As painters we are often faced with subject matter that needs to be edited and simplified in order to make a good painting.
This is a real skill in its own right. One of the biggest questions we can ask is what attracted us to this particular subject? Or what is it that we want to say?
From this point we can begin to think about editing out or simplifying anything that is not alignment with our artistic goal or vision.
In this video I take you through my thought process when analysing this particular reference photo, and then how I go about interpreting this into a working painting.
