i just wanted to say that you are such an amazing youtuber. you are concise, you focus on candles and not your ego, and your energy is on point. such a helpful channel and i am so grateful for you. thank you.
AAAHHH IM FINALLY A BIT EARLY! thank you so much, Erica! I'm bout to launch my candle business soon here in the Philippines but I'm still trying to make everything as perfect as I can. So far, in my journey, you've helped me most.
I'm brand new at candle making and I started out at the maximum of 10% for the waxes I am using. I first started with Joy Wax from Nature's Garden. I recently have been using IGI 6006 and reduced the fragrance oil % to 8 - 8.5% in an effort to increase the hot throw. BTW I love your channel and have learned so much from you!
@@SexyChoclateThunder I don't think I lost anything by reducing the fragrance oil amount to 8%. I think both of my moves (both reducing the amount of fragrance oil, and also switching to 6006) DID increase my hot throw. 6006 has a little more paraffin than the Joy Wax and from listening to a few great candle making channels, including this one, I learned that might help. Like Erica mentioned in this video, fragrance oil is expensive and reducing it decreases the cost.
Thank you so much! I'm just getting started and your knowledge has been a Godsend! You've probably saved me so much time, money and frustration! I used 464 at about 10% and I used Coffehouse FO. They're curing right now but the cold throw is GREAT! I love that scent! Thank you!
Hi Erika. I use 464 GW at 9% but sme fragrances are strong and i use 8-8.5% for salted caramel. i have tried another wax but i feel that after years of using 464 i have finally came to a stage that i understand how to use it well. i was using coconut soy and love it a long time ago but in Australia it cn be hard to get it some times.
I’m still learning as I just started my candle making journey, but I use a 464 soy wax and I’m finding 8% usually has a good hot throw and holds my FO well. I always use Jeff Standley’s FO calculator to figure out how much FO oil I need to add by ounces.
I use a soy/coconut/beeswax blend from Aztec. I heat to around 175 degrees Fahrenheit, add FO around 145 degrees Fahrenheit, and pour at 130 degrees Fahrenheit. My fragrance load varies from 7-10%. My best HT and CT candle is the patchouli amber FO from Aztec. My fragrance load was 9.7% in the first batch.
I use 6006 wax! I typically heat my wax to around 195-200 (because I use a presto pot and so when it comes out it cools down pretty fast! Sometimes to fast! Lol!) So typically 195-200 but I don’t add FO till 175. I don’t know if it’s because my apartment tends to run colder or what but I have never been able to get a good hot or cold throw when I added at 185. I’ve tried it with so many oils and not sure why but with my wax for some reason it just never seems to work! Again that might just be because I’m hot natured and so I keep my apartment fairly cool! 😂 And I typically use 10% but there are a few exceptions where the candles are just over powering at 10% and I’ll typically use 8% then! But I generally love really strong candles but sometimes it’s a bit to much ever for me! 😂
It’s so interesting how everyone has different formulas that work for them personally! Also I had no idea you used 6006! That’s still a wax that I have always wanted to try!! ☺️
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Yes!! I love it! It’s an amazing wax! I had some issues figuring it out in the beginning but once I got it down I’ve never had issues with it! It’s a great wax to work with! 🙌🙌 I actually just ordered a 5lb slab of the Coconut Apricot wax from wooden wick though that I’m super excited to try out! If I use it would probably be for a more luxury line though! I got that and a few of their sample fragrances! I’ve been back and forth cause theirs are pretty expensive! 😅 Lol! But I’ll try them out and see! If I use them it would again probably have to be for a more luxury line though! 🙌🙌🖤
I use 10% with my 464, due to my climate and certain FOs, I find 10% works consistently so far, though some like fruity pebbles will work on a 6-8% bases just fine!
I use CCS # 12 with a small % of TW 30, I use between an 8 to 10% fragrance load ❣️ I heat to about 185 add FO pour at about 150 in clear jars for better adhesion and 170 in my Matte black & white jars & tins always good tops and both CT & HT have been really good ❣️
As always, great info! Thanks so much for always helping!! I started testing again with a different wax than I use for my family business and decide to blend it with some coconut oil...just to see what it does. I also am testing it with a 14% of fragrance oil vs the 11% I use use for our business. I'm at a phase where I just wanna play a bit:D Thanks again!
I’m using IGI 6006 at 10% but I reduce to 8% ... I’m still learning along the the way, I also add my FO at 180-190.... planning on opening my candle business this fall🤞🏽❤️ I’m just trying to decide on which two jars sizes to start with
There’s no wrong or wrong size! I would suggest purchasing each size and testing them to see which ones you like working with the most ❤️ (or the ones that are ‘easiest’ to wick) 😅
Might be a stupid question, but if your wax states only 8-18% fragrance load and your actual fragrance oil label states max usage of 10%, do you go by the fragrance oil usage? So my max would be 10% then? Making sure my scent is strong but don't want to put in up to 18% if you're not supposed to.
I make beeswax candles and have found 7-10% works well. Some fragrances have a potent hot throw whilst others need a little more oil to achieve a good HT. I have even had 4-5% work with some pillar candles. Beeswax is always full of surprises!
I’m using Soy 10 because you recommended it and I figured I’d start with that but it’s going really well so I’m sticking with it. I heat up to 185°, add 10% FO, stir for about 30 seconds or whenever it looks like it’s mixed well then pour. I don’t usually pay attention to the temperature when I pour but whatever it is, it’s been working! Lol Thank you for all of your tips! They’re so helpful! ☺️
Great topic- right now I am using 444 sox wax. My FO load really depends on the scent or blend and how I want the overall experience to feel, I would say I go between 7-10%, and it might vary later on. I heard that this wax can go up to 11% but its never a good plan to " overload" your wax I think. Hope you are having a great week! #teamErica 🌈👏🙏😎🎈
This is a really good topic as an experienced candle maker been through dozens of different waxes and wicks... Fragrance and Temps can get confusing and tricky 😓!
I am new to candle making and wondering can essential oils be used rather than fragrance oil? I've heard some people mix different essential oils to create a certain scent. Anyone have experience with that? And how do figure out a ratio to use? Any insight would be appreciated:)
Hi! First I wanted to say that your videos have helped me soo much its unreal. Im wanting to start selling candles on Etsy and I was wondering if you had to register your business and get business insurance before you started selling
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Ditto here Erica. Your videos help me tremendously! To say this is an understatement. So, thanks for sharing quality information especially as a newbie.
Thank you for this video.i thought the flashpoint was the temp you cant add the oil above that temp.i was adding my oil at around 170 degrees.now i can add it at 180 185.i use 6006 wax.so far i like using this wax accept for the hole i get in the middle of the jar when the wax cools down.i hope pouring it at a higher temp will take care of that problem
I make small batches as my largest candle is only 8 ounces and I pour off the remainder in clamshell molds for tarts. 24 ounces of IGI 6006 with 6 ounces of IGI 4625. 6%-7% FO.
I'm still in the beginning stages and I've went from 3% to 8% to 10%... But I've used different FO form a variety of companies. Does the density of the oil make a difference in the % you use?
Lisa Owens- I too am using freedom wax (just starting testing with this wax and candles in general 😊) and I'm also using 8% FO. With that being said, what temp do you melt the wax to (not to clear on the correct temp 🤷♀️)? And what temp seems to work with adding the FO and pour? Thanks in advance!
@lisa owens I've been heating between 185° and 200° and adding FO at 160° 🙂 I just wanted to make sure I'm doing it correctly 😅 its been hard to find any real information on freedom soy or find people that use it. I'm not set on this wax but test just incase it is lol! Thank you again for your help!!
Erica, this was a very informative video! You did great and covered all the basics plus some extras. I like that you covered how you started with a larger percentage of fragrance oils, but discovered you could get the same fragrance quality smell when using a percentage or two lower and get the same result. It really does save you a bit of money! Especially useful with stronger fragrances. I do the same thing. There are a few scents I'd love to use and can't, because they just don't throw well and are weak. That really bites sometimes. Jill Gross
Thanks as always for your insights, Erica! I’m currently testing C6, C3 and 464. What are your thoughts on wicks? How have you seen them affect the HT @different FO%? 🙏🙏
Okay, a bit late to this video but still, I use sunflower wax :) It's not common in the US I think but here in France a lot of us are really focused on the environment impact so we use more an more rapeseed wax and a few of us turned to sunflower... It's actually a tricky wax (I used soy wax when I was doing candles as a hobby, and boy this one is different !) and I'm struggling to get a good hot throw but I'm still in the testing process :)
Erica, where can I find more informations about coconut wax? Do you know another candle marker that share informations of this wax, like you do? Thank you for this video!
I joined a Facebook group called “for the ❤️ of coconut wax” and the group admin Teri gives wonderful knowledge on candle making and working with coconut wax! ☺️
I have done testings for my wax melts and when we heat them up in a diffuser that requires a flame underneat (a tealight), it really DOES burn the FO, cause it brings the wax to about 220 degrees.. Will it still be ok in candles?! Since the flame is literally going to be IN my wax? I'm just wondering, I made some candles last night and plan on testing them next week.. Just want to know if its a waste of time lol..
I use soy wax and I am doing 8-10% FO for candles. 8% for the oils which are dense like pure rose and 10% for mild and light smells like oceanic breeze. 12-15% For wax melts
I found out that I am using 100% natural soy wax and my candles do not have a smooth top along with dip on one side and cracks at the top of the candle. Do you recommend I should add beeswax to my soy wax candles and how much?
Hi 1st of all love your videos new to this and your videos have helped me so much THANK YOU. What is your opinion on adding fragrance to Sox wax at a lower temperatures have been adding at 85 degrees Celsius but watched a video saying to try 55 Celsius but this seems way to low what is best PLEASE HELP
The wax I use is Hemp Soy Wax (blend of soy, coconut and hemp oils) the recommended fragrance load is 9-10%. I am still confused about melt point and pouring temp. Can you help me with that?:) in the description of the wax is says 120F melt point and 150-160F pouring temperature. What’s the temperature I need to mix my fragrance with wax?
that means the wax will melt at 120ºF, but it recommends to pour the wax at 150-160ºF. I would still mix fragrance at 180-190ºF, then pour the mixture into the vessels at 150-160ºF. I hope that helps!
I don’t I just use fragrance oils, I’m not sure if it’s the same percent because I don’t work with them but I would assume it would be ? Not sure though ❤️
I use 416 golden brands soy wax and used 8%-10% and tried pouring at different temperatures and still no strong Hot throw :( but I am making sculpted candles so idk if that is why ? ANY suggestions guys?!
Just starting my business and I’ve started using soy wax. The supplier website doesn’t say the percentage of FO but is recommending 1 to 1 1/4 oz per 1 lb of wax. How do I figure out the percentage that way?
A lot of people use candlescience’s wick guide. However those are merely suggestions on where to start your testing :) www.candlescience.com/learning/wick-guide
@@allforbigocandleco.1324 They just sent me the wrong sample pack so I’m back on hold till the replacement is sent. Ugh. I’ve never heard of hpsp wicks...
I'm struggling with informing my future customers about constantly trimming the wicks after each burn. My friend says that people aren't going to do it, because they don't have to with other name brand candles, which is true. How do I get around this?
Technically everyone should be trimming wicks, even with well known name brand candles. The truth is most people are just used to candles with large flames, soot, black smoke on the jars, etc and don’t think a thing about it. I remember looking at some of my old candle jars from name brand companies and they were BEAT up. Most people just don’t know that they need to be doing it. However if you inform everyone about it (I include a candle care card with every order as well as the warning label at the bottom) then at least you are trying to get the knowledge out there and doing your part as a business owner. One day it will be common knowledge to trim wicks on candles.... hopefully 😅
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Thank you for responding. I have candle care cards and I also plan to make vids about trimming on my IG page. Btw, your videos are amazing and super helpful!
The wax that I use right now is Cbl 125 (Parasoy Blend) that is max fragance load is 8%. I use 1oz of fo per pound of wax (like 6%) but I want to test increasing the fo to 7 or 8 % to see if there's a difference.
What type of wax you are using? And how long are you allowing your candles to cure? I tried 464 soy wax and the recommended amount 1oz per pound which is like 6% and on the directions said to lite after 24hours but on the wax it stated to cure for 2 weeks. So I’m testing 24 hours the cold throw is amazing but the hot throw not so much. I’ll let you know how the 1 and 2 week candles do.
@@Mzdiaz2u I was using pillar of bliss from natures garden in wax melts. Ive order soy wax from a different supplier and waiting for it to get here. I'm a newbie lol but I realized I need more fragrance oil. I'm learning to play around with my percentages.
@@mayalippert2046 6% works nice , If you add to much fo it can start looking like cottage cheese and sweats. It doesn't hold that much fo. But ITs HOT THROW 🔥
@@Elmar_22e I love it so far. I heat to 185 and add F.O and stir for 2 minutes. I try to pour at 160 but I have let it go to 150 before pouring and it's worked out. I poured one at 138 and it had a lumpy top so there is definitely minimum temperature for pouring. I ALWAYS get a small sink in the middle and then use a heat gun. I am new to this soy wax game so I have only tested a couple and the rest I made are still curing. I do believe in curing 2 weeks for getting best HT in soy candles. I have tried both CD and eco wicks and it truly depends on the F.O.
