In this short tutorial I'll be showing a simple yet effective method of painting rust onto your miniatures. I use a simplified version of this on the Death Guard miniatures, but for larger areas this will have your rust looking rough and horrible.

The way you break it down is so helpful. I often get lost watching others do weathering as they make every little thing take so many steps, I lose track of which bit is most important. Not so here!

I'm adding this to "times where you actually don't want to thin your paints." A lot of the rust texture comes from thicker base coat. I like this insight.
@BrushandBoltgun
@BrushandBoltgun 2 года назад
Hey Ivory, thanks for watching. I only ever thin my paints a little when freehanding so they flow a little better. The base coats on this were more 'thrown on' just for the video, they would usually be far smoother! haha :-)

@@BrushandBoltgun I use a wet palette made of some discount white dish sponge and paper towel. Although, granted just an extra drop just makes it feel like watercolor at times. My current theme is AdMech with a sea/costal theme. A lot of their mechanical stuff is going to look dredged from the sea. Do you have any tips for painting patina on minis? So far I have just been using a wash of a custom patina blue color against their more bronze/copper colored parts.
@BrushandBoltgun
@BrushandBoltgun 2 года назад
Yeah, I've been using a chippy tub with kitchen towel and greaseproof paper for the past decade or so, it's served me well so far. :) For the patina, I tend to use Citadel Nihilakh Oxide. It's thin enough that you can get it on really thin, or do a couple of layers if you want it a more solid colour. :) I always work it into/onto areas that aren't going to be scuffed or worn, so away from joints and areas that can be readily cleaned, etc. So building up around bolds or in/around the grooves, etc. :)

Really great looking effect. I painted up my Deathguard way back in the beginning of 8th edition, but I’m going to go back and add some rust. Do you have any tips for adding burn marks on say jet packs or melta guns? Could make for another helpful little video.

Cheers So Cal, very much appreciated! Hope all's well your way! :) I did a vid a while ago to do the tempering you can get on metal (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b0ukgZyVDII.html). Do you mean like that, or like scorch marks and the kind of carbon build up? :)
@socalastarte6727
@socalastarte6727 3 года назад
I do like that effect, but I’m looking for a way to make Vanguard vets jump pack vents looked burnt, and/or carbon build up. I imagine Vets would’ve had the same jump back for a bit and have gotten burned up over time. I’ve tried using focused washes and it doesn’t quite look right. Appreciate any ideas you might have.

I'm with you, I'll have a look and get back to you. I've played about with shades myself and it always looks a little streaky and not quite right (I think it's maybe because the shade mainly goes into the recesses rather than going on an even coat like soot build up). I've got some thoughts so will have a look :)

Im doing Rusted Necrons that you only see small parts of actual metal colour on would you do the entire in Typhus and then work upon it or is it better to paint it say Gun Metal first? I want them to look almost entirely rusted
@BrushandBoltgun
@BrushandBoltgun 3 года назад
Hi Jimmy, I’d have a good look at the minis and decide on which parts to rust. The joints would need to be mainly rust free so they could move, but you could use seraphim sepia, agrax earthshade and fuegan orange to make them look corroded but moveable? I think the majority of the mini could be rusted though. :)

Aren’t rhinos made from a material more advanced than Iron? Isn’t it like ceramics or titanium alloy...?

Hey Koraxis, thanks for watching! :) Yeah, they're definitely not iron. You don't have to use this rust on rhinos though, it's just showing how to paint rust*. :) * - I use it on my Death Guard vehicles because it looks ace and fits in with the rest of the army in terms of corrosion and rusting. :)
