How To Paint Rims FAST and CHEAP! (Best Method)

This video is a full tutorial on how to paint rims. Whether you want to change the look of your car or repair damaged rims like the ones in this video, painting your rims can solve the problem. Today we look into how its done.
Materials Needed:
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Soap and water
- 220 and 400 grit sandpaper
- Hair dryer or leaf blower
- Microfiber cloth and rubbing alcohol
- 2" painters tape
- Deck of cards you do not need
-Trash bags or plywood
- DupliColor filler primer
- Automotive primer
- Automotive rim paint (from paint shop)
- Automotive clear coat
Steps:
- Remove wheels from car with jack, stands, and lug wrench
- Wash each rim thoroughly with soap and water and let dry
- Sand each rim with 220 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit
- Blow away debris with leaf blower or hair dryer
- Wipe down with microfiber and rubbing alcohol
- Place rims on top of trash bags or plywood in painting location
- Place cards around edges to protect tire from paint
- Place painters tape over valve stems to protect from paint
- Apply one coat of filler primer to face of rims, 1 hr dry
- Apply two coats of automotive primer to face and barrel, 1 hr dry
- Apply two coats of automotive paint to face and barrel, `1-2 hr dry
- Apply two to three thick coats of clear coat, 5 hour dry between, 1 day dry after final coat

From someone that does this for a living. A few mistakes you made. Use a cleaner with your scuff pad. And sand paper. I’ll wet sand with a degreaser or spray away glass. Cleaner. When cleaning the rim never touch the rubber with the towel. Do a final wipe with the cards in. Primer is unnecessary on rims a very very coat might be fine but it tends to cause issues on the rims. You don’t want the thickest layer possible as thick clear coat will will be more brittle. Typically two coats. All of that is just minor professional differences.

For someone that does this for a living I’m surprised you didn’t notice the balancing weights that should have come off prior to painting and then rebalanced when paint cured.

Looks good. Just got a smoking deal on a Car for my sons "First Car". Only thing is it was old lady driven (Barely Driven At All) and she has Bland Alloy Rims, No Window Tint. Just kind of a boring looking Honda Accord. Paint looks good everything about this car is mint, so I'm going to put a little "Pizzazz" on it before I give it to him. Get it tinted, paint the rims up and and a complete stereo overhaul, sub setup. These are some great tips, reasonable price with a little work. Appreciate the video, I'm going to try it out. Suggestion……save your back dude!!!! Have an elevated surface to work on & maybe build a “Lazy Susan” type rotating round surface so you can stand in one spot and gently rotate the wheel. Your spray can will stay more even & you’re less likely to miss areas while walking (bent over) around the tires.

I have a 21’ Limited in black and just curious how did you blackout the grille just plastidip? I want to get a replacement but hard to find one that works with the front camera. Looks good btw!

It is actually black from factory on the C6. Taking the grille out sanding it down and airbrushing it would likely work though. Thanks for watching!

After you cleaned with rubbing alcohol and then were putting the cards around, the rims look darker had you applied something in between?

That was the first coat of primer, I had forgotten to film the first coat. The cards would indeed go in right after rubbing alcohol before the first coat of primer though.

It isn’t absolutely critical, but I would personally recommend it still as it gives the paint a better bond and finish. Should be fine either way though

Question, when mounting a new tire, does the paint on edge of wheel get scrapped off by tire mounting machine???

Unfortunately yes, but for whatever reason not around the whole edge but rather parts. I usually touch up by spray painting onto a paper plate and using a Q tip as a brush. Has worked well for me so far but that’s definitely a downside to this method

Thinking about doing this to my rims but how long will the paint last on the rims if you drive everyday?

I’ve had it last a few years doing this, but you’ll occasionally need to touch up a spot or two usually on the edge of the rim. When you get tires changed some of the edge can scrape. I just fix this by spraying paint onto a plate and using a cotton swap as a brush to fill in the paint.

I think I bought 3 cans of primer, 4 of lacquer (main paint), and 2 of clear coat. Probably a little much but wanted to play it safe.

How do I take off all 4 tires at the same time? I live in the city with no garage :(

You’ll need a jack with four jackstands to take all four off at once, however I’d recommend two jackstands and doing the front two, followed by the rear two. A jack and two stands should run around $60 from Walmart or autozone. As far as where to do it, when I lived in a city I usually would do this in the most empty parking garage I could find, but I don’t think painting in a public garage would work. Any concrete surface will work, definitely do not jack up the car in grass. So I would say find a concrete surface in the quietest area possible with the fewest people around, as if someone asks you to leave it will be hard on 2 wheels :). Also be sure to break the lugs loose before lifting the wheel off the ground and use the jack at the specific jack points of your vehicle. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Rim is 19 inch diameter and the tire was a 325/25 ZR19 I believe for the rear and a 305 in the front

I think you could go either way, if you do sand between filler and paint I would personally suggest a high grit of sandpaper to keep the finish smooth.

I put them all on a piece of wood with the threaded size down to avoid getting paint there. Wiped them all down with alcohol, 2 coats black paint, 1 coat of clear

I believe chrome but the corrosion honestly made it hard to tell. They looked so dull and faded I had no choice but to paint them. Thanks for watching!

It took me 3 hours to paint 4 wheels which felt quick to me at least. However I’d say the main benefit was the financial savings opposed to time, it costed me $30 instead of a $900 powder coating job, given a lower quality outcome. There might be easier ways out there but this was the best thing I’ve tried, hope it was helpful somehow. Thanks for watching!

Nice video. Thanks. I might do this. Just wanted to point out that they are called wheels not rims. The rim is the outer part of the wheel that gets scratched easily. Sounds a bit novice calling an entire wheel a rim. Kinda like calling a magazine a clip in the gun world. Otherwise great video thanks.

My reasoning was as follows: 1. My rims had bad corrosion on them with the outer surface peeling. This looked terrible and I did not want it to continue further. 2. My car has a wrapped black roof with black aftermarket headlights, the chrome wheels were entirely out of place visually. 3. I spent the money to buy the car, I can do as I please with it. Btw, those are called WHEELS. Not rims. Rim of a glass. The rim of a jar. A rim is the outer edge. The wheel is the entire wheel. Rim just sounds so hood n lazy.

The rims were corroding, so I had no choice but to paint them. This car also has a black roof with black front headlights so it matched those.
