I have a prepacked toiletry bag with most stuff, my suitcase has a few stuff in it as well. Then I just have clothes, undies and few other things to pack. As well as a prepacked makeup bag.

I keep a travel set of toiletries, makeup & chargers/cables that are always packed. They are not the things I use daily at home. I check the toiletries & makeup after every trip & replenish as needed. This way, all I have to think about are clothes.

I have been doing this for many years. I replenish everything after returning from a trip and when not in a hurry. I then put my cosmetics bag and cables bag in my suitcase. They stay there until I’m ready to travel again! I even have a curling iron I just leave in there for travel, and an electric toothbrush as well. I charge it after returning from a trip.

I always keep my "master list" right by my suitcases. I check everything off as it goes into my bag. That way I know what I have and if it's in my bag I never unpack my TSA bag or my toiletry bag. I can be packed in no time. The last trip I went on, my husband literally said "It's frightening how fast you can get ready for a trip....."That was two weeks ago.
@Rosebud9040

I also keep a master list that I check off as I pack. Otherwise when I'm in a hurry and can't remember if I packed something like my hairbrush I throw one in and end up with two.

One thing I do especially since we visit family often. I keep a drawer/box at my sons/daughters house that has toiletries and some clothes. Keeping a bathrobe at their house is great because they take up a lot of room. Winter clothes are bulky so I leave some there too. I will shop for things that I will keep there, socks, underwear etc. we have lots of kids but they don’t live too far from each other but they live on the east coast and we are on the west coast. We visit at least once a year.

I do that, too! Full size of all my toiletries, bathrobe, bug spray, slippers, and a few other things - saves me so much room in my liquids bag that I can pack applesauce and hummus and still have extra room! This last trip, even though it was all driving, I didn't bother to bring my own raincoat because I knew we had enough at my parents' house between the ones I gave my parents 4 years ago and a couple others we had. It just ended up working out that I spent most of my time inside on the rainy or snowy days, and when I did have to go outside on those days, it was usually only to and from the car.

I have my toiletry bag already packed and ready to go. I just have a few items to toss in. I use old contact cases labeled and filled with moisturizers, foundation, vasaline, acne cream, etc.....(i top those off typically after I return from a trip). As for comfy shoes, I use custom orthotics, and those make any shoe comfy! You can also use generic ones from Amazon. I have all my cords in a see thru pouch all ready to go as I don't take any from home, I have specific ones for travel.I like your color scheme idea - and denim. Great choices!

After travelling a lot for decades I have realized all I need is my passport my ticket cash credit card and essential medicine. all the rest is fundamentally optional. Having this realization totally helps take the worry out of it! But I have duplicates for most item I keep prepacked now. I have a 2-3 day minimal kit that could go in a personal item. Thank Laurie for your great tips.

My suitcase holds all my "travel only" stuff like my tiny umbrella, travel pillow/ blanket set, and packing cubes. One drawer in my bathroom is dedicated to travel pouches, travel bottles, with a gallon sized Ziploc of samples & toiletries. I always have a tech pouch in my purse. I also always carry a water bottle or mug, and a small pouch in my bag with hot sauce, tea bags, drink mixes, a spork, and my travel straw. I can be packed for a weekend in a half hour, if I needed to.

I am an empty nester with many empty closet that I can now use. I have dedicated one closet to travel. Being from Canada our travels consists mostly to travelling to warmer destinations during our winter. My day clothes on a trip is always the same for any destination, I wear skorts with a blouse or a t-shirt. For night time it depends on where we are….. For instance if we are on a cruise ship it’s a little dressier, if it’s a resort it’s casual chic, if it’s on an excursion with a group of people I might keep my day skort and change the top. I pick and choose what I will wear from this closet depending on the destination. Having a travel capsule wardrobe in a dedicated closet with items matched together has been a great help to me. Skorts and arching top are paired together on the same hangers, Black dress is paired with a bolero/cardigan/jacket (I wear this dress with different tops and nobody notices that I am wearing the same dress) My pjs are actually nice loungewear type pants paired with t-shirts or a nice long blouses that I can wear as an extra outfit on cooler nights. I have a packable rain jacket and umbrella Packing cubes and suitcase are also in that closet. Hubby also created a capsule travel closet in a different room. We don’t travel last minute anymore but we don’t also don’t worry about what we are going to wear or spend hundreds of dollars buying new clothes before the trip. We pack the night before or early morning. It takes us about 20 minutes to pack. I’ve kept the closet’s doors open during COVID to air out the clothes but everything will still need to be refreshed before our next trip…and I can’t wait!!

Rather than black jeans, which can add to the weight of your suitcase, I pack a pair of black knit or jersey pants, which are lightweight, roll up easily and don’t wrinkle. They are also dressier looking than the jeans but can also be worn during the daytime or for leisure hours because of the comfort factor. I like to wear mine on the plane because they are so comfortable. Elastic waist optional! Thanks for all your great videos, Laurie.

@jenharvey3397 2 года назад
I find it so easy to forget meds, especially with last-minute packing. I now keep a pocket pharmacy in my purse - 10 days' worth of prescription meds, plus my most commonly used OTC remedies. I used to keep in in my just-in-case motel bag in my car, until I learned that the heat will damage the medicines and perhaps make them non-viable.

I have a packing checklist template with my different bags and keep certain travel items in ready status, particularly my ditty / dopp kit - which I restock after I return home from every trip. The different bags are for different trips, e.g. the international carry on bag includes adaptors and does not look military, while my US carry-on is my military day pack.

The best thing I did when we traveled to Europe for 10 days in a carry on and personal item only was pack things that I liked but was willing to leave behind We left clothes behind which freed up space in our suitcase for purchases without adding weight. We bought travel bottles from dollar store and left all our toiletries that were unused behind. Even with everything we bought we were lighter on the trip home.

I keep a "plane comfort kit" always packed, and I pack it inside a pouch that is supposed to serve as an airplane pillow case. So, it is all flight comfort/health essentials, packed in a gallon ziploc, packed in a padded bag that serves as a small travel pillow when stuffed with something. Then I wrap a sweater or hoodie around my waist for the flight. Once I've boarded, I put my bag in the overhead bin, and take the ziploc with all my flight essentials in the seat back pocket, then fold up my sweater or hoodie into the case for my travel pillow. I also always wear a large scarf/shawl/towel (I use a Teema Labyrinth), which can be used as a blanket if I get cold on the flight.

I love being able to use just one charge cord for all my devices - phone (in fact, everyone in my family has a phone with the same type of charging port), mp3 player, kindle, power banks, audio recorder... The only thing I had to use a separate charger for on my last trip (got home just over a week ago) was my camera batteries, because that charger doesn't take a micro USB to USB cord. I keep a toiletry bag mostly packed, and while it's pretty complete, I really only keep in it for trips what I would actually need if I got stuck overnight in a layover city (hairbrush, toothbrush, travel tube of toothpaste, 2 flossers, chapstick, travel bottles of hand sanitizer, soap, and lotion; I don't wear makeup, so I don't have to pack that) - I try to always shower the night before I leave, so I don't have to worry about that. I keep a full size of all my toiletries at my parents' house, which is always my first, and almost always my last, main stop on any trip. I find that while a packing list/system is definitely helpful, making note of what I took and didn't end up needing, and/or didn't take and did end up needing, is just as important for honing it in for next time. I got back 8 days ago from my most recent trip (longest road trip I've ever been on in my life), but I still need to finish the list of everything I brought, and writing down what I didn't end up wearing, the latter of which isn't much, but it was a 3 1/2 week road trip that included some tent camping (I still have everything divided out, and it's starting to drive me crazy that I can't put them away yet because if I do, I won't remember what was in which pile).

Totally simplifies my trip and if u r on vacay, u will never see these people again, so who r u trying to impress w/multiple earrings that u have to worry about losing! Great travel tip...learned on my Africa trip in 2019..turn your underwear inside out and re-wear...requires 1/2 of what u wld normally pack (not into washing and waiting for things to dry when u r constantly on the move).

I do that as well, I always have a Lifestraw Go Bottle in my bag. That way I can fill my bottle at the fountain or sink without worrying about water quality, since it filters out anything dodgy. I also always carry a Stanley metal lidded cook mug, stuffed with tea bags, coffee sachets, hot chocolate, and bouillon cubes, along with an immersion coil heater for use indoors and a folding Esbit stove and fuel tabs for outdoor cooking. If I am on a road trip as opposed to flying, I always keep a Mountain House bucket in the trunk of my car, which gives me 12 freeze dried camping meals (4 of those are breakfast, the others are lunch/dinner options.) That way I am always able to make myself a hot drink or meal, whether I am staying at a hotel or at a roadside rest stop.

Wonderful tips, as always, Laurie. In the Before Times, I purchased a whole wardrobe of travel clothes from Travelsmith (the only online company I know of that offers plus size, travel specific clothing. ) Alas, they are now out of business. I had different pallettes in different cubes/folders (one might have a pair of kakhi trousers, 3 short sleeve T's and one long sleeve T that all match, another one would have a different pallette). All the clothing was lightweight, most was non-wrinkle, all were capable of being washed by hand in the sink and would be dry by morning. For a trip, I would just pick whichever clothing collection worked, Add a couple of items as the season dictated, grab my toiletries pouch (unlike you, I keep all my travel toiletries in a reasonably compact hanging bag from LL Bean, and I refill everything after each trip so it's ready for the next). Alas, after 2 years of lockdown, those clothes no longer fit, but I am determined that they will fit again by next year.

You can build a capsule wardrobe with 3 tops/2 bottoms/1 jacket-cardigan that will take you far...and remember that you wear one of those outfits. You can get-by on much less than you think, just look and feel good with what you select. Use a spray hand sanitizer to spritz the underarms or use underarm shields to keeps clothes fresh. Remember, it's just a few days.

I keep pouches with essentials packed that stay in my suitcase all the time just incase. I have had several unexpected funerals over the years. Keep deodrant, small or travel size shampoo/conditioner, facial soap/moisturizer, lip balm, ear plugs, etc. You can also keep a paper copy of packing list inside your suitcase so if you are upset when packing you won't leave behind something you really need (meds, eyemask, gum for plane, eye drops, chargers, etc.) You can even keep an extra charge cord & portable power bank that "lives" in your suitcase. 🛅 ♥️

But, I did receive the weekender bag & compression bags you had recommended and omg I love them!!!! I also received the travel pro carry on and I just want to be sure before I throw away the box that the size will be acceptable on the airplane in the overhead. The one I bought was travel pro carryon walkabout made for Macy's it was on sale for a really good price $104. the overall exterior dimension is 23" x 14.5 x 9.5" (with a 2" expandable) will this be allowable? The tag says sizer bin tested. So I guess it's ok?????

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie you provide great tips in your videos and I have subscribed to your channel. Very practical stuff. I do some preplanned stuff like keeping safety pins, hair pins, cotton balls in a ziplock bag but other stuff I usually do about 4 days. One travel pouch I love are the ones that have 4 compartments and roll into one box. They keep my stuff intact. Usually carry as little liquids even in my check in bag. My foundation is also the roll on tube 😀

I think you should pack your prescription medication, medical information & prescription glasses first, and then your electronics. Those are things you HAVE to bring with you & may be impossible or really expensive to replace when to get where you’re going. Basic stuff like underwear, socks, a couple of t-shirts, and wear your sweater & coat on the plane. As long as you’re wearing them, they’re not carry on items. Then pack the bare minimum of toiletries & makeup that’s too expensive or not easily found later. Most hotels will give you basic toiletries at the front desk, like a tooth brush & paste, deodorant. Then look for a local Target, or drug store. This is for extreme situations, like when I had to fly cross country when my mom was admitted to a hospital. But it’s enough to get by in an emergency.

What's wrong with a list? As someone has already said, I have one on my phone. I don't like keeping small packs of toiletries in a pouch permanently in my case, as these could go rancid if not used for a while. Many of your tips can also be transferred to packing quickly for a hospital stay.

Hi Stephanie. It's Travelpro and with the handle people say it is 23". But it has never been turned away as a carryon in 20 years. In the 70 seater planes it fits, but in the under 50 seats it gets gate checked for free: bit.ly/36UzwbY

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie My 19" carryon always gets gate checked on regional jets, too, so I'm not surprised - a lot of regional jets only have one side of overhead bins, and the ones that do have 2, the bins are generally really small (I think when I fly on them, they say all rolling bags have to be gate checked, but I can't remember whether that applies to ones that are, say, 15", and it, of course, would vary from one airline to the next).
