You forgot to sand down the controller. See after the manufacture paints the controller the spray an sort of paint protector on it to keep the paint from rubbing off or scratching off. Then you must wash it with regular dish soap to take off left over dust then let dry then spray what is called Adhesive Promotor on it really lightly. What this does is helps the paint stick to the plastic with 💯% no drips or run offs. Once done spraying wait 7 days before wiping with a micro fiber cloth before spraying the clear gloss enamel on so the paint doesn’t fade when holding for long times
Do you have any tips for trying to avoid getting a lot of spray in between the button holes? I used to paint 360 controllers as a side hustle when I was in 7th grade like 9 years ago hahah. Now that I’m in college I feel like I could start up this side hustle again but around campus with fliers
vey nice, thank you .. have been dying to custom paint my controllers for a long time & put my brand on it & also do it as gifts for fam/friends kids. i paint, draw & tattoo so always looking for something fun and challenging to paint on. also having a house of gamers, and a LOT of controllers lol its nice to make sure whos is whos. the fact your controller lasted 5 years i give you props and how!? with 2 kids i think we have gone thru maybe 10+ controllers haha, including me! ive been through 4 alone in the last few years. im an aggressive gamer XD where could someone obtain these needed items (paints)? home depot? special order or locations etc? and about how long of a process start to finish including prep time (so not to get something painted other than the controller) WITH patience and no hurry? either way, great video!
I painted one and I'm guessing I didn't let it cure long enough because the clear coat started rippling up where I held it and the paint under started wearing off. How long would you expect it to cure before handling?
Hey there. Was wondering if maybe you could provide some insight for me? I’ve had this problem twice now, but I’ve done some DIY Paint projects on two of my controller, and I have this problem where, after everything’s put back together, properly, for some reason, the controller registers that one or both of the triggers is being activated, despite the fact that it isn’t. I really can’t tell what exactly the problem is, but it seems as if the trigger isn’t coming back up 100% of the way, or for some reason the trigger naturally sits at a position where it’s activated. If I manually pull up on the trigger, it does deactivate. But as soon as I let go of it, it reactivates. I was wondering if maybe you had any knowledge on this type of situation, and / or if you know what a fix was. Thanks in advance!
Do you have any problems with the paint on the thumbstick rim chipping off? (Specifically the upward edge due to heavy use) How do I solve this problem? TIA.
Is there a way to protect the paint without clear coat? Or remove the gloss effect from the clear coat? I like the matte finish of the oem controller, I just don't know how to replicate or get close to that?
Your kid is cute as hell lol. Anyway thanks for the video I'm actually doing this exact thing right now, and searched "painting an xbox controller" and yours was the first hit, and exactly what I needed. Thanks for taking the time to make this for those of us that are clueless about this shit.
Amazon only shows the full sized cans, none of them look like the one you were using. Could you maybe send me the exact name of it or the product number? Maybe i can look it up that way
You would need to be careful using sandpaper on raw plastic, the scratches can swell when primer is applied and become visible. It would need to be a fine paper, the scotchbrite pads will abrade the surface similarly to sandpaper.
If you threw the controller hard enough it would, plastic might break before the paint. The 360 controller I did years prior the same way still looks awesome!
Trippy Silver it's a lot more convenient to take everything off and then painting them. it gives a cleaner finish and you dont have to worry about the internals. tape on the buttons would be a nightmare to take off and it would chip the paint.
That's aggressive on these but yeah, could sand and reclear too. The rapid clear doesn't flow out nearly as nice as the glamour, it did pinch up a bit after drying. Was trying to use some replicable products for people without compressor setups.
