This is the easiest and cheapest method to paint concrete that you are probably ever going to find. Using watered down latex or acrylic paints is a great way to add color to concrete especially because these paints are available in every color under the sun. Normally concrete colors are limited but not using this process. The final results are indefinitely color fast if you reapply an acrylic (Water based) concrete sealer every year. You should keep your air flow going and pull the trigger when you want the paint to come out. That way you can get a more uniform look with out a stripped look or real heavy paint in one place that could make a dark spot or make the paint run. I would suggest watching a couple of RU-vid programs on how to use an air brush. 🙂 Just a suggestion from someone who has painted a lot of cars and other things.

Thanks for the info. Twenty years ago I bought 4 large concrete planters at a thrift store. This fall I’m going to empty the dirt and try changing their color to a mottled medium brown using different shades of brown acrylic thinned with water (1/5 ratio), some sponges, brushes and sealer. Hope it works. 🌺

It will almost certainly work. If the concrete you have is dirty and stained perhaps start with an acid wash followed by a TSP scrub rinse. Then you should have a good base to start painting.

I enjoy your videos - can you go over making latex molds / using metal in concrete for strength (actually show us putting it in molds etc ) I can send you a honey to do list if needed lol learning a lot about concrete thank you
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
I spent a long time with mold making, experimenting with different rubbers. Latex was the first that I tried and the first that I abandoned. The smaller the pieces you are making the more latex is suitable. It is so thin like a skin. This is both the advantage and disadvantage at the same time. I like urethane rubber where you can pour any thickness and it cures readily. No more 100 layer applications of latex lol! But I do like the affordability of latex. I will definitely be having many videos about mold making on this channel, latex included. It is one of the most technically challenging aspects of working with concrete as a hobby. Also critical for taking it to the next level and working with concrete as a business.

First imagine what you could do with white Portland cement based concrete using this technique. Second, you could reduce your integral pigment into your concrete mix and use this technique to take it to the next level. For example, use iron oxide and titanium white to make a pale pink concrete then build up layers of fire engine red on the surface.

Great video, I’d really like to give this a go. Can I ask what airbrush and compressor you used? Thanks
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
The compressor was a large shop compressor. For this little airbrush you only need a tiny compressor. Basically any size will do. >The smallest one available at the local hardware store would do it. The airbrush was from Amazon. I have tried a few over the years and they are all about the same. Gravity feed is what I am using in this video. The brand name to search for the airbrush is Hotorda 0.3mm Dual Action Airbrush

On the paint sprayer, what type of compressor do you use, I didn’t hear it running and it seems light in power compared to normal compressors. Would be interested to know?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete Год назад
The compressor was a giant shop compressor with a tank large enough that it does not need to run while I am painting, for the most part. I think I still had 30 psi and I use slightly more sometimes.

You said it can be done to driveways (and probably sidewalks) but will the sealant last or do you have to seal it every year?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
You definitely would want to seal it every year for anything whether a patio, driveway or ornamental concrete. And if you did paint a driveway you would want to use blacks and gray colors mostly as chipping of the surface would show gray through. This is why for something like a decorative concrete driveway where gray is not the desired base color, I recommend to acid wash with brown, red or charcoal colors first. This acid stain burns color into the top 1/4" layer of the concrete. You can then paint and seal as in this video for interesting colors but also a more stable base layer which will not show gray through in areas that have become scratched or damaged.

I love those face planters. I'm sure you've been asked this 100 times. Do you sell the molds?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
I do not sell the molds. Which is too bad because I have about a million of them! I made them for myself and the process was not economical. I used urethane rubber, and thick. So they will last forever but if I sold them they would be too expensive. I probably will have a video soon showing how to make them for yourself. That is the best for everyone. Thanks for commenting.

If I want a more opac color, would can spray paint be an option? Would there be any negative reactions?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete Год назад
I would think that a water based paint would yield better results than spray paint. Is spray paint oil based or water based?

What is the issue with solvent based sealers. And what is the best way to apply them?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
Solvent based sealers are actually great in that they will darken the concrete more so than silane based penetrating sealers, or even acrylic based "wet look" sealers. If there is a problem it is that with this concrete painting method we are using acrylic based paints, and so an acrylic sealer works well. Solvent may work as well or better, but I can not speak to that. I have however used acrylic/latex paints with acrylic sealer as shown in this video, and then gone on to experience color fast results through a literal dozen frozen northern winters without applying more sealer. The color holds fast even still.
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
To seal with solvent usually involves mechanical pump sprayers, or nap rollers but always just follow the instructions as provided by the manufacturer of the sealer you are using for best results. Cheers.

Does the concrete still breath after painting or is it sealed by the paint?
@creatingconcrete

it still breathes. I think even after the sealer it breathes, if I remember correctly. Check with the label on the sealer for confirmation on this

Can you also use a paintbrush?
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete 2 года назад
You could, sure. There is no wrong way, though your finished look would be different. But that might work for you depending on what you are working on. Try to have the pain thin enough to avoid leaving lines from the brush.

You shouldn’t water down acrylic paint by that ratio. That’s why you are having to use MULTIPLE layers to get the colour anything like. Just water down acrylic at 1 part water to two parts acrylic and you’ll get a much better result.
@creatingconcrete
@creatingconcrete Год назад
I have been using this technique for 20+ years now. When you water it down less the sprayers will not spray it. I mean, I could just use a paint brush and paint acrylic paint right onto the concrete, but the look would not be similar to what you see here. It really all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I like the look of many light layers of paint.

@@creatingconcrete Hi CC that’s fine as it’s horses for courses etc. I was just pointing out one of the things that you should not really do with acrylic. Too much water breaks down the acrylic (plastic) bonds that are inherent in the paint. I have made and painted concrete items, pot’s etc in the past. I got the same effect by brush blending the colours together (ie no definitive lines between the colours, much like an acrylic artist would do). The effect being like you’d see on a watercolour ‘wash. The only reason I painted with a brush and did not dilute the acrylic paint beyond that which is good for it. Was simply because I wanted my pieces to be fully waterproofed/sealed. I am just putting it out there for those folk who do not have a spray gun and compressor etc. You can achieve the same effect (without too much hassle) a brush and a little practice. The look would be the same and the piece would be fully sealed/waterproofed. At the end of the day acrylic paint is just pigment, binders and acrylic (which is basically microscopic plastic). If anyone who wishes to try this technique. Just search RU-vid for ‘blending acrylic paint’.
