Thank you so much for providing us this information brother. I've been searching for the same information for 3 days which you gave me within 10 mins. Actually I long to build a home theater room in my basement for which I decided to buy Klipsch speakers. I already decided on the front pair, the center and the subwoofer (and guess what! they are the same which you have for your theater) But I was confused about this surround section, also because of the fact that I'm going with a 7.2.2 set-up. The later part of your video helped me get rid of that turmoil, Thanks again. I'll be in touch

I am using 4 RP-250S in my 7.2.2 setup, which includes a Denon X4300H, two RP-280s, an RP-450c, 2 up-firing dolby atmos speakers, and two R12s subs. Initially I was using older Klipsch Synergy S-10 surround speakers in the same setup, and after putting out the big bucks for the RP-250s, I was a bit underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, I am a true long time Klipsch user, and the RP-250s (using one set as surrounds, one set as rear surrounds) just didn't sound significantly "better", or at least in my mind thinking they were supposed to somehow wow me after spending $1,500.00 on them. Thanks for the video. I can't use your comment about using "different" surrounds at the rear, but it does have merit.

Currently working with Klipsch R-15M for Front Left/Right, with R-25C center channel. Considering the RP-240S for surround, room is a tad small, but like you said, just buy it and listen for myself. Thanks for the advice!

I must add that your videos have been really helpful in deciding. my current setup include Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-504C (Center) , Klipsch RP-8000F (Front Left Right) , Klipsch R-115SW (Sub), Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-502S (surround), Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-502S (surround Back), Klipsch RP-500SA Reference Premiere Dolby Atmos (front) all these hooked on to a Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3080. SVS Prime Elevation & Klipsch SA 500 or R-41-SA speakers work great hanging from your front & back walls as near as you can get to the ceiling. Align them with your front left and right speakers, then throw a couple of surround speakers at the +/- 10-20° either direction at the side and about 2 feet above your listening area. If you have an 11 channel system add a couple more surrounds or heights midway, Done!

Brief but VERY good video explaining the basics of different surround speakers and how each work . There is no "perfect solution" . In my opinion , each has it's own pros and cons when used and set up in a traditional set-up (room acoustics and size for both music and movies are big variables) . I do believe that creative location of surround speakers is crucial in maximising your systems potential . i wish i took pics and video of my setups through the years with average stuff that sounded fantastic

Klipsch Sixes optical'd into my LG 55". I'm considering switching to the Sony a80j or a90j & hoping it will utilize the screen speakers as the center channel &/or sync well 🤞🏼 I was using a Yamaha 5.1 system. I'm certain I lose control & quality, but not having to adjust stuff all the time is my new thing. And the Sixes sound amazing. Between LG's poor color gradiancy or accuracy out of the box, combined with always adjusting EQ's on my Yamaha, I've become adjustment exhausted. This is why my plan is a new Sony OLED with the Sixes. I have the Yamaha sub linked to the Sixes, but know I need to match a Klipsch 12" to them eventually. Great video, thank you for all this info 🔥

When I upgraded from a 5.1 to a 7.2.4 system I replaced my bipole side speakers with monopoles. MUCH better for Dolby Atmos systems! My sound system consists of 4 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains and 2 for the side channels), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 6 SVS Prime Elevation speakers (4 ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 mounted on the back wall for the rear channels) and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. The system is powered by a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A 11 channel AVR connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner.

RP-500M (sides) and & R-51M at the rear. Just need to get 4 x R-41SA for the height channels. Sub will probably be the SPL-150. Nice to hear your take on using bipoles as surrounds vs monopoles. I knew that they would be great for regular 5.1/7.1, but I was unsure about using them for object based audio like Atmos. I thought that the diffused sound of a bipole might interfere with hearing an object's precise location in the sound mix and kinda ruin the experience, but I haven't even heard Atmos or DTS:X yet, so I can't really speak on how I _think_ it'll effect the sound. Right now I have a 7.1 setup using BIC America FH6-LCR for the front and Logitech Z-5500 satellites (monopole)as the 4 surrounds. Lots of "hotspotting" on the sides, but sound very compelling in the rear. The front sounds great of course.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 7 лет назад
+acelakid94 I think the bipole as surrounds really adds to the Atmos/DTS:X experience. Your height channels should be direct radiating monopoles. They need to be precise like the surround back. Think of it this way, the bipole surrounds will make a wide, diffused atmosphere of the current scene. Then the other speakers will be precisely moving objects around. So you're engulfed in the sound. I'm not sure if I was making that clear in the video. Maybe I should start writing scripts! Hahaha! Anyway, thanks for watching, and for the comment!!

@hddanman7263

Techno Dad i could be wrong but i think with atmos everything is object based so having bi pole for surrounds still wouldn't be ideal i dont think they just add more information they change the way sounds move threw the speakers i dont think it would sound bad but from what I've read it just seem like it's directional based i think if u have bi pole witch i have also it seems like u have to compromise on weather your atmos movies sound best or regular blu ray hd formats. anyway my 2cents im sure will learn more in the coming years about what is best should be fun. sorry for any hiccup typing i dont really internet talk much. really like the channel tho.
@TechnoDad

Great point! I just popped in Mad Max and Gravity, I know those Atmos scenes very well. I can tell you that I don't notice any irregularities with the bipoles. However, this could be due to the close proximity of the speakers. The listening area is flanked by the bipoles. I can see what they are saying though. I would imagine it depends on your room and listening area. Here's a video of the RP150Ms so you can see how close the speakers are, and why I have a huge "hotspotting" issue. The RP250Ss are now sitting where the 150Ms are sitting in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eZ8WskUmpNg.htmlm49s

Good info, thanks. What type would you choose for a surround with corner or near corner placement (couch close to rear and left wall) ? I know this is never ideal, but my left surround (5.1 setup) has to go into or very close to the back left corner of my room, because of two sliding glass doors behind and to the left of my couch. Can something like the Klipsch RP-502S be placed near or even hung into a corner or would it still be better to mount it on the left wall one foot from the rear wall / corner? I would appreciate your opinion, thanks.

Great demo. Never thought of putting the bipole speakers on the side. I have polk audio 7.1 set up and plan on upgrading to 7.1.4. For my front mains I have RT55, center is CS350 LS and my sides are RM30 and my rears are RT25. I do have a pair of dipole and bipole speakers FX500i. I had those mounted as my rears. After watching your video I might give the FX500i a try and put them on the side. Going to get two more RT55 for the rears and two more RT25 for my heights for Atmos and DTS X.

Definitely my number 1 youtuber now!Hey I just have one question, from what I understand the bipole speakers diffuse sound to both sides of the listener correct? So does that not make it hard to distinguish whether the sound is coming from your left or your right? For example a car moving from the left of the screen to the right, wont bipole speakers make it difficult to tell the direction? Also some people say that for atmos you should avoid using speakers with wide dispersion, they say it's because atmos pin points sounds to a particular direction or something like that. Apparently atmos itself fills in the gap between speakers thus making a dome of sound all around. Any info on that? Thanks

@TechnoDad 7 лет назад
Nice setup! Yeah, the way things are going, I might step into power amps, and then just upgrade to a pre/pro. The way things are looking as far as HDMI 2.0B and the way technology moves so fast, I think my AVR will be obsolete in like 2 - 3 years. Projector and screen are really pricey right now, especially the 4K projectors. Not sure if you are going with a 4K projector, but if you are, the Oppo UDP-203 has got a great feature for projectors where they strip the HDR metadata but keep the REC 2020 color. Cool stuff, be sure to look into that if you're looking at a 4K projector.

I presently use old Klipsch KSB 3.1 front ported book shelf speakers 8" woofer and older narrow aluminum rectangle tweeter for rear surrounds elevated about 9' about 8 foot from the seating area focused down towards the listening area in alignment as per left and right of my front L&R. The seating area is dead center from front and rears. I am considering experimenting with dedicated SS speakers to see if they would improve the SS experience and they would have to be located the same. Thoughts?

I use mono all the way around. I think it's the most ideal setup as long as your surrounds are an equal distance away from the main listener. And use the 2 foot rule of slightly elevating them. That is probably why you felt it was localized.

I'm set up 5.1 right now, my room is 16x16. my book shelf speakers are in each corner facing me when I'm sitting down. if I were to change to bipole speakers do I mount them on the wall off to the side of me a few feet from the corners or right in the corners (one of the drivers probably bounce right off the wall) and take my book shelf speakers off to the sides of the room to create a 7.1 instead of selling them as they are Wharfedale diamond 220's and I love them ? what type of power I should be looking to get or that doesn't really matter? I hope I was clear enough for you to picture this in your mind. PS wrote this before you talked about using the rears as rear surround what I worried about is my sitting position is against the wall so having bipoles and monopoles all again the same wall will not sound very good as my ears are technically at the same area as the speakers so all that rear sound will be in front of me. Maybe put bipoles in the rear and put my monopoles on the wall in front were my towers are and using them as front extra presence ( my yamaha allows this.) SOOOOO many options it's ridiculous

Hi Tecno Dad! I'm using a Dipole for my surround right now in a 5.1 set up. I'm planning to upgrade my set up to 5.1.4. and use Bipole surround. My room size is 20x20 with a 9ft. ceiling. Currently I have my Energy Audissey a5+2 Bipolar speakers as my L/R. I'm planning to get a Definitive technology SR 9080 bipolar surround and Definitve tech in ceiling speakers to have a tonal match. Please advise which one to get bipole or monopole. Btw I'm learning a lot from your RU-vid videos.Thank you in advance!

I know this video is old but I've been looking at getting bipole speakers for a while now but I want to keep my monopole Wharfledale 220's. Since you have probably tested many things since this video was made how should I set it up? have the Bi's in the rear and move the mono's off to the side or do the opposite? I just want to point out that I'm sitting up against the wall so I can't put speakers directly behind me. I'm not sure what speakers to get either have been looking at the Fluance signature speakers they are priced very well but I still would like to see other options. Beside Klypsh do you have any other recommendations looking for under 600$ a pair since they are only surround speakers and I don't need 1500$ speakers to help fill in the surround. My budget took a hit after getting a new SVS pb-3000. hope you see this

That's the theory, Atmos is object based so you want all monopoles. If you're not going for Atmos, it's trickier and you have to decide based on your room which way you're going.
@mfkhometheater7742

I know this video is a few years old but it's still very good. My sides will be full CBT arrays and probably dipole but not in the conventional sense of surround dipoles. The nulls will be parallel to the sidewalls and the (+) energy side will be directed into the room so it will behave more like a monopole but with more uniform polar response. There will be three, one of each row of seating. I will probably open up the wall so that the (-) energy side of the dipole is dumped into the attic space surrounding the theater. The Atmos and rears are yet to be determined. I have some ideas for the Atmos, I'm thinking full CBT arrays, small, maybe twelve 3" Dayton Reference drivers firing straight down from the ceiling. I will probably need a couple 6 or 8" drivers to handle 80 Hz to perhaps 300 ~ 400. That's not a definite plan, just something I'm considering. The rears are a bit of a problem. The 3rd row of seating isn't going to be more than a few inches off the back wall so it's not going to be easy to come up with a good solution. Of course for the middle and front row it's not a problem but for anyone sitting in the back, the rear surrounds may be more like overheads than rears. Not sure what I can really do about that. There is an entrance to the theater on each side of the room with steps coming up the raised floor. I could put something back in that area but that doesn't really do the back row any good. It might however open up more options for speaker designs that would work better for the front and center row.

Techno dad. I'm ditching my soundbar and finally going to atmos beginners setup 5.1.2. Main store I go for tech is Best Buy. I can't do in-ceiling speakers. Getting two towers then thinking of getting 2 klipsch R-14S for rear surround then ur link got me interested on 2 svs prime elevation for heights on side walls. Are the r-14s decent or what will u recommend? Also what you recommend for the towers to match this potential setup?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 7 лет назад
Hi Sergio! Very cool you decided to ditch the soundbar! I have a full Klipsch setup, so I would steer you in that direction. If you decide to go with Klipsch or not, you'll want both your towers and center channel to match so that you will have a seamless sound stage up front. You could go (2) R-26F, (1) R-25C, (2) R-14S and (1) R-10SW. Klipsch sells that setup directly for $1,365. BUT, If you want to go the Klipsch route, email me and I'll connect you with my dealer. technodad55@gmail.com He can get some insane pricing!! Like the RP-250S in this video, I got over $100 off each one. You should talk to him and see what he can get you before you buy anything from Best Buy. You might even be able to get better towers or center channel because of his discount. As for the SVS Prime Elevation, I'm really think about getting those as they can handle more wattage than the RP-140SAs I currently have. Also their wall mounting solution looks superb! I think maybe another month for me, and I'll jump on the SVS Elevations. I too have a 5.1.2 Atmos setup, and for me in the current living space is the max I can run. I may try the SVS Elevation with my RP-140SAs to try and get 5.1.4, but I'm not sure how that will sound, and I have to run a shit ton more cable...and I hate that!!!

Do you think Dipole will create worse experience than bipole? I just get a 5.1 set with Dipole sorround speakers but its drivers are firing to the back and to the front not at 45 degree angle. I moved my cable almost to 90 degree left and right from my couch and put the bottom of speaker around 150cm from the floor. Hope it will work for me the room is 410 x 360cm on the 410 cm wide wall i plan to put projector screen. The sofa is 260cm width and is almost central as there is door in left back corner so 2 people sit perfectly in middle of the back wall but the 2 people on right side of sofa will be almost near the right wall. I wonder when the null area is where is my sofa why the document i found about the dipole says it should be mounted 90 degree to the ear of listener so directly on left and right side of the listener? The dipoles in my case will be 60cm from back wall and around 290 cm from front wall. The speakers are teufel theater 500 5.1

If you can't move the sofa out at least a bit, (also subwoofers can boom at the back wall, so it's a good idea), I'd say forget the rears and just focus on the 5.1 system and put the surrounds perpendicular to your seats.

+Adnan Khan Hi! I would go the 250S for any surround you have. Also, you should have matching subs. The reason to go dual sub is to even out the bass response throughout the room. There is a natural dip in bass response with one sub. When they are miss matched, you're not getting natural evening out, you get two dips in different locations. Maybe dual 12s so wifey will be less pissed? If you are in the states and want the name and number of my Klipsch dealer, email me: technodad55@gmail.com
