Want to learn how to pass like an elite NHLer? In this intro video, we'll cover the most basic passing technique, a semi-advanced method, and a couple of unique and effective oddball passes.
Starting with the basics, the flat pass is the simplest way to distribute the puck. You just pass it directly to your teammate without much complexity. Since there are countless videos on this topic already, we won't dwell on it for long. Now, let's move on to the next technique.
The saucer pass comes in handy when there's an obstacle in your way, such as an opponent's stick. To execute this pass, you'll need to lift the puck from heel to toe, creating a ramp-like motion with your stick. The saucer pass has become quite common, so we won't delve too deep into it.
Next up, we have two oddball passes that may be considered more exotic but are still valuable if practiced well. The first one is the hook pass, which allows you to reach around obstacles instead of saucering over them. If you've seen floorball or similar sports, you'll know how useful this technique can be. To perform a hook pass, start at your heel and roll your toe, creating a hook-like motion with your stick. Then, utilize the momentum from heel to toe to make the pass around the obstacle. This is similar to the Crosby curl mechanic taught in our Precise Puck Control course but applied to passing instead.
The second oddball pass is a funny story that happened during the lockout when the Canucks practiced with us. One of the players unintentionally made a pass that was six feet in the air but landed perfectly on my stick, resulting in a goal. We named this pass the "Sedin purposeless pass." While it's not something you would intentionally do, it demonstrates that sometimes getting the puck to its destination, even in a rolling or bouncing manner, is more important than having a flat pass. It's akin to kicking a ball forward in soccer for someone to run onto. Sometimes you just need to get the puck there, regardless of how it arrives.
So, those are the four ways to pass in hockey. If you're eager to improve your passing skills, our Precise Puck Control program is the perfect resource. This comprehensive course covers techniques like the Crosby curl, vectoring (moving the puck with quick touches), and the intricate details of connecting your stick blade with the puck. We provide a systematic training approach and a language to dissect these skills. You can find this course in our Train 2.0 Plus Membership, where we break down the exact how-to of these skills.
We hope you found this tutorial helpful and learned something new today. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for our next video, which might cover more content from our Precise Puck Control course. See you soon!

I really like the hook pass. It's deceptive and great for passing through an opposing players legs or stick. The deceptive part is the change in angle of the pass which can throw a lot of people off.

I once saw Duncan Keith make a breakout pass that changed the entire way I thought of saucer passes. Instead of floating the puck 2'-3' in the air, he kept the blade of his stick closed and the puck only came maybe 4-6" off the ice, but travelled about 20' like that. I started noticing NHLers do this all the time. It almost looks like they're making a flat pass, but they are actually just making really low saucer passes (I think mainly because NHL defenders just have such good sticks, and they cover lanes so well). It allows you to pass it much harder, but still get the benefit of a saucer. This way, there's less time for the defender to react, and it's much much harder to knock down. Now, every time I see someone float a saucer pass, I think of it as a "junior" pass, because NHLers just knock those things out of the air like it's nothing.

@@Train2point0 Cool! I gotta say, I really enjoy the way you teach from a scientific perspective. I've never been satisfied with "that's the way it's been done" as an explanation, and understanding why certain motions/patterns are more efficient/powerful has really helped me internalize the new techniques. Thanks for all the work you're doing! I hope it catches on even further.

@@Train2point0 preseason highlights from Oilers-Canucks on Sept 27, 2023 has a great example of this type of pass. Bouchard to McDavid for the OT winner.

The fourth pass reminds me of a chip pass, which isn’t a sauce pass cuz it comes from a lil slap/chip. I do this all the time in beer league in tight space to pass to teammates. Sometimes soft sauce passes are tough to pull off in tight. So I use the chip pass! And thanks coach, your videos are some of the best on YT! You describe things very well, particularly mechanics. When I found a good mechanics focused golf instructor it exploded my shot/game. Now it’s happening in hockey (again! At over 40!)

Absolutely, there is a time and place for it. I'm glad you're liking it, we are having the same results with our 2.0 players. Glad you are enjoying it 👍

As for the saucer pass, don't dismiss it that easily; while it comes across as an easy pass, it actually requires substantial practice to perfect, especially at short distances. As opposed to a standard pass, the saucer pass starts off of the heel (as mentioned in the video), but requires steady hands to get the proper slice across the puck (and the subtle details here are also quite specific to the blade). I've seen adult players spending years to perfect this technique, and it's definitely something that's very friendly to some fun competition in the back yard in the summer. As such, you can often identity a technical player by their ability to properly sauce the puck.

Hi, love your videos just subscribed. Going to be trying a lot of these in my next season! Unrelated question for you. I’m actually a content creator as well and I want to start doing tutorials in the gym for training form (I’m a personal trainer). I’ve been having a lot of trouble with good audio when I’m not at my recording booth. What do you use? Sound quality on your videos is very good!
