Should you pinch back zinnias?
Zinnias and cosmos are especially generous bloomers if pinched. Pinch early to promote branching, then “pinch” by cutting flowers. ... You can stagger bloom times with some late-flowering plants like Russian sage, phlox and asters by pinching back half of the plants in your flower bed by about one third
Where do you pinch zinnias?
The secret to getting the longest stems from your zinnias is pinching them when they are young. Here's how it's done: When plants are between 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30.5 cm) tall, take sharp pruners and snip the top 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm) off the plant, just above a set of leaves.
How many times can you pinch zinnias?
When they do so the plants sprout new stems, grow stockier, and have more flowers than they would otherwise. When your zinnias are six inches tall, pinch off the growing tip with a thumbnail. The plant will produce two stems at that site. Each stem can be pinched again when they're six inches long.
What can I do with leggy zinnias?
Renew leggy annuals and perennials by cutting back about half of the stems 2/3rds of the way to the base now. When those stems grow back and begin to bloom in about two weeks, cut back the remaining stems the same way

This is the best zinnia pinching video. Excellent demonstration with dates too! I'm growing zinnias for the first time, Magellan actually. They're already designed to be bushy but I think pinching will help give them more flowers.

Love your videos! Been silent watcher for over a year. Last year I grew zinnias and cosmos first time ever. Pinched them back like you do here. I will ALWYS be doing that moving forward. I had a few that I left without cutting back, and they just get too leggy and needed support. Plus you don't get as many flowers. Curing these plants back when small is a no brainer!

This is my first year growing zinnias and I was hesitant at first to pinch the tops of them, but they have been growing side shoots so I’m a believer 😄 It’s definitely beneficial for thicker, stronger, stems because I get a lot of heavy winds in my area. Thank you!

That is so cool! I love to plant Zinnias n cut them for bouquets. My concern is you didn’t mention if you just stuck them in the dirt ( your trays) or if you used root compound to start the rooting also I see yours our inside with lights. I live in Florida on the west coast about a hour from Tampa. I would love to try this. Maybe I’ll try it in the fall since I’ll probably need the lights. Would like to know what you fertilize them with. Thank you so much in shat this great information. ♥️😊👍 Shelly

Hi Shelly , I did not use rooting hormone they did just fine rooting in water.. Yes lights until they can go outside with warmer nights.. I fertilize just with what I have here some times weak solution of miracle gro and sometimes fish emulsion.. nothing fancy I imagine there is better stuff to use but I get buy until I plant outdoors.. hope that helps and good luck..🌼🪷💐

I live in Minnesota/zone 4 and want to getting the timing right before outdoor planting in late May…early June. Thanks for any information.

You can but I have always watered from the top and careful, the soil I use is pretty forgiving and soil-less so less disease issues..

Hello. I’m so happy I found you. I have a question. I directly planted into the ground snd my seeds germinated and are growing great but I can tell I didn’t space my seeds enough. I basically just threw seeds into the ground and ran my hands over the seeds to spread. I have patches that look like their are 20 seedlings in a bunch. How do I thin them out? Do I wait until they grow bigger or do I do it now? I can find tons of videos on thinning before they are in the ground but none that have them already in ground. I also just threw wildflower mixes in different areas and the same issue. They are all bunched into clusters. Any suggestions?
@dianemummvideos
@dianemummvideos 3 года назад
You can try and carefully dig up a few and separate , it will definitely shock them. if it was me I would find a few small containers and transplant them in for a bit , place in no sun for a few days then gradually add more lighting to adjust slowly .. from there let them grow and then move back out in the garden .. you can also try do this directly in the ground but will have to try and shade them until they root back in.. good luck..
@jamiegreiff1170
@jamiegreiff1170 3 года назад
@@dianemummvideos Thank you so much for responding. I will give this a try. Can I ask why no sun for a few days? And should I water them as well, or just make sure the soil they are transplanted in is really wet?
