy ( who may or may not have their own epi pen with them). I hope that’s helpful!

I have planted bug out bags in several locations on the property. They've come in handy with fires and floods we've had in the last 5 years. They're also easy to drop off to those affected when we are not.

My neighborhood provides empty joint containers (plastic) from time to time. I sanitize and dry them, and they are ready for filling with instant tea powder. I found a small funnel at the specialty cooking store. I keep a teaspoon with a round handle in the tea jar and put the funnel on top. (Makes things quick and easy to refill). I write the quantity of tea on the outside of the plastic container since the sizes vary a bit. Sometimes I also carry a prepackaged lemonade or citrus drink to add to the tea for variety or a little extra caffeine.

the first time we took our children to an amusement park we all wore the same color- florescent orange! The t-shirts and shorts were all the same color. So easy to spot my kids and for them to spot their Dad and Mom! We used a permanent marker to write our phone number on the back of their hand. Large groups of people and having children ages 5, 5 and 7 is rather nerve wracking, children can disappear so quickly! Stay Safe!

I have an organic green powdered drink from a company called Purium. It is already packed in freeze dried packs. My grandkids actually love to just eat it. But it is meant to be mixed in water. I mix mine with collagen powder. None of this needs to be refrigerated . I keep lots of water in my car and in my home. I live in an apt. with my sister and the water is on metal shelve units. We live in earthquake country and when the big one hits they have told us to be prepared for at least 3 weeks. That means no electricity. My daughter bought a freeze drying machine. It is pretty awesome. You can scramble eggs, freeze dry them, and when needed just open them up, and warm them on a outside grill if you can.
