I've never seen a better presentation on this particularly challenging exercise. I'd stopped doing it because I was afraid of shoulder impingement. Now, I'm lifting much lighter with better form, more confidence, and better results. Thank you so much!
@TanlKula
@TanlKula 6 лет назад
If done incorrectly it's really easy to fuck up your shoulders with this exercise. Start off with baby weights. Don't ever try to go heavier before mastering the form. You'll regret it if you don't. Good lifts yall

Tanl Kula Correct, go fucking light, train on 4kg if needs be at first, learn how it's meant to feel.

marxxmann, that is a very good point, though even when leaning forward, some are still prone to impingement and rotator cuff injury. He did say something like how high to raise the arms depends on the individual and some can't do anything about it. His explanation that the limit of range of arm movement is due to posture is partly correct but anatomically, it has something to do with the greater tuberosity of the humerus hitting the coracoacromial arch (CAA) above it; some have more prominent greater tuberosity so their limitation is greater -- nothing they can do about that. The greater tuberosity is where most of the rotator cuff muscles are attached to the arm. If a person does the exercise repeatedly with poor body mechanics, i.e. raising their arms too high that the greater tuberosity repeatedly hits the CAA, particularly the acromion process, then that person will eventually develop bursitis, impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tear. One suggestion is to check your arm's abduction limit by slowly raising your arm laterally with your shoulder depressed and your arm in neutral position, not externally rotated. This is different from full shoulder abduction ROM which involves external rotation of the humerus and rotation of the scapua. When you hit the resistance or if your scapula starts to rotate upward, your greater tuberosity hit the CAA. So, when you perform your lateral raise exercise, you should stop just before you hit the resistance or at about 5 to 7 degrees of your abduction limit. For a lot of people, this is less than 90 degrees which means their arms don't raise high enough to be parallel to the floor. Lastly, learn to exercise your supraspinatus muscle. Even though most active in the first 15 to 30 degrees of abduction, beyond that, it still functions to compresses the humeral head against the glenoid fossa which allows the arm to roll under the CAA preventing the impingement to happen.

Id just like to say . I started my fitness journey last January the 16th . Lost almost 4 stone gained some muscle dropped from 38in to 34in with a belt ! . The goal was a 6pack by Xmas . I can't see that . But this channel was my turning point. And I'm 47 ! Thanks so much

Julian Morgan You can still have 6 or 8 pack by xmas. Just do a cut. Diet, cardio, ab ex. and hit high rep range. You could also let your level of testosteron test by a doctor and go on TRT. TRT would only do good at your age.

Keep going brother but remember abs are a "visual muscle" what I mean by that is everyone has abs even that guy with the keg belly. This doesn't mean don't work your abs, by all means work them and get them thicker. So when you lower your body fat percentage they're ready to been shown off proper. So my advice to you that's worked for me was dropping my caloric intake to 1500-2000 a day I also have a job where I'm constantly moving... if you have a desk job you might want to rest at 1500 intake.
