True that Air Assault is harder than Airborne...more mental. Attention to detail, and you will have more written things to remeber that you get tested on..Sling loading for helicopter stuff. Be sure you are in good shape! He's totally right..you get plenty of time to study...I tested my class-mates which helped me too during that time...We had some wash-outs on the last day because you have to do 6 pull-ups on a bar with your ruck on at the end of the 12-mile road march...I'm not good with pull-ups..but banged them out from the adrenaline...

Good video bro, I’m the guard too E4 88m and have 290 PT score so they are sending me to Air Assault aug 2021 to Maine. I’m trying to train for it fully. Working to a 12 mile 3hr ruck. I usually never comment on videos. However I just want to thank you for this information. I recently got my Air Assault Wings 6/2021 and everything you recommended and spoke about was still in the course and fairly up to date. imo opinion the 2 things that dropped most people was Sling Load ops hands on test (its not a typical Army gentlemen test, if you don't pay attention you WILL fail), and the Obstacle course (practice if at all possible before you arrive: there are certain techniques you can learn by practicing prior that will set you up for success). And finally those who prepped for the obstacle course made it. It was also an implied task that everyone has done a 12 mile ruck for time and made the window prior to the school. Thank you again for the heads up. Air Assault!

Got my wings in 1987 from Campbell. First, much tougher to get your Air Assault wings than your airborne wings. Second, I'm 5'8" and that top rung on the ladder still gives me nightmares. I physically had to jump to catch the top to pull myself over. in 30 plus years you'll always remember your air assault experience. Good job summarizing it by the way.

2/17 Cav...I went through it at Campbell in '89. We had one guy dropped for not going over it and watched one fall from probably thirty feet. He left by ambulance but was ok. That was the word anyway. He never did return to our class. If he ever completed the course sometime later, I do not know. 1990 was the year; having thought more about it. @NemeanIndustries
@NemeanIndustries 4 года назад
I don’t blame you man, it got pretty scary at the top. I actually jumped and grabbed the top rung with my finger tips and didn’t feel a good grip so I had to let go and land back down with my feet, hoping I wouldn’t fall before trying to jump for a better grip again. Glad I didn’t have to do that obstacle again.lol
@fadelmuthana
@fadelmuthana 4 года назад
Cole Gillespie totally agree, and the crazy part is that I do not know what I could do to over come it now. I often ask myself, should I retry it and see my way, and then I think of the accident I had and ask will I survive another hit. It’s totally discouraging that the army isn’t taking safety steps to address it. Like seriously, I know we are in the military and there are risks but this is not a confidence tower, it’s a show off tower.
@NemeanIndustries
@NemeanIndustries 4 года назад
Fadel IIASoothingLifeII I think just the simple fact that you even ask yourself if you could do it shows that you could. If you were to outright say “no, I can’t overcome that fear” then obviously you can’t. But if the question even exists as to IF you could... then you can. Growth happens when you voluntarily face something you don’t want to face and overcome it. The best way to develop yourself as a person is to subject yourself to situations like that over and over again. Sure, you might not always be successful, but I think if you can fail and come back to try again, it’s just a reflection of your own individual character.
@fadelmuthana
@fadelmuthana 4 года назад
Cole Gillespie indeed thank you. I often think of that also. The military was my first experience to things I thought I could never do. The same tower that I fell from I did at bct. It was hard but I made it. You know, for me it’s more about how I can guarantee that I will not fell and face death than about fear itself. I have not made a lot of success in my spiritual life, so I often think if I faced death, then how will I face the afterlife. I admire your accomplishments and I want to get there. I’m honestly trying, and whether I fall or win isn’t into question because I want to think of trying for the least. Again, thank you for the reply and your thoughts are definitely encouraging.

@@NemeanIndustries you touched on this in your video. Is this in reference to the "confidence climb"? I looked up the video of it. You said you are 5'11 and had to jump to reach and pull yourself up? Heh...There's a little more to know about 'hooking up the wrong way'....Hooking up 'the right way' allows you to brake properly...hooking up the 'wrong way' (wrapping your line around the carabiner the oppsite direction) leads to a situation where the lline (rope) will automatically remove itself from your carabiner...In other words you fall hard because the rope is gone.

Congratulations! I would like to know if you know what is the minimum pt score to be considered for air assault and airborne schools? Thanks
@NemeanIndustries
@NemeanIndustries 4 года назад
Technically both schools only require a minimum passing score of 180. However, getting an opportunity to go to either school really depends on whether or not you can get your unit to send you. In which case, it’s competitive. Units don’t want to send guys unless they are likely to pass, so you’ll have to prove yourself by getting much higher than the bare minimum on a PT test, but also be able to ruck well, run 5 miles in good time, and be a competent soldier. Good luck!

I went through Air Assault School at the end of summer of 1993. I just watched an episode on the Army U tube channel. Things have changed a lot. We did our 2 mile run in boots for zero day, and we did the 12 mile in full battle uniform and gear. It looks like Air Assault School has changed a lot.
@magellanstravels
@magellanstravels 3 года назад
Ruben Martinez you will never go to combat in running shoes unless your base gets hit, and you are chilling in your soft shoes. The boots are much softer with arch support compared to the recruit boots of the 90’s. You should train as you fight, and you should train with top level gear. If you want a kinder gentler service I recommend the coast guard, navy, and air force

Very unit dependent. I’m in the only Airborne Infantry unit in my state. As an infantry unit with a specialty, we have access to way more schools than any conventional unit I’ve ever seen (including active duty units). Literally 80% of my Company has AT LEAST 2 skill badges if not 3 or 4. With all that being said, it wasn’t hard for my unit to send me at all. But my unit is the exception in the Guard, not the rule.

I can’t recommend my unit enough though if you’re thinking about transferring. Since we’re mostly old LRS guys, we still maintain a bit of that small unit mindset and haven’t completely gone to the big Army conventional way of thinking so it’s still fun and we mitigate as much stupidity as we can.

@NemeanIndustries
@NemeanIndustries 4 года назад
I know it’s not a great answer, but to a degree you have to know the whole book. The written tests cover everything in the book but aren’t really that hard. Sling loads are the hardest part of the course, so I spent a lot of time memorizing those. There is a graph in the book with all the sling load and sling set configurations. Study that, because it’ll be really important when doing your sling load test and you’re reading the LAW (Load, Aircraft, Weight paperwork before each sling load test).

No Day 0 equipment inspection?

Ah 18:31 you answered it. A little different than when I went through at Ft. Campbell back in ~2000. Since I was stationed there, if you were missing things on the Day 0 inspection, you were gone. If your shit was slightly dirty or lacking black paint etc, you were dropped. That kind of nonsense doesn't make sense for somebody to travel to a course just to get dropped on Day 0. Glad they changed it.

I had a buddy get dropped on day 0 for “unserviceable” PT shoes because they had a hole in them. But that was what he wore every day in the 82nd. That was back in 2015 I think so they must’ve changed it recently.

Check this out: now I’m an 11 year E-5 with 4 skill badges on my chest and 2 deployments. Things slow down a bit in the national guard, especially if you deny promotion to stay in a unit you love.

I did 4 years active at Bragg with one deployment in 2014, then went Guard into a LRS unit before we re-org’d into an airborne infantry line company. Every senior guy in the unit was here in the LRS and all of them turned down promotion for years to stay here. So everyone here has tons of schools and a lot of time in by the time you get your 5 and 6. I don’t care about promotions until I’m half way through my career. Just trying to enjoy myself right now.
