How To Spray Paint Your Wheels the Right Way (ONLY $25!)

3 Month Update! • How To Spray Paint You...
IMPORTANT:
Materials used:
3M Final Stripping pad - amzn.to/2N2CilT
Rustoluem Black Spray Paint - amzn.to/2UAaoSe
Rustoleum Clearcoat - amzn.to/3hmvbSS
Steps:
1) Degrease/ wash entire wheel. Dry
2) Use scuffing pad on wheel surface to prepare for paint
3) Use damp towel to get rid of dust created by step 2 and dry again after
4) Mask off tire and valve stem
5) Shake paint for 1 minute
6) One light layer of your paint. Wait 15 minutes between layers
7) 2 more layers of your paint, getting heavier for each
8) 3 Layers of clear coat
9) Let dry for one hour
To be safe, I wouldn't use the wheel on the car for 48 hours.
Overall, I thought this was a great use of time and money, and I'd recommend anyone to follow the instructions in the video and give it a shot! I also think this is better than plastidip.

For those that can’t take off the wheel. DO NOT GET PAINT ON YOUR BRAKE DISC OR BRAKE BLOCK. what I’ve done, grab a bunch of trash bags, scrunch them up and place them between the wheel and brake disc. And instead of using the color cards he uses to separate the rim from tire, I use scotch tape, can even use an ID card to wedge the scotch tape in.

I'd argue if they can't take off a wheel they shouldn't paint. It's very dangerous to get paint on rotors, calipers, slide pins, wheel hub bearings ect... Just jacking up the car from Δ points which is on frame after lower control arms and wheel wheels near center of vehicle. Put jack stands under axles taking care not to hit brake lines with jacks. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench to remove lug nuts and then wheel, put wheel under vehicle frame near Axle where skid plate is. When you put wheels back on only snug the lug nuts while it's lifted off ground, drop vehicle weight on tire then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern to torque spec with torque wrench! Usually between 80-100 Ft-Lbs

Whoops, I wish I had read this before I finished painting my rims today. My old cop car has mostly solid steel wheels with the little holes around the center so I am pretty sure no paint touched the brakes. I'll take a good look tomorrow. @@samdavis-zh3cv It's the part made to stop your vehicle when you press your brake, it doesn't have the same friction like it used too, you'll have to press harder to brake because it'll slide like if you put wax on it, on small road you'll "probably" be fine but when you get to an highway you might get surprise and potentially crash your car.

Idk if anyone else noticed, but the final product had a little bit of a gritty finish. There are a couple ways to minimize that. Don't do one light coat then two heavy coats. Maybe try more for like five light coats. Also, once your last coat of paint dries, you can lightly sand with high grit sandpaper (800 to 1000) then wipe down. Then do a few light coats of clear.

Thanks so much!!! I had a black Detective's Crown Vic that I've been doing a resto-mod on. I looked at a hundred rims online and nothing clicked with me. Today I painted the formerly black steel holed rims with Behr Soft Iron Satin Metallic. It came out GORGEOUS. Thank you so much!

Looks good and I like those wheels I had them on my old charger as well. Only things I would do different (and maybe overkill) would be after the scuff its best to use a wax/tar degreaser to make sure everything is off the wheels and then do a coat or 2 of primer before the paint.... Another good option to protect the tires is a deck of cards if you want want to rob the paint section at lowes lol. The 2 times I have painted wheels black I actually used high temp engine enamel paint, but I think any high quality enamel would be good.

Like I said two months ago they look a bit less glossy compared to when I first painted them because of that car being my daily driver, but other than that I am very pleased with how this turned out and I have no regrets with this whatsoever.

@@qtepiee88 probably best not to, paint tends to overspray. Especially when wind is involved and if your car is a vibrant colour and you use black paint. It’ll spray over your cars paint and unless you buy a cover for your car, it’s probably best not to try it. (even just old / unused rags/ towels) I highly suggest to take your wheels off and lay them flat so the paint also doesn’t drip. You should only have to take 4-5 bolts off. Most cars if not all should have a lug wrench in the boot for it

@@qtepiee88 just did mine yesterday get a bunch of bags and painters tape nd tape around the rim and bags on the tire and put the plastic bags around the break disc (make sure there cooled off) nd just go light around the rim nd wait about 3mins in between sprays to avoid crazy over spray

They came out very nice. I have to correct you on one thing when a paint says enamel it does not have anything to do with it being oil base or latex as both have enamel finish or hardness. Also you might give Dupli-color a try as it is an epoxy paint and has excellent bonding characteristics.

Just used the same Rust-Oleum professional enamel semi-gloss on my wheels and it turned out really amazing. The prep work making sure everything is nice and clean and smooth is the key and if you know how to use rattle can spray paint take your time keep your distance don't rush it and it will look great. I've used different spray paints on wheels and I think this one did the best by far smooth and clean finished product this is great paint for wheels I won't use anything else after this

It completely depends on what colour you're doing but i would highly recommend doing the inner wheel barrel. It adds alot to the final finish.

I would use the clear design for wheels ..rustoleum wheel clear ..home depot has it..reason for the wheel paint cause it has the properties for UV protection & temperature rating for wheels...normal paint will peel at higher temps..the inner wheel gets real hot around the wheel bearing & rotor disc(which get cherry red at rush hour) normal clear coat will crack or spider vain with expanding & contracting

I don't recommend painting over chrome. To do so properly, you'd really need to sand down the finish with multiple grits of sandpaper, and be aware that sanding chrome can be a bit dangerous, definitely need to wear a mask and long sleeves. If you just have a bit of rust coming through the chroming, try some phosphoric acid to clean them. It won't be perfect but will look a lot better....

You could save a step by using the scuff pad also known as scotch Brite pad while you're doing the washing. Also, if you're painting aluminum or alloys that don't have paint it's good to use an etching primer first to ensure paint sticks well or you could end up peeling or chipping in a short period of time.

Just wanted to comment and say that I did this about 7 months ago and it still looks new! Take your time on it, don’t be afraid to use the paint. The more black you put, the more shine that’ll come. Also, go ham with that crystal clear enamel - makes a world of difference when dirt and nasty things gets on it.

Excellent job, just got a question for you. Just before the 10 minute mark you gave a close up of the finished rim. Appears to be either air bubbles, dirt speckles or in perfections in the rim in the paint. Hoping it's the later, this can be removed with proper sanding, correct?

I recommend finding some other clear coat because upgrading the clear coat would really make the paint pop more. I believe some 2k clear would do way better but then again i know if it is heat resistant

Awesome video man. Had a few ??'s 1) Can this be done with a Chrome finish? I have Copper-looking alloys right now. Or would you alternatively recommend something like stainless steel finish for a steel, shiny look. 2) Can you leave the tires on the car while you're painting (physical limitations). I was thinking I could either mask off the inside of the tire - or if the inside gets painted, who cares, it's still shiny? :) As long as this doesn't damage anything in the inside of the wheels. Thanks again!

There is no real way to get a chrome finish except actual chroming. If you want to paint your rims and have a metal-looking finish, you could try Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish spray paint in Chrome. Prep well and apply light coats, but please don't use a clear coat or you may completely ruin the finish.

You can leave the tires on the car when painting, just mask off well so you don't get overspray on your car. Overspray goes farther than you think...

Using this method on my Tesla Model S P85D OEM rims this weekend, just sanded using an orbital sander, drill abrasive ball, and did first coat. So far so good. Wish me luck! Comment - For the paint samples idea, never understood why is everyone so worried about getting paint on their rubber tires? It will just wear off or give the tires a shiny "Just added tire shine look" which is OK with me! lol

How long did you wait before you sprayed the clear coat from the paint? I’ve had orangepeel issues before when spraying clear coat too soon

spray clear within an hour or after 24 hrs stops orange peel

I’d recommend doubling up on the clear coats with that product to put enough material in so that you can level and polish the finish after it’s cured to have an acceptable product. The orange peel in that finish screams rattle can

You'll still get that with a gun, but a little less so. Pros still cut and polish as clear never lays flat.

Awesome vid! Planning this soon. Gotta ask completely out of curiosity, what was the purpose of scuffing the inside if you didn't paint it? Is that necessary? Or did you mostly get it when going in from the top?

I see no one answered you… if you don’t scuff the inside that’s where your paint will start to peel.

@@fluentproductions1046 The stock paint will start to peel? Will it not rust easier that way? My question was being that he didn't paint the inside of the wheels, unless it was done off camera. We're only shown him painting the face of the wheel.

@@JLCra87 You should only scuff what you plan to paint. If you scuff and don't paint, then yes, it will rust.

I think the real answer is.. when you spray paint into the bottom of that tire… it paints everything down there. It’s like paint smoke and the inner tire got high. So even though he didn’t flip the tire over, everything got painted. Scuff it all.

looks helagood!...Gonna give it a shot. Had a question, did you paint the backside of the wheels so its all the same when looking at them and seeing the rim between the spokes? Would you suggest putting new tires on after or before I paint them, just worried tire shop might scratch them putting tires on. Thanks a bunch!

@@fish10381 I sanded and used black matte spray cans with primer in it 3 coats and 3 more of 2x clear and they came out better than what I anticipated I just saved myself a load of cash on black rims and I also blacked out the head lights,tail lights,side mirrors, gas cap, black wing and black grill now I am just waiting for my side skirts and now the fusion is looking dark blue and sexy sleek with black detail around the whole car.👍 thx for asking pal.

@@nikamira1 No I put cue cards standing upright close together around the whole edge of the rim. 3 coats of black with primer in 1 and 3 of clear coat of course after some light sanding and it came out professional thanks for asking and you can do it to.

Got a genesis coupe, gonna get coils bud can’t afford wheels atm too but I want to sand down the curb rash from the previous owner and paint my rims just for rnnn till I can get some wheels in a few months :) thank you !!
